Carlos “The Rolls Royce” Edwards

2007-2008ME1Sunderland13/148501141362500400

“Nightmare” is the only word that can be used to describe Carlos Edwards’ season. Tipped to be one of the revelations of the Premier League after spurring the Black Cats to promotion, the Sunderland winger would suffer a hamstring injury after only two matches in the hallowed territory of the BPL. After missing 11 games, he barely had the time to get into stride, when he broke his leg during Sunderland’s third win of the season. He would return 4 months later in time to help Roy Keane’s side to three straight victories that effectively staved off relegation, but the season had already been compromised.  He first has to regain his confidence before he can even hope to be the same player. His fans can only hope that his summer engagements with the Warriors aid in recovering his sharpness.

Kenwyne Jones

2005-2006FE2Southampton39/401733194319101251700

2007-2008FE2/E1South/Sunder34/3525973529359520810510

KJ would miss Southampton’s first two games of the season, with a hamstring injury but would sign his return to the field with a goal. Amid reports of interest by Roy Keane’s Sunderland, already loaded with three T&T internationals, Kenwyne put in a transfer request and went on ‘strike’ provoking some choice words from his manager and the Saint’s fans. Nevertheless, a week later, KJ became a black cat, in exchange for $5 million and…Stern John.
After an encouraging debut against Manchester United at Old Trafford, KJ opened his Sunderland account by scoring a sublime goal and setting up the winner against Reading. He would open eyes with 4 goals and 3 assists in six matches, of which a stellar performance in a losing effort et the Emirates Stadium. He would chip in with the original assist, from there onwards, but as his team fell into the losing habit, the goals would dry up until the last game of the year when he would singlehandedly engineer a 3-1 win over fellow strugglers Bolton. Despite playing a vital role in a four game unbeaten home streak, it would take a 1-0 away win over European spot chasing Aston Villa during his absence, and speculation that the team played better tactically without him, to jog him into scoring in two successive matches.
Sunderland’s success in staying up, his 10 assists, seven goals and phenomenal work rate would spark persistent rumours of interest from several established Premiership clubs. However, an apparently serious knee injury picked up in a collision with David James during Trinidad and Tobago’s gala friendly with England in the early summer risks to seriously shorten his 2008-2009 season…much to the “pleasure” of Roy Keane – a big fan of “useless international matches”…

Dwight Yorke
SeasonPositionDivisionTeamPicksMinStartsFGPWDLGoalsAssistsCSYCRC
2006-2007ME2Sunderland36/3824792819332688501240
2007-2008ME1Sunderland31/3620702313271431010451

The fact that Dwight Yorke managed to clock more than 2000 minutes anchoring the midfield in a Premiership club at the age of 36, is testimony of the work ethic that the former much reviled playboy striker has developped. Despite missing nine games because of injury, the former captain of the Soca Warriors managed to start 17 games and even incremented his considerable premiership goal haul (albeit in what is probably his worst result in the league – a 1-7 creaming at Everton).
He even broke his international retirement temporarily to play the last 15 minutes of the gala friendly against England as a guest player.
However, Dwight featured very little in the last three months of Sunderland’s season, where their battle for Premiership survival was essentially won, and there remains some hesitation on the side of the Sunderland powers that be, if not Roy Keane himself, to renew his now expired contract . Time will tell if he will participate in yet again another Premiership campaign.

Well done MidKnight
this is reminiscent of your World Cup thread in 2006 ;)
Whatever you do, do it to the purpose; do it thoroughly, not superficially. Go to the bottom of things. Any thing half done, or half known, is in my mind, neither done nor known at all. Nay, worse, for it often misleads.

Russell “The Little Magician” Latapy

2007-2008MS1Falkirk40/4114431243312714251200

At 39 years old, Russell Latapy kept on defying the laws of nature with Falirk in the SPL helping them to maintain their third successful season in the top tier of Scottish football. Even while playing substantially less than the previous year, being primarily used as a second half substitute, he would still feature in over 30 matches for the Bairns, chalking up 4 assists and two goals. He has recently declared himself as willing and able to go another season before preparing his probable entry into the back room staff.

Darryl Roberts
SeasonPositionDivisionTeamPicksMinStartsFGPWDLGoalsAssistsCSYCRC
2007-2008MN1SpartaRotterdam32/36152517530261770210
After his initiation to the highest level of Dutch football at the end of last season, Darryl would become a full fledged player on Sparta, but often asked to play multiple roles, sometimes starting, sometimes coming off the bench, sometimes as asecond striker, sometimes as a right midfielder, sometimes as an orthodox forward. Despite this instability, he would chalk up 7 strikes, including 3 against traditional Dutch powerhouses, Ajax and PSV Eindhoven. Nevertheless, at the end of the season with Sparta just avoiding relegation, he would be released by the Rotterdam outfit. He is currently unattatched but remains one of the few survivors from the Wim era on the national team.

