Ames take a hit!!!
« on: August 15, 2007, 08:43:03 AM »
Last night I happened to catch a sports show from Toronto: "The Fan" One topic was the omission of Stephen Ames from the President's cup- a golf tournament which pits an international golf team against an American team led by Tiger Woods.

The commentators were discussing with Stephen Ames his possible reasons for being not named as the CANADIAN representative considering the fact that in the recently concluded PGA he made the final cut ahead of Mike Weir. Mike Wier was  knocked in round 11 and was not even close.

One announcer asked Stephen how he felt and if he felt slighted. Another question they posed was if his involvement with  sponsoring a golf tournament in his native Trinidad and Tobago had an impact on the selector;s decision. Is to hear Ames backpedaling and trying to be politically savvy. The kicker of the question  they asked the man was this: DOES THIS OMISSION MAKES YOU FEEL LESS OF A CANADIAN THAN MIKE WIER?

Ah wonder if Stephen Ames was born in Canada if they would be posing such a question? Ah this tell people that no matter how long yuh live in this country, rarely would you get the acknowledgment that you are a 'true blue Canadian'  Sometimes you living in this country longer than some people who born here but yet one may find subtle and not so subtle forms of exclusion.

Well Mr. Ames, the next time you stand up and proclaming Canadian make sure you put ah little Trini in yuh talk!!!! I understand the reason now why some folks go through the denial of heritage; research and studies have cleared that up. For awhile in my work with Caribbean associations I could not understand this. I could not understand why some parents  would have their kids miss steel pan practice because the kids had a piano lesson!!!! Well Ames yuh get a shake up. Allyuh go see from this experience how Ames go be talking more about he TNT heritage. This was the event which  would ground him back to where he came from instead of walking around  saying yes I am.  a Canuck..... It happens.

Doh forget the famous question: Whey yuh from?

Whatever you do, do it to the purpose; do it thoroughly, not superficially. Go to the bottom of things. Any thing half done, or half known, is in my mind, neither done nor known at all. Nay, worse, for it often misleads.

Although disappointed he didn't make Presidents Cup, says fellow Canadian has more experience
By DEAN MCNULTY -- Sun Media

Stephen Ames spoke about being left off the Presidents Cup team on Monday. (CP/Aaron Harris)

STOUFFVILLE -- When Calgary's Stephen Ames ballooned Sunday to a 76 in the final round of the PGA Championship after a 68-69-69 start, he wasn't thinking about being overlooked by Gary Player as a captain's choice for next month's Presidents Cup at the Royal Montreal golf course.

It wasn't until Monday, when he was left off the Presidents Cup International team in favour of Mike Weir, that Ames wondered aloud how Player came to his decision.

In fact, he said he had been fairly optimistic that he would be picked, considering his world ranking had him ahead of Weir -- 36th to 46th -- and he is even further in front of the 2003 Masters champion in the 2007 Fedex Cup point standings -- 4,767 to 3,556.

"Stats show that Mike hasn't been playing his best golf," Ames said yesterday at a media gathering to launch the Canadian Junior Golf Association tournament between Canada and his native Trinidad-Tobago at the Granite Golf Club. "But (Weir) does have the experience of playing in three previous Presidents Cups, so I guess that is why he was chosen."

Ames was forceful, however, in his opinion that Weir still was a great player, but he was disappointed that he wouldn't be representing his adopted country.

"I knew that because it was being played in Canada that there would be at least one Canadian named to the team," he said. "I just would have loved to be that Canadian."

As for his meltdown at Southern Hills, Ames said it simply was a matter of him not doing what was needed to be done.

"I knew what rut I fell into," he said. "I was standing on the 16th tee and realized that I was doing things the way I was when my game was suffering. Once I figured that out I had a birdie and two pars to finish off the round."

Ames said that just by being in the final pairing in the season's final major tournament was a satisfying achievement. But he wishes he could have been more of a challenge to playing partner and winner Tiger Woods.

"I was happy for Tiger," he said. "My heart was there for him, getting the win after a pair of seconds (at the Masters and British Open)."

Maybe dey could see(or hear)right through the fake canadian accent;because that certainly wasn't a Trini accent he had when they interview him during the masters.

In life we have to make choices.....

When Stephen Ames was representing Trinidad & Tobago...the Corporate sponsors of our beloved Isle didnt piss on him.  Also its important to note that his TT passport is not worth much either...so he had to play in Europe and not making much of a pay check  for several years while he was in his prime execept for D Johnny Walker Classic.  (Stephen would have won so many many more titles and even the MASTERS by now if he was from a G-8 country)

After all his visa problems and eventually marrying a Canadian Flight Attendant ...he received his Canadian residency and now Citizenship...

I understand Stephen's plight and I agree with HIM 100%....

I think only when u are placed in his shoes as some of us are ...u can understand...Stephen LOVES T&T very much or else he wouldnt give back his time and effort to come back here to assist with was he has learnt...

I say SHAME on my FELLOW TRINIDADIANS who call him a traitor...D REAL TRAITOR is you....

Ah say it, how ah see it

With all due respect; no one eh call the man traitor; no one eh denying the man love for TNT; What happened to Ames is a classic reawakening experienced by many. Just when yuh think yuh belong, yuh does find an event like this to give yuh a dose of reality!!!!!

If is anything the incident points out that ethnic origin rather  than race or colour can still be a salient feature to block yuh progress.

Ames based on his performance deserves to be at that tournament more so than Weir!!!!!

Yeah, ah heard him on an interview during the PGA tourney. His accent sounded freshwater and phony. He was trying too hard to sound canadian. Every other word had that familiar trini singsong lilt to it.

Talking about accent.

I have lived abroad for 22 odd years. and after years of having to slow down and annunciate for foreigners, it would seem that I too have an accent.

Worse yet, living in Turkey now and no W Indians around, I am constantly havign conversations with a N. American vernacular. It does have an affect on one's accent.

Now put me with Trinis and the my Trini accent comes to the fore.

However, with foreigners, although I might sound foreign to a Trini - the foreigners can hear my Trini twang - and I eh fighting no kinda accent.

Some of us when living in a foreign environment, sometimes have our accents affected, it does not mean we are less Trini.

Also, we are crticising the Canadians for not treating him as a Canadian.

He plays for TT in the WC. He also sponsors a golf tournament in TT.

If you were a Canadian and your best player was doing this for a FOREIGN country, how would you feel?
Perhaps what goes around, comes around.

Peace,
VB

blah blah blah....

This thread is based on an assumption that Ames' non selection was due to him being born in T&T.

The article happens to explicitly state that Weir had more experience in the P.Cup....but I guess that's not a factor to consider huh?.... ???

Not only is the sentiment in this thread overly presumptuous, but is somewhat underhandedly (if not explicity- doh tell meh a lie) passing judgment on a situation in absolute ignorance (unless you are Ames' right hand man and know all of his motivations for becoming a Canadian citizen)

Add to that- Being Trini doesn't mean playing pan, talking with a certain sing song accent, loving calypso or eating doubles.....There are people in Trini (and abroad) doing all of the above and not contributing one damn thing to T&T society....but kill dem dead they more Trini than Stephen Ames

Big Steeeeeupsss !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jokey thread...
