Caledonia AIA maintained their two-point lead at the top of the T&T Pro League table, after a hard fought 2-1 win over third placed Defence Force at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Malabar, yesterday.
The “Stallions” as Caledonia are called went into the match brimming with confidence having eked out a 1-0 win over United Petrotrin on Tuesday in a re-scheduled match.
Having enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, Stephen David then put Caledonia ahead in the 24th minute.
Nine minutes before the interval, Walter Moore doubled the lead for the “Stallions” when he collected a short feed from Marvin Oliver to beat goalkeeper Kevin Graham.
Despite the two-goal deficit, Defence Force battled away in search of a goal to narrow the gap and on the stroke of half-time Devon Jorsling converted a penalty to get his team back into the match and set up an interesting second half.
On the resumption, Defence Force took the match to the “Stallions” who were equalled to the task defensively to deny their opponents.
Caledonia also created a few chances of their own, but goalkeeper Graham was on spot on each occasion to keep his team in the contest.
But in the end Caledonia was able to hold onto the narrow win to secure three valuable points to push their tally to 48 points from 23 matches, two more than CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh.
At the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo, Jabloteh got a 76th minute strike from Antiguan Peter Byers, his league leading 15th of the season, to beat United Petrotrin 1-0.
In the two other matches played yesterday, both Hughton Hector and Ronaldo Viana scored two goals for W Connection in a 7-0 bashing of Police at the Ato Boldon Stadium, Couva while Kerry Baptiste and Jamaican Roen Nelson also scored two goals each in defending champions, Joe Public 5-1 whipping of Tobago United at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet. Today, Economy North East Stars will entertain Superstar Rangers at Sangre Grande Recreation Ground, from 4pm.
