St Vincent National player and CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh newly signed striker Shandel Samuel has injured his right knee and would be out of action for 4-6 months missing more than half of the 2007 Pro League season.
According to Jabloteh’s Physiotherapist Ashton Mills the striker ruptured the tendon in a very innocuous manner during a training session with the ‘San Juan Kings’ on Thursday.
The team Physiotherapist confirmed Shandel underwent surgery on the same day of the incident at the St Clair Medical Hospital.
Speaking to ‘ttproleague.com’ Mills said, “He already underwent surgery to repair his tendon in his right knee yesterday. It is clear that he would be out of the game for the next 4-6 months. The muscle ruptured is responsible for the extension of the leg and he is currently wearing a cast from his knee down.”
Mills now believes the player would be out of the hospital by tomorrow considering an MRI to be done today (Friday), “Shandel is to have a MRI done today at the National MRI Centre, Mucurapo. After the MRI the doctors would then determine whether or not the surgery was done well. If so, he is expected to be out of the hospital by tomorrow,” explained Mills.
Samuel a former North East Stars player has only been training with the 2006 Courts Pro Bowl and Lucozade Sport Big Six Champions from the beginning of March after signing with the team in February.
Coach Terry Fenwick of San Juan Jabloteh expressed disappointment in Shandel’s misfortune but believes his team will recover from the loss.
He told ‘ttproleague.com’, “We’re actually devastated by Shandel’s disaster. I see this as terrible luck for the player. It is a big loss for us, but we have to accept this and move on, it’s the way of football. We just need to recover as a team and continue to prepare for the season,” he said.
“As for Shandel, he would be well taken care of during this time,” ended a disappointed Terry Fenwick.
Shandel Samuel last played in the Pro League last October before he was sacked by his former employers North East Stars under Coach Everald ‘Gally’ Cummings for misconduct, but he was involved in competitive action during the Digicel Caribbean Cup with St Vincent in January.
