Caledonia stutter in Sangre Grande.

It is almost four months since Economy North East Stars' last Pro League defeat at their Sangre Grande Recreational Ground headquarters. The Sangre Grande team's only home defeat came in their first game at the Recreational Ground this year, when Trinidad and Tobago playmaker Kerwin Jemmott struck late to give Superstar Rangers a 1-0 win on May 6.
The Stars have held defending champions Joe Public and CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh at home since as well, and also beat Police.
Yesterday was the turn of present leaders Neal & Massy Caledonia to leave the north east without the maximum three points at stake.
Caledonia fared better than most visitors on the uneven ground but ultimately failed to beat goalkeeper Curtis Granger as the teams settled for a goalless draw. Dodgy ground or not, Caledonia are yet to defeat Stars this season-it was their third successive draw-and, if the "Eastern Stallions" maintain their place atop the Pro League standings, it would be a notable consolation for Stars who are in seventh place at present from the ten team table.
It took a remarkable triple save from Granger to avoid defeat for the hosts, though, as he blocked from Caledonia talisman Marvin Oliver and then managed a double save from young utility player Radanfah Abu Bakr as Stars soaked up the pressure late in the second half.
Oliver twice went close otherwise, while Granger tipped a late Abu Bakr free kick over the bar as the home team held firm.
Caledonia might regret the chance to extend their lead over Jabloteh, who were held goalless by Vibe CT 105 W Connection on Saturday night in Marabella. The difference between first and second in the Pro League remains at one point.
But then, the Stallions should know the difficulties faced by visitors in Sangre Grande.
The uneven Recreational Ground surface makes it difficult for passing teams to move the ball around, while the Stars can unsettle technically superior outfits by a high press and close marking.
Sometimes, the game can tilt excessively towards the physical battles.
Caledonia midfield organiser, Stephen David, was an early casualty as a collision forced his early substitution and he received five stitches in his mouth at the nearby hospital.
An exuberant challenge by Stars striker Randolph Jerome on Caledonia goalkeeper and his Guyanese compatriot Richard Reynolds prompted a brief fracas between the sides in the second half.
When the dust settled though, the two teams were inseparable.
Stars now move within two points of Connection and United Petrotrin, who occupy the last two places for the Big Six competition, while Caledonia maintain their slender lead atop the Pro League standings.
