Honors even as T&T SSFL All Stars & Jamaica All Stars draw.

An extremely disappointing crowd of less than one hundred people turned out to the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium to witness an exciting draw between an all star SSFL Trinidad and Tobago team and an the all star team from Jamaica. The second leg of this “good will” series takes place at QRC Grounds on Monday from 3:30 p.m.
Interestingly enough the Jamaica All Star Schools team included some of their National U-20 players who lost to T&T 1-0 two days earlier, but still advanced to the next round of World Championship qualifiers on a 2-1 aggregate score. T&T on the other hand chose not to include their National players in order to give the non national school players a chance to show their wares.
The Jamaicans would feel that they should have come out of the first leg with more than a draw as they dominated large portions of the match, but found T&T custodian Glenroy Samuel in outstanding form.
The game started with the Jamaicans looking the livelier of the two teams, and they sounded an early warning with less than two minutes gone when Jamaican striker Tremaine Stewart fired wide from an acute angle on the left.
It took ten minutes before T&T mounted a serious threat when skipper Elijah Manners hit a well timed volley from on top of the goal area wide of the mark.
Jamaica should have score moments after when a right sided cross was split by goalkeeper Samuel and fell to the feet of onrushing Jamaican player who hit his follow up shot wide of the post.
The constant Jamaican pressure paid dividends in the 30th minute when a sweet one-two was played at the top of the T&T goal area which left James Thomas in a one on one situation with Glenroy Samuel. Samuel dove bravely at the feet of Thomas and pushed the ball onto the feet of Jamaican skipper Dwayne Smith. Again Samuel dove at the feet of Smith and got his hands to the ball, but somehow could not hold on and Smith calmly lobbed the ball over the stranded keeper and the head of T&T defender Dwayne James to give the Jamaicans a deserved lead.
The Jamaicans continued to look the more aggressive team and looked to consolidate their lead only to be caught out against the run of play in the 43rd minute. T&T skipper Elijah Manners collect the ball some 20 yards out and sized up to try a shot. Manners’ wayward shot turned out to be the perfect pass for San Juan teammate Anthony Guppy, who collect the ball on the left and slotted home the equalizer to the delight of the 50 odd T&T supporters.
Both teams went into the interval with a goal a piece.
The second half was more of the same. The Jamaicans pressed for the go ahead goal, but time and time again custodian Glenroy Samuel was equal to the task. When Jamaica did beat Samuel, the ball crashed against the upright and was eventually cleared out. T&T did produce a spell of pressure coming down to the end, and looked more dangerous with the introduction of Ricardo Peltier and Nigel Wright.
T&T nearly stole victory in the final 7 minutes when Elijah Manners floated a teasing cross from the left, over goalkeeper Kelso Cousins who came out to collect, only for a far post header by Dwayne James to just miss the near post.
A last ditched attack on goal by Jamaica resulted in a long ranged shot which was again well held by man of the match Glenroy Samuel.
The final whistle came not long after, leaving the two teams with all to play for in the second leg on Monday.
Jamaican Head Coach Dr. Dean Weatherly was particularly somber after the game. “We should have come out of this game with a win. The boys played well, especially skipper Dwayne Smith and the last stopper. We will have to do some work on our finishing in a light session tomorrow.”
T&T Coach Leon Carpette was a bit more circumspect in his post match analysis. “Under the circumstances of not playing together very much, the boys did well. Glenroy had a good game in spite of the first goal. For the second game I will give some of the other lads who did not get playing time a chance.”
When asked about the decision to not include the National players like the Jamaican team who fielded six, Carpette had this response, “If there was some better communication between the National staff and us, we would have included players like Elton John whom I think is a quality player. If we knew that he would have been on the bench and not played with the National team, we may have decided to include him. In any case this is an opportunity for the other guys in the league to show their stuff.”
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
