Confed Cup and 2010 ticket plans revealed

Match tickets for next year’ s Confederations Cup, which will effectively be a test run for the 2010 World Cup , may cost as little as 10 (R80).

For the first round (quarterfinals) fans will pay R80 and the semifinals will cost 20 (R160). To watch the finals will set fans back 30 (R240) .

For the World Cup, the cheapest tickets will cost about R160. Prices for t he more expensive hospitality packages were released a few days ago.

This week, 2010 Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairman Irvin Khoza announced that the LOC had agreed on ticket prices for the Confederations Cup and they were waiting only for approval from Fifa. This is expected on Wednesday.

Khoza would not divulge the figures but a source within the LOC said they had pushed hard for the prices to be as low as possible.

“Even the poor people must be able to afford the tickets. These tournaments must be for the rich and the poor,” said the LOC insider .

It has also emerged that around 120000 tickets for the 2010 World Cup will be given away to allow poorer people to attend , organisers announced Friday. Tumi Makgabo, the spokesperson of the LOC, made the announcement at a Berlin travel trade fair, and said these tickets would be paid for by World Cup sponsors. As many tickets as possible will be made available to South Africans , she said .

“We must make sure the tickets go to the right people, ” she said.

It is still unclear when tickets for the World Cup, which will run from June 11-July 11 in 2010, will go on sale, but Makgabo said this would probably be in the second half of 2009 . There should be just under three million tickets available for the event. Games will be played at 10 stadiums.

This week, hospitality packages were announced and the average price of 1 450 (R11 600) is 39% less than spectators paid at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The cheapest package would cost between 380 and 1 400 (between R3040 and R11200) with the most expensive going for between 3500 and 6000 (R28000 and R48000)