Anthony Warner
SeasonPositionDivisionTeamPicksMinStartsFGPWDLGoalsAssistsCSYCRC
2006-2007GE2Leeds/Fulham/Norwich44/512520282828941500620
2007-2008GE1/E2Fulham/Barnsley31/4572088841300300

Anthony Warner started off the season as Fulham’s starting goalkeeper due to an injury to incumbent number one Anton Niemi. He would play three unremarkable league games until the addition of veteran US goalminder Kasey Keller to “Fulhamerica”, plus a Carling Cup shutout of League Two Shrewsbury. Off the first squad with the return of Niemi from injury in September, and then recalled to the bench in October, when Keller injured himself in turn, Warner would play the bridesmaid role until the end of January. Called to start against a pesky League one Bristol Rovers outfit in an FA cup replay, he would keep a clean sheet but go down in the penalty shootout. This would be his last competitive outing of the season until a loan deal with Championship outfit Barnsley, afforded him his first starts since August. However, on February 16th, a fateful FA cup tie with Liverpool would go on without the now cuptied Warner. The Barnsley second choice would pull of a masterful performance to inspire the Tykes past the Champions League team and Tony would fall completely out of the club’s circulation, in a year where it would make history by getting to the semi-finals in Wembley.
A new injury at Craven cottage would see him being recalled to the bench in the Premiership in March, but he would take no part in the club’s miraculous last month Premiership rescue operation. This is unfortunately, another season that will seem to confirm the “second rate” status that kept Warner off the Soca Warriors world cup team.

Chris “Me Mum” Birchall

2007-2008ME2/S1Coventry/St.Mirren15/37606631222802200

Coventry went from bad to worse this season, finishing as the last non relegated team thanks to other results going their way on the last gameday. Chris would not even take part in a half of a game during this league campaign: Having first been loaned out to St. Mirren by manager Iain Dowie, his decent stint on the struggling Scottish Premier League side was cut short by a month long hamstring injury in December. On his return he reaggravated the injury and was subsequently neglected by his replacement, Chris Coleman, in the reserves on his return. Ironically, his time with the second string saw him discover a new talent as a striker where he would score 6 goals up top at precisely when Coventry was struggling for goals.
Like several others, his personal blacklist would persist, and despite his favourable age, work ethic and experience, at the time of writing it is doubtful that he will be part of the Soca Warriors 2010 campaign, despite outspoken declarations of his desire to continue in the red shirt.

Stern John

2007-2008FE1/E2Sunlun/South47/5031703620431214172041011

On May 4th 2008, Stern John was sent off in the 80th minute in Southampton’s last match off the season, shortly after having scored the second of two goals that had allowed them to equalise and then go ahead against Sheffield United. For 110 anxious minute plus stoppage time, he would wait in the dressing room wondering if he would be remembered as the man who saved Southampton, or who sent them down.
This match basically summed up the last 3 years of Stern John’s career. Loaned off to Derby by Coventry in September of 2005 he would be booed off the pitch there as “That Fat Bastard” and consigned to the reserves, while simultaneously scoring the goals that took Trinidad and Tobago into their decisive World Cup playoff against Bahrain. While going on a 10 goal tear in the second half of the season, “Half Slab” would be heavily criticised for his lack of activity in the pre World Cup friendlies, and the goalless world cup of the Soca Warriors.
Blacklisted from the national team, his spotty goal return would see him transferred by the Sky blues to Sunderland, where he would be used as a starter by the future Championship winning team. However, once in the Premiership, he would be left out of Roy Keane’s plans, despite scoring the equaliser in Sunderland’s second game of the season. Traded to Southampton as part of a deal to acquire Kenwyne Jones, his fellow blacklisted countryman, “Sternturninho”, would start firing on all cylinders a month later with 9 goals in 12 games, and followed up a missed equalising penalty attempt with 8 in 14 games from February to April to celebrate the lifting of the blacklist and his reinstatement to the National team. With Stern holding Southampton above water practically singlehanded, a 3 game min drought at the wrong moment meant a compulsory victory over playoff chasing Sheffield Utd on the last day was needed.
“Bravo” fully obliged, with two goals in 15 minutes to put the Saints up. Barely 10 minutes later, he would indirectly pay for the homage to Mickey Trotman on the second goal, as his celebration yellow would be added to one given for a last gasp desperation tackle.
History will record Stern John as the man who as the fourth best goalscorer in the Championship division, avoided the Saint’s relegation in 2007-08. It could have been so much different. The very proof that there’s a fine line between greatness and villainy. “John Stern” The number 14 with more nicknames than Brazil has titles, should know something about that…

SeasonPositionDivisionTeamPicksMinStartsFGPWDLGoalsAssistsCSYCRC
2007-2008MH1Ujpest FC17/24933 124177460?400
After a year back in the proleague, Denzil eventually signed to Ujpest FC in the Hungarian league. Many wondered why Denzil would look to ply his trade in such unlikely pastures. After an irregular half season, playing many games in Hungary’s extended cup competition system, Denzil would be released amicably by the former Hungarian power, experiencing difficulties meeting its financial obligations to its players. In May, Bleeder would return to play with Caledonia AIA of the Proleague, having lost his place and captain’s armband in the National team during his inactivity.

