Exclusive Interview with Francisco Maturana.
« on: February 25, 2008, 04:55:54 PM »
Exclusive Interview with Francisco Maturana.
Interview Conducted By: Inshan "Flex" Mohammed.
[/size]

Francisco Maturana: "Flex - The enclosed questionnaire I have tried to be exact, I do not want any bad interpretations, therefore I have been careful in my answers, that independently express how I am and feel. I beg you to have them well translated".

English Version.

Start:[/b]

Flex-1: No doubt you are a big name coach. Your coaching experience took you from Colombia to Saudi Arabia, Spain, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina etc. What really made you decide to accept a job with such a small country like Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) and with not so much big name players compare the what you normally are accustommed working with.
A: I am a person of soccer, finding conviction and leadership commitment in a project, it is always good news and that I found in Mr. Warner and the leaders of T&T.

Flex-2: It has been 3 weeks already since you joined us. How is the experience being in T&T as a country and also working as a coach.
A: Very good, I like it, there is good planning, they know where they're going.

Flex-3: Many fans on the Soca Warriors Online are truly impressed with you (as a coach) and was even more impressed with the players you have been calling up for training with the senior team. It seems you are aiming to build a team to South Africa (2010) and Beyond as many youngsters were called in the process. My question is, what exactly are your intentions.
A: The initial invitation is to work and help the evolution of soccer in T&T, it is important for the present and look to the future.

Flex-4: If you were given the chance to recommend 5 T&T players to a club in your native Colombia on trial. Judging from the players you have seen so far (locally) who will you choose and why.
A: Each serious team should have its politics and its staff that recommends. That is not my position.

Flex-5: From reports on the internet. Many fans of Colombia and Costa Rica felt you are a good coach and probably could have won the World Cup with Colombia once with the likes of Carlos Valderrama and Rene Higuita (to name a few) on the team (1994). Colombia was a strong contender to win the world cup title, however, because of your defensive style it never happened, they complained you play to defensive and you dont normally get the best out of your team. Care to touch on this.
A: In a World Championships, you do not gain from the sentiment and favoritism, history says that are chosen the ones that achieve it.

Flex-6: What would you say is your proudest moment in your career as a manager.
A: Winning in soccer is not easy, for me it's a reason of pride each one of the achievements. Fantastic to have earned a National championship with the America of Cali in Colombia, or with the Al-Hilial in Saudi level of country, as also Continental Champion of Level club in America, with National of Medellin and Colombia, in Central America, with Costa Rica to level of UNCAF and in Asia with Al-Hilal.

Flex-7: You are the T&T coach (temporarily) if given the chance to stay on as our permanent coach and you accept. Do you feel you can emulate the great Leo Beenhakker and take us to another world cup, possible 2010. What do you feel you will need in order to fulfill such dream.
A: For now I am living my present, as always I am optimist of what can be achieved in it and in the future.

Flex-8: In 1999 you briefly coached Costa Rica, and in 2000 you also coached Peru for a few months. Why so short of a time ? did you have a bad experience while there. Please explain.
A: Two unfinished projects, with an experience that I do not feel bad, especially in my relationship with the players and respect for the ordinary fan in athletics, 9 months in Costa Rica, the official tournament that was disputed in this length of time we won it (UNCAF Cup). After the leadership failed to comply economically with the contract, I was enabled to enter into talks with selected of Peru, where the results were not as expected and the contract was broken, played six games of the eliminatory.

Flex-9: Who is your favorite player/s of all time.
A: No one in particular, always in every game, every time, every country, every team there is that one I sensitizes.

Flex-10: I assumed by now you probably watch all of T&T games at the 2006 world cup. What were your thoughts.
A: I belong to the committee of technical studies and development of FIFA, in world Cup 2006, corresponded to reports, analysis and follow-up of T&T, which joined the unconditional support and highly skilled Anton Corneal, made me feel well in the matter.

Flex-11: Did you know any T&T players before coming here.
A: All, I am an international technical and they are international players.

Flex-12: I remember Colombia historic triumph over Argentina in Buenos Aires by 5-0. You was the coach. How did you manage to pull that off and how was the feeling.
A: Well, with that game we had qualified to the world cup for a second time. Undoubtedly we succeed with all the respect we have for Argentina. We defended well, in their eagerness to attack, gave us space and Colombia did not spared.

