News:

20-Sept-2007 - Malabar Composite were officially ejected from the 2007 Secondary Schools Football League following a decision by the SSFL disciplinary committee. The Malabar team was scheduled to play the first match of a double header yesterday against St. Augustine Senior Comprehensive at the Larry Gomes Stadium.
The team received an official notice from the SSFL disciplinary committee stating that they were suspended for the remainder of the 2007 season. According to reports, Malabar allegedly fielded an unregistered player, ironically against the very same St. Augustine team in 2006.
An official from Malabar stated that a meeting with the SSFL disciplinary committee was carded for December 8th 2006, but never happened. A subsequent meeting was rescheduled for June 1st 2007, and again this never materialized. The Malabar team received fixtures for the 2007 season in which they were listed amongst the competing teams.
Yet another disciplinary committee meeting was scheduled for September 4th, 2007 a mere three days before the school league started. It was at this meeting that Malabar was informed that they would continue to be a part of the 2007 league but suffer an automatic nine point deduction, which they appealed. At the appeal, new evidence was produced, and the disciplinary committee voted that Malabar be suspended for the rest of the season. The Malabar team was not privy to this new evidence. In response, Malabar has issued a legal letter to the SSFL.

QRC could be a thorn in their sides.

Express writers Kern De Freitas and Roger Seepersad take a look at this year's Secondary Schools Football League...

NORTH ZONE:

The race is on, and I don't expect a clear leader for the North Zone too early this year. Queen's Royal College, Malick Secondary Comprehensive and St Anthony's College have all opened their accounts in formidable fashion.
QRC, despite some strong resistance, have outdone Trinity College at Moka, and shown that, led by national Under-15 striker Jerrel Britto and a few other experienced players in their line-up, could prove to be a thorn in the side of the other fancied teams in this year's Secondary Schools Football League.
Defending champs Mucurapo are looking to take their fourth successive North Zone title, but stumbled in their opener, losing to St Anthony's College. Manager Jimmy Arthur will be hoping his charges can fill the gap of the players who have left.
"After winning the North Zone for three years straight, we definitely want to continue on that path, and hopefully we can go on to even better things this year," Arthur told Sport Express.
Malick pulled off an upset over 2005 InterCol champs and 2006 runners-up Fatima College, and will have other contenders thinking twice before they dismiss the Morvant-based side too quickly. Malick have a group of experience from 2006 inter-mingled with new incoming players, which coach Sterling Figaro feels can go all the way.
"The odds were against us," Figaro told Sport Express on Monday, "but this year, Malick is out to set standards. "We have beaten Fatima, but that is history. As the coach, the strategy is to take each game at a time."
St Anthony's "Tigers" are without some of their presumed starters who have recently taken up scholarships abroad, but still have a nucleus of players from last year, including National Under-23 goalkeeper Kevin Mussio, to aim for national honours.
They also have nifty forward Qian Grovesnor and defender Uriah Bentick as skipper, and if they can improve on their season opener, could be one of the teams to watch this year.
Fatima College have suffered an early setback, but still have some players they can count on from last year. They have proved that they do get better with time, so they cannot be discounted from making an impact this season.
With national Under-17 players just from the World Under-17 football Championships, such as striker Stephen Knox, midfielder Brenton Balbosa, reserve midfielder Chad De Freitas and skipper, stout defender Sheldon Bateau, Fatima have a good chance of rebounding from their first defeat of the season.
While Trinity College do not have a bunch of stars in their midst, they showed some promise in their opening encounter against QRC, which suggests they won't quite be walk-overs this season. Time will tell, though, whether they have can stand up to the more-fancied teams in what is expected to be a competitive North Zone.
"Diego Sec" have again made the trip to the Championship flight of the SSFL, but few would have expected a year ago that that would be at the expense of St Mary's College.
But Physical Education teacher Edmund Holder believes his team can make an impact this year.
"We have a more or less close to the same side as last year, so we have some experience players... we're hoping to be very competitive this year.

EAST ZONE:

Toco Composite are sure to be the surprise of the SSFL East Zone for the 2007/8 season, sounding a loud warning in their opening game, holding title-holders and favourites to repeat St Augustine Secondary Comprehensive to a tame 2-2 draw.
The "Green Machine" will indeed have their back against the wall as San Juan Secondary Comprehensive are also in the process of mounting a strong bid for the title, building a squad around a solid defence that includes last year's goalie Glenroy Samuels and newcomer Jamal Spencer who was in training with the National Under-17 team.
Put that together with the venomous boot of striker Kareem Girod and it may very well equal a formula that will rock the football hierarchy in the East.
'Gustine will not however go quietly into the night, retaining the services of Daniel Joseph, who played with the National Under-17s and Mark Alibey who was sidelined by injury last season. Emmanuel Alexander and Joel Johnson will add some additional experience to the squad.
But experience is not all that St Augustine have. A remarkable find for the "Green Machine" is youngster Brandon Rupert, who will have a lot on his shoulders as they try to repel the onslaught of Arima Senior Comprehensive, who have shown great improvement from last season. The other teams will also be in the hunt for top honours in the East as all the squads have proved they are evenly matched as they will be seeking to build as the season goes along.

