Keon Daniel hurts Army for First Citizens Cup semifinal spot.

When the final whistle was blown, the distraught dip of the head by Coach Kerry Jamerson was much visible as his team Defence Force were knocked out of the First Citizens Cup quarterfinal match 2-1 against United Petrotrin thanks to an opening goal by Trinidad and Tobago international Keon Daniel who later assisted the second item.
The ‘Oilmen’ would now move on to the semifinals of the knockout tournament on Friday 28th September coming up against San Juan Jabloteh. United Petrotrin boasting their usual coaching staff of head coach Brian Williams and assistant coaches Philbert Jones and Floyd Lawrence showed early signs of as victory at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium which hosted two quarterfinal match-ups on Friday night.
Sylvester Teesdale was the first to have a go at goal when he met a neat flick-on by teammate Beville Joseph from the centre circle but the small built forward fired over bar failing to put much pressure on Defence Force goalie Selwyn George in the 8th minute.
Five minutes later Teesdale worked his way through a shaky ‘Army’ defence but only to let off an ill attempt making it easy for goalkeeper George to gather.
On the other end Ronald Boyce forced the Petrotrin number one Tristan Charles to tip his effort wide as the match intensified.
‘Army’ ace forward Richard Roy also was close to putting the team ahead but disappointingly saw his well worked effort ripple the side netting.
United Petrotrin then took lead when playmaker Keon Daniel took it on his own to dribble his way from the middle of the park past the entire ‘Army’ defence to slot low past goalkeeper George for a 1-0 advantage in the 27th minute.
Daniel looked to his double when he stepped up to a free kick some 24 yards out but the lanky midfielder’s attempt was too high to double his tally.
Defence Force had two late first half attempts to pull back a goal but a 42nd strike by Ronald Boyce from inside the area was cancelled out by a diving Tristan Charles.
Charles had it easier for the second after Devon Jorsling turned his marker Romauld Aguillera easily above the penalty area only to roll a shot into the arms of the Petrotrin goalie.
Early into the second period Defence Force was close to equalizing but again denied by Tristan Charles who gathered Ronald Boyce’s header from a Jerwin Balthazar chip.
‘Army’ continued to dominate on the goalscoring opportunities but just failed miserably on converting their chances.
Skipper Anton Pierre had a 55th minute free kick flash just outside the upright while three minutes later Jorsling saw his deflected effort flash wide for a corner.
The Soldiers had a couple other chances through Boyce and Jorsling which wasn’t converted.
But soon the Kerry Jamerson coached side was made to pay dearly when Petrotrin doubled their advantage.
Less than ten minutes on to the field substitute Jerrol Forbes netted Petrotrin’s second item after latching on to Keon Daniel’s through ball to powerfully blast past goalkeeper George in the 76th minute for a 2-0 cushion.
Jorsling failed to pull one back for the Tetron based team when he whipped Jerwin Balthazar crossball just wide of goalkeeper Charles upright.
With just a few minutes remaining Defence Force goalie Selywn George had to be on the alert of conceding more goals, which Petrotrin failed.
In the 86th minute wingback Kennedy Hinkson stretched a low effort wide of the ‘Army’ goalposts from inside the area and shortly after goal scorer Jerrol Forbes was denied by a one handed save by goalkeeper George.
Defence Force got a consolation item in the final minute of regulation time through Jorsling who headed past goalkeeper Tristan Charles in a flash of a moment but that wasn’t enough as referee Gregory Hospidales sounded his final whistle.

Connection moves closer to First Citizens title.
...while Public stumbles out.

What a thriller it ended at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium on Friday night as W Connection moved on step closer to defending their First Citizens Cup title. W Connection would now clash with current League leaders Caledonia AIA on Friday 28 at the same venue for the semifinals of the tournament.
But the defending champions didn’t have it easy getting past defending League Champions Joe Public in the second match of the quarterfinals at the south venue.
The match had to boil down to penalties which the ‘Savonnetta Boys’ surfaced winners on the night with a 4-2 win from the spot and kicking off the goals was recently acquired midfielder Aurtis Whitley.
W Connection’s Jose Luiz Seabra missed the second but goals by Ronaldo Viana, Christian Viveros and Earl Jean secured a solid stand while Joe Public’s Kerry Baptiste missed his team’s first kick, and goals by Seon Power and Lyndon Andrews wasn’t enough to put up resistance when Kendall Jagdeosingh failed to hit the back as the boys from south celebrated their 4-2 win with obsession.
However Connection would have deemed they had the match in hand from the very beginning when in the 11th minute forward Dwight Scott had a clear cut chance turned away by goalkeeper Alejandro Figueroa.
With the immense pressure and high paced performance by both teams no one could have predicted a stalemate result at the end of regulation time.
Joe Public’s Roen Nelson had a neat attempt which curled over bar after a very promising build-up.
W Connection had a decent go at goal to the end of first half through wingback Jose Luiz De Sousa from a 25 yard freekick which was thwarted by goalkeeper Figueroa.
Dwight Scott had the last say of the half after dribbling two defenders and released a low shot which was equaled by Figueroa as both teams had to settle goalless at the half despite their energetic first period.
Changes were soon made into the second by W Connection when coach Stuart Charles Fevrier opted for a boost in offence replacing Gefferson Goulart with Aurtis Whitley and forward Dwight Scott with Earl Jean.
Within less than a minute on the pitch Whitley had a shot on target cleared off the line by defender Keyeno Thomas who flung everything in the way after his goalkeeper Figueroa was left in no man’s land.
Shortly before the half hour mark Joe Public’s Kerry Baptiste wasted a wonderful opportunity failing the beat goalkeeper Marvin Phillip after hardworking Gregory Richardson made one of his telling runs from behind the centre-line to play him one on one with the W Connection goalie.
Phillip had to be alert soon afterwards to punch a long distance effort by Arnold Dwarika which immediately turned the action to the other end of the field with a foul at the edge of the Public area, an on target free kick by Jose Luiz Seabra which was tipped behind for a corner as the ‘Eastern Lions’ were caught caged for a moment.
W Connection continued to slightly dominate the number of attacks but were unable to break the deadlock.
Public had their positive moments up front as well, even getting centre back Keyeno Thomas to manage a shot but that too wasn’t able to break the stalemate.
The last grasp for a match winner came from Public’s wingback Seon Power who was denied by the brilliance of goalkeeper Phillip on the 90th minute mark after a powerful low ball beat the entire Connection backline to meet the defender at far post. There were no changes in the goalless score at the final whistle as referee Lee Davis pointed to the penalty spot in accordance to the competition rules.