Flex-13: Our first world cup qualifier is in June. What are your immediate plans to get us prepared and settled as you may know by now T&T has been going through some turmoil lately (since the 2006 WC) and it has been affecting us on and off the field it seems. In other words, how will you go about trying to get us back up mentally, prepared as a team and physically fit.
A: There is a work plan developed which includes friendly matches, with some players of local environment, others with the presence of internationals. Training dates monitoring and tracking of players’. And we are counting on this with the federation support, and we hope to do well.

Flex-14: If we get by our first qualifiers we could end up facing CONCACAF powerhouse USA in the next group stage which starts in August. A team that defeated Colombia while you were coach at the 1994 WC. Do you feel you have what it takes to get by them this time with T&T, a team who's less talented that the Colombian one you coached in 1994.
A: In Soccer and in life I am a very respectful person. That includes the times periods, the teams, and the selection COMPARISONS.

Flex-15: Rumor has it that T&T coaches wasn't given the power to pick the players they truly want, for example, retired players such as Dwight Yorke and Russell Latapy "might" get the call to play our supposed friendly against England on June 01st when many argued that the younger players should be given the chance as the experience could worth a lifetime. To add to that preparations have also been a downfall in T&T's campaign. Do you feel you have what it takes to overcome such task or how will you go about dealing with such issues.
A: I am not given to talking about what its said. In Soccer’ the most important and pure are its players. I appreciate very much the feeling of gratitude. If that scenario is optimal to pay tribute of respect and gratitude to those who have made history, then welcome, it does not change the objective to help in the evolution of soccer in T&T.

Thank You...
Mr. Francisco Maturana.

Note: - On behalf of the Soca Warriors Online I just what to say Thank You to Mr. Francisco Maturana for taking the time to do this interview for us. Please keep up the great work you are doing and we wish you all the best in the future.

Flex...great work fella.  He dance around some of the more sensitive topics, and thought he might have mentioned the Andres Escobar situation among the lows...but it's understandable I guess why he chose the more diplomatic route.

Good hustle to get this all the same :beermug:

I echo the sentiments already expressed.

One question though Flex, the questions seem to be in perfect Spanish, why the English translation look so babelfishy?

Well I had one of my Colombian friends check it for me and he said its good, so I went with that.... it does look a little babelfishy for real. I will stay on top of it in search of corrections.

Thanx.

Lol...everybody real beating up Maturana den  :D

I think Maturana been in this business long enough to know when to hold he piece and when to bring the noise.  For those of us who might be tempted to be critical remember a couple things:

1. He just reach and hasn't had much of a chance to officially make an evaluation.  I say 'officially' because maybe he was looking on from the outside, but now that he's here he's hardly had much time or opportunity to size up the state of TnT football.

2. He's only here for 6 months (for now)

3. He's been working in FIFA since his last coaching stint and likely has a good relationship with Jack.  Likely it was because of Jack's influence that he's here...and not just because it's the TTFF who was calling him.

4. Having just gotten here it is only fair that he starts off with everyone on a blank slate...give them room to hang deyself rather than bring pre-conceived notions.

5. He ent schupid...he knows who's signing his check

4. Having just gotten here it is only fair that he starts off with everyone on a blank slate...give them room to hang deyself rather than bring pre-conceived notions.

5. He ent schupid...he knows who's signing his check

I know u probably just giving the benefit of the doubt here, but i think it painfully obvious that it was Jack influence that have Maturana here. No way in hell he coaching us on the "merits" of the TTFF.

You right on points 4 and 5 tho.....he now start, to say anything remotely negative about the administration at this juncture would be suicide

Probably, I dunno enough to speak definitively...maybe there was enough money on the table for him to take the short-term gig...maybe it was an opportunity to take a squad with potential and use it to add more bonafides to his resume...or maybe it was the influence of a man who happens to be a FIFA VP.  Who knows.

Oh well, we goh just have to hope he and Corneal have dat aspect of this interpreter thing down pact yes....

Some time after the Guadeloupe game, they run a clip on the news of Maturana making some reactions to the game and Corneal translating it. Mih aunt speaking Spanish donkey years before ah born (she's a qualified interpreter) and she swear that Corneal 'translation' didn't have one iota of resemblance to what the man say.

Nobody ent find it strange that the TTFF ent hire a official translator yet?

Whatever you do, do it to the purpose; do it thoroughly, not superficially. Go to the bottom of things. Any thing half done, or half known, is in my mind, neither done nor known at all. Nay, worse, for it often misleads.
