Macoya based Joe Public lifted the coveted FA Trophy title on Wednesday night on their home turf at the Marvin Lee Stadium after edging fellow Pro League club Caledonia AIA 1-0 with Jamaican striker Roen Nelson netting the lone item. The ‘Eastern Lions’ winning their second piece of silverware this season have also pursed the winner’s cheque of $60,000 after the keenly contested final.
Caledonia AIA after doing everything else right except score had to settle for the runners up take-home of $25,000.
After applying the early pressure Caledonia’s Marvin Oliver executed the first good attempt on goal in the 8th minute after a poor clearance by Keyeno Thomas fell to his feet some 25 yards out—he slashed it just wide of the far upright.
In the 12th minute Kerry Baptiste headed onto the crossbar from inside the area in what should have been the opening item after meeting Kerry Noray’s cross. Noray himself had an earlier opportunity which was blocked by goalkeeper Andrew Durant.
Three minutes later from a free hick by Walter Moore, Conrad Smith headed just over Jacomeno Barrett’s crossbar.
Kerry Baptiste had another opportunity in the 18th minute, but the midfielder slashed his effort high overbar after meeting Devon Leacock’s leftsided cross.
Joe public’s Jamaican striker Roen Nelson broke the deadlock in the 20th minute when he headed past goalkeeper Andrew Durant—who failed to advance on a well taken Lyndon Andrews’ corner—for a 1-0 advantage.
Roen Nelson had the ball in the back of the net a second time by the 28th minute after meeting another Andrews’ pass but it was ruled offside by the referee’s assistant.
Caledonia’s Abdullah Phillips won a free kick at the edge of the area for the ‘Stallions’ in the 33rd minute but Conrad Smith was only able to crash his effort into the wall.
One minute later Phillip had a great chance from inside the area after a great build-up by the ‘Stallions’ but a timely challenge by Dale Saunders was enough to throw his effort off target.
Phillips’ miserable night continued when he miscued with goalkeeper Barrett at his mercy after a right sided cross by Sheldon Emmanuel found him unmarked above the six yard area in the 38th minute.
The halftime whistle came and all Caledonia had for their efforts were a couple of missed opportunities and corners while Joe Public enjoyed their 1-0 advantage.
The second period saw Caledonia AIA enjoy all the possession but nothing to show for it, except a wide attempt by Conrad Smith in the 58th minute.
The ‘Stallions’ had a deadball opportunity in the 69th minute after Seon Power brought down Hayden Tinto just outside the area. The task was handed to midfielder Marvin Oliver and he hit over bar.
In the 80th minute Joe Public’s goalie Jacomeno Barrett pulled off a magnificent save to gather a deflected Sheldon Emmanuel cross on a Caledonia AIA counter attack. Sheldon Emmanuel was replaced soon afterwards by Radanfah Abu Bakr.
One minute after the Jacomeno save, Conrad Smith missed the far post by a fraction as Caledonia struggled to find the back of the net as they tried everything with Joe Public on the defensive.
Joe Public’s second half substitute Gregory Richardson did a couple of crossovers to make room for himself before trying to slip one past goalkeeper Durant in goal for Caledonia, but the Guyanese player was very alert to gather in the final moments. Fans were off their seats as the three minutes of added on time proved the fiercest.
At the final whistle, the ‘Lions’ led by their coach Michael Mc Comie celebrated in an ecstatic manner as all predicted. Mc Comie a winner of the national title as a player and now as coach. While a disheartened Caledonia suffered their second final defeat of the 2007 season after their First Citizens Cup final loss to W Connection.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
