Beville spanks Connection - Stars hold Public.

Beville spanks Connection.

Beville Joseph hates to see happy Vibe CT 105 W. Connection football players. United Petrotrin coach Brian Williams has no idea what gets Joseph so fired up at the sight of Connection's green shirts but he had no qualms about exploiting his passion.
On Saturday evening, Joseph was inspired again and it meant a welcome three points for Petrotrin as they edged Connection 2-1 at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva.
If striker Andre Alexis felt mystified at being omitted from the Petrotrin line-up for an attacker who is yet to score this season, he must have done a double take when Joseph opened his account with one of the goals of the season.
His 47th minute strike, which turned out to be the match winner, brought Williams to his feet and shaking his fists as Petrotrin defied their southern neighbours in a tense, keenly contested affair.
"It was a great goal," said Williams, a former Trinidad and Tobago international stand out. "I know he always plays well against Connection. So I always try to give him a chance against them."
Connection coach Stuart Charles-Fevrier was gracious in defeat as he credited the tactical discipline and work rate of the Petrotrin team.
Saturday's loss was the fifth defeat for Connection this season and saw the "Savonetta Boys" fall four points behind Defence Force.
"We haven't given up on the league by any means," said Fevrier. "We still think anything is possible."
Fevrier's defiance was not matched by his players though.
Petrotrin were shaped in a 3-5-2 system designed to smother the Connection midfield and play on the break. Williams asked his players to mark man-to-man in their own half while strikers Joseph and Sylvester Teesdale were asked to harass the Connection full backs at every opportunity.
"The plan was to work hard and not give Connection any space to play," said Williams. "Technically, they have better players than us but we knew that, once we stay in the game, we will have opportunities."
Connection began in lively fashion and were first on the scoresheet after their early pressure won a penalty. Defender Husani Thomas handled in his own 18-yard box and veteran Earl Jean stroked home the spot kick to put Connection ahead in the 35th minute. But the lead evaporated in seconds.
Connection's young Brazilian defender, Douglas Da Costa, was lucky not to be sent off after barging over the goal-bound Teesdale in the 17th minute but his compatriot and the club goalkeeper, Joao Mansano, made an even costlier error-eight minutes before the break.
The lanky Mansano looked uncertain when tested with crosses and his indecision was punished as Petrotrin midfielder Simeon Augustus beat him with a looping header to equalise after a Marlon Lewis delivery.
Petrotrin almost went ahead, two minutes later, when Joseph's powerful shot on the turn beat the custodian but was cleared off the goal line by his namesake and Connection defender, Elijah Joseph.
But only divine intervention could have denied Joseph his 47th minute winner as he sent a screaming strike past Mansano and in off the underside of the bar.
Williams was on his feet now as belief flooded through the Petrotrin squad.
Defender Devon Drayton, on loan to Petrotrin from Connection, marked striker Jonathan Frias so closely that he almost had to be scraped off his back when Fevrier finally replaced the talented young Dominican Republic player.
Petrotrin midfielder Keon Daniel's long limbs swayed and twisted enough to make him look double-jointed as he frustrated the opposing squad with his mazy runs.
Most impressive though was Petrotrin captain Romauld Aguilera who managed the commendable double feat of nullifying Connection playmaker Gefferson Goulart while also keeping possession for the Palo Seco squad.
There might not be a more complete player in the Pro League. Strong, composed and assertive, Aguilera looks unruffled on the ball while he is a crafty reader of the game in attack and defence-a modern day Reynold Carrington.
Silvio Spann caught the eye with his remarkable free kick for Trinidad and Tobago at the 2007 CONCACAF Gold Cup but, arguably, Aguilera was the best "Soca Warrior" and surely deserves to add to his paltry six international caps whatever the outcome of talks between Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (T&TFF) special advisor Jack Warner and the 16 blacklisted World Cup players.
Aguilera might help protect a result but he is rarely a match winner. So credit Williams for unearthing one for Saturday's fixture.
Joseph spent most of this season competing in the reserve league-Petrotrin are on top in that competition-where he has 10 goals.
But Williams remembered his impressive past outings against Connection including a hattrick in a 3-1 win, two years ago, that helped Petrotrin cop the Big Six title and led Williams to the 2005 Pro League "Coach of the Year" award.
"We do have some good players but our problem continues to be inconsistency," said Williams. "So sometimes it is about selecting the right player at the right time."
Joseph, often ignored this year, justified Williams' faith on Saturday as Petrotrin, seventh at the time of writing, kept a Big Six spot within reach.

Stars hold Public.
By: Lasana Liburd (Express).

Bmobile Joe Public's stuttering 2007 Pro League form continued yesterday afternoon as they were held goalless by North East Stars at the Sangre Grande Recreation Ground, Sangre Grande.
Gary Glasgow and Seon Power came close to opening the score summary for the defending champions while Stars substitute Shervin Charles forced a fine save from Public custodian Alejandro Figueroa as both teams threatened briefly in the closing minutes.
There was little else for a sizeable crowd to get excited about as the professional players struggled for fluidity on the muddy pitch.
Public players wore armbands as a mark of respect for playmaker Kerry Baptiste whose brother, Terrance, was murdered in midweek. Baptiste missed yesterday's fixture through suspension.
The moment of silence lasted much longer than expected though as neither outfit offered much in the way of entertainment.
The stalemate might trouble Public coach Michael McComie more than it would his Stars counterpart James McLean. The result snapped a two game losing streak but Public have slipped into fifth spot-one place below Defence Force-while McComie has managed just five points from a possible 18 since his return to the coaching helm.
Stars remain in seventh spot although they trail United Petrotrin only by goal difference. They have lost just once in Sangre Grande this season-a 1-0 defeat to Superstar Rangers on May 6-and, apart from the final ten minutes, they rarely looked like being stretched yesterday.

Joe Public: - Alejandro Figueroa, Lyndon Diaz, Carey Harris, Jason Springer, Seon Power, Keyeno Thomas, Dale Saunders (capt) (Devon Caseman), Lyndon Andrews, Reon Nelson (Gary Glasgow), Kayode Mc Kinnon, Nigel Pierre (Kendell Davis).

North East Stars: - Curtis Granger, Errol Charles, Glenton Wolfe (capt), John Stewart, Marlon Stoute, Sherwayne Morris (Shervin Charles), Keryn Navarro, Keston Pierre, Kendall Velox, Kendall Jagdeosingh (Desta Francis), Randolph Jerome (Carlon Hughes).

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

This is why we need Lasana to write PFL reports often, because he writes them in such a way you get to anxious to read what will happy next in the story. The rest of the writers on the Pro League site only have one style, a great headline and a poor story.

Maybe Skeene shold hire Lasana to write Pro League reports, but then again, maybe not !!! as we will not be able to post it freely here. So lets leave things the way they are.....  ;)

One thing I would like from Lasana is for his reports to be a little more "game in-depth" (like what happended in the 18 minute etc, spot-lights something nah) that along with what he have here will be more than tops.

Petrotrin midfielder Keon Daniel's long limbs swayed and twisted enough to make him look double-jointed as he frustrated the opposing squad with his mazy runs.

Keon Daniel is ah boss !!!!!!