CENTRAL ZONE:

Carapichaima grabbed the Central Zone InterCol title from the grasp of Presentation College Chaguanas last year, and are looking for more this season. So much so, that manager Steve Gopeesingh is looking at the bigger picture this time around.
"I'm looking beyond Central right now because I am pretty certain of being successful at the Central (Zone)," says a confident Gopeesingh. Carapichaima had a favourable training stint, notching victories in training matches in Tobago.
Tabaquite Composite are another team adopting a wait-and-see approach. Although not pleased with the amount of training they had before the League began last week, manager Elton Santana is looking for his players to hold their own still.
"I don't think we are as prepared as we should be. We have lost quite a few players as well," Santana explained.
"Not until we get into it we will know how we are shaping up," Santana said. "I guess we will be able to hold up onto our own. Not until we get into it, we will know what is happening."
Marabella is the only Junior Secondary in the mix, and had a fair season last year. They have been training for about six weeks, and are hoping their preparations will be an advantage to them this time around.
They have some young players, who are "willing and raring to go", according to teacher Jefferson Jervis, as they try and better last year's showing. "I think this is our year," Jefferson says.
Chaguanas are hoping to mould a team around a core of players from last year, with some of the younger players entering the school. Among those players are defender Kadeem Smith, striker Rafael Brathwaite, and midfielders Kevon Guy and Jemeel St Clair.
"This year we had a bit more training," says manager Rudolph Bernard, "so I suspect that we played about two or three practice games, and they didn't look too bad. so I think it will be a little better. I would like to win, but hopefully we will be there or thereabouts."
Few know what to expect from newcomers Waterloo High School this year, and most will be targeting them for big margins of victory this year. But teacher at the school Ramnaresh Samuel will beg to differ.
"We are trying to do our best, and we are telling the students to do their best. We are trying to see if we can win a few games, cause a few upsets. We have been training since May. Moving up to the Championship, we need to get them in the habit of playing serious games."

SOUTH ZONE:

The South Zone of the SSFL has not been a true focal point in many parts of the country, often overlooked in many instances but that is sure to change this season as some new faces come on board.
Anthony Rougier and Dexter Cyrus, both former national players will offer their assistance to St Benedict's College in their bid for zonal dominance. With such experience going into the zone, there is sure to be some surprises from our neighbours in the South.
Survivors from last year's campaign for St Benedict's includes Enkosi Simon, Troy Moses and Mikhail Daniel, but the player to make the biggest impact on fans and the coaching staff has been young Shaquiel Stewart who played for the National Under-15 team and made a debut at the championship level in St Benedict's win at the weekend.
It will indeed be a "tough season ahead" in the South with Presentation College San Fernando Moruga Composite, Princes Town Secondary Comprehensive, Naparima College, Fyzabad Composite and Vessigny all with a fair chance of winning the zone.

TOBAGO ZONE:

So far, very little is known about what Tobago will offer for 2007. The customary "Big Guns" of the Sister Isle, Scarborough Secondary, and Signal Hill Senior Comprehensive, are both expected to be leading contenders for Tobago's top honours.
Last year, those honours were divided among the two, but they failed to have similar impact in national competition.
This year, the two schools should once again be at the forefront of the five-team Zone. Also in the competition are Roxborough Composite, Mason Hall Secondary, and Bishop's High School, but traditionally none of the three have threatened to create an upset thus far. Still, by the end of the first round of the Tobago Zone, it should be clear which teams are likely to make their mark on the competition this year.

What so 'dotish' about the format...yuh rather them include the month so that it reads 09/07/2007 etc. for each fixture?  Grouping by month and then showing the individual date is the simplest and most sound option since it avoids redundancy.  There is nothing wrong with the current format.

Many teams apparently lost most of their key members and player from last year.  I know Mucurapo  lost all except two of their starters from last year.  Anybody has the stats for the other big guns from last year?

Wham Peong? all that hate over a date format ? Like something vex yuh...I could see his point. there is some redundancy being omitted in the sense that for Sept eg there's no "9" written all the way down the list of games..... but the "simplest & most sound option" probably woulda been to group the games by day. eg

9/10/2007 (or 10/9/2007 for the anti- Americans)

x vs y
g vs h
d vs u

9/13/2007

p vs t
f vs g

and so on and so on...that would eliminate all date redundancy-

but does it really matter?

P. town flying.  Is we own to lose now.  South zone looks like it has a lot of parity.  Vessigny is always a difficult team, Siparia is holding its own for a promoted team, Pres is decent...What happen to Benedicts? Ah thought Cyrus and Rougier were supposed to be coaching the team?
