« on: August 24, 2005, 08:08:04 AM »
what kinda thing these fu*^ing people does write in de papers man
they need to use some other type of wording to do their fu*^ing article
Check this.

The guardian editorial lower section say " Jack Warner's advances to Latapy came after Sober discussions with the country's most celebrated player and current captain Dwight York"

What allyuh tink about that statement? Pure shitty in my book.

davey, i think the writer was using sober in another context, ie calm, clear headed.  I dont think he was saying warner is a drunkard

Partner u need to read a dictionary. Words have MORE than one meaning. I don't like journalists but I think this one is justified.

sober
Pronunciation: 'sO-b&r
Function: adjective
Inflected Form(s): so·ber·er  /-b&r-&r/; so·ber·est  /-b(&-)r&st/
Etymology: Middle English sobre, from Middle French, from Latin sobrius; akin to Latin ebrius drunk
1 a : sparing in the use of food and drink : ABSTEMIOUS b : not addicted to intoxicating drink c : not drunk
2 : marked by sedate or gravely or earnestly thoughtful character or demeanor
3 : UNHURRIED, CALM
4 : marked by temperance, moderation, or seriousness
5 : subdued in tone or color
Nothing pisses me off more than racism, and ppl who you know that act like they don't know you.

Tallman I have repeatedly asked for a Common Entrance Exam before being allowed to join and post on this forum.
Initially I thought it should consist of football questions that would rate one's football knowledge, if a passing score was not achieved membership would be denied.  I can call for this test now as I am already a memeber and would be exempt form taking the test (whew!!!)
I see now that an English Comprehension section of the exam will need to be added.

Oh gosh hahaha.......Funny enough DavyJenny actually raises a good point. Sober in the context more than likely didn't mean "not under the influence of alcohol", but why was the word "sober" of all words used here ?

Are conversations between Dwight and Jack usually not "sober" (regardless of definition) ? Is a conversation of that nature between Dwight and Jack expected to not be "sober" ? Did the fact that it was a "sober" conversation make a difference ? Who knows ? It may have been a typo- intended to write somber.

Yeah I know I'm probably taking this a little too far but given both Jack's and Dwight's reputation for hitting the bottle, and therefore possibly speaking/acting irrationally and without composure ......the fact that the word "sober" was used when it could easily have been ommitted makes me wonder if the editor was trying to say something.....

DavyJenny, you may have taken the word out of context a bit, but yuh raised a good point meh boy. The wording is questionable. I with yuh on this one.

Funny string of posts though.....love it....

Â  Yeah boy Davy and Jenny that real funny yes! But for true maybe the editor was playing a pun on the word sober using both meanings. That would make sense, however when it comes to Latas playing for T&T which is something very very serious whether good or bad, Mr. Warner had to be seriously sober. I wonder if he was drunk with respect to the amount of begging and bribing to get Latas back though hmmm. Maybe he was not sober when he pull out he cheque book and beg Latas but later become serious when Latas said yes? BTW I wonder how much beg and bribe he really dish out for Latas return boy?