Colin Samuel

2007-2008FUS1TorontoFC19/20160319131326 1130320

Signing with the expansion MLS team Toronto FC, left Colin Samuel with a very short summer vacation, and more importantly, very little time to adapt to a new league already three months in course. Designated as Toronto’s starting striker, Colin would struggle within a struggling team and would only score one goal – a penalty – in 16 matches before hitting 2 in 2 games at the tail end of what had already been a dissapointing season even before his arrival.
The following season, Samuel would play one match, in which he missed a penalty, before his amicable departure from the club was announced for “family reasons”. Samuel has already signed with Jason Scotland’s old club, St. Johnstone in the Scottish first division, for next season.

Signed for another year as backup for the Swans back line, Austin got in a surprisingly large number of starts, partly due to the large number of games that the team had to play, in between cup engagements, postponements and replays.
The return of injured regular starters relegated him to little playing time in the first two months of the new year, but a hamstring tear to left back Marcos Painter saw him roar back into the squad in the last two months during its sucessful championship season.
Kevin Austin was offerered another one-year contract with the Championship bound Swans but declined it for a more stable contract and more playing time at League 2 Chesterfield.

Despite his recently ended international retirement, the unlikely scorer of the most important goal in Trinidad and Tobago history remained the outfield foreign Soca Warrior clocking the most minutes all season. A cornerstone of Swansea’s defence, he would start almost every league game of the season, with the exception of a month in February, when he was out with a knee injury. His importance to Swansea was underlined when he delayed his international return to allow an injured thigh that he was playing with time to heal...We hope that this loyalty will be remembered by Roberto Martinez for the semi final round world cup qualifiers

Jason “Rocket” Scotland

Originally brought in as cover for talismanic Swans striker Lee Trundle, Scotland was soon thrown into the spotlight when the latter was sold to Championship new boys Bristol City. Despite widespread scepticism on his capacity to be up to the task, Jason grabbed his chance with both feet scoring in a losing effort in his first English football match. He would score 6 goals in his first nine matches, of which two against compatriot Clayton Ince. A five match dry spell would be interrupted by 2 more in three games. When a similar dry spell came, it would end with a bang, with him engineering a 3-0 dismantling of Northampton, and a 6-2 mauling of Horsham in the FA cup in successive matches. He would then be decisive with 8 goals in 14 matches after Christmas.
After missing a decisive penalty kick in the shootout with MKDons in the Johnson’s Paint Trophy semifinals (despite having scored a decisive penalty during regular play earlier on in the match) Jason would go on a tear in the month of March scoring 9 times in 10 matches. He would ultimately fall just short of the 30 goal mark, but his 29 goals and 6 assists would earn him the Swansea players Player of the Year Award. Ironically, even though he surpassed anything the former Swans idol, Trundle ever did in three seasons, in just one, Jason will still need to make his mark in the Championship to convince the Swans fans. This might seem strange, but nothing should, for a Trinidadian named Scotland playing club football in England for a Welsh club.

Clayton Ince continued his fine stint at Wallsall after last years promotion. Tipped as relegation strugglers this season, the saddlers finished comfortable in mid table on the back of 18 Ince clean sheets, despite a difficult start to the season. In an impressive show of confidence Ince would play every minute of Wallsall’s 53 games this season, as he redons the mantle of T&T’s number one.

2007-2008DE3Gillingham22/411761221822651110411
In his first match of the 2007-2008 season, Ian Cox received marching orders from the referee. 17 games, one goal, and own goal, and a conceded penalty later, he would fall foul of a thigh injury that essentially ended his season. Despite recovering in early January, he would find himself out of Marc Stimson’s plans after the loan acquisiton of Reading’s Adam Bygrave, playing only 4 more games. Gillingham would go down, with his last game being a rare start in an inauspicious 4-0 pasting by Hartlepool in early March. At the end of the season, the 37 year old Cox effectively put an end to his long professional career by signing with seventh division team Maidstone.

Brent Sancho

2007-2008DE3/S3Millwall/Ross2/1118022201100000

Brent Sancho had difficulty finding a club at the beginning of the season; in fact he would not sign with a club (League 1 Millwall) until December, and on a one month short term contract. However, prior to this Brent was much more involved in the launching of the Trinidad and Tobago football player association’s association and representing the players in their ongoing pay dispute with the federation than playing club football on the field and he was not able to regain his match fitness in such a short period. His next stop would be the Scottish second division in April at already promoted Ross County, where he was able to play his grand total of two games for the season.
It is speculated that Brent’s blacklisting from the national team neither stopped when the blacklist was officially listed (several months after its existence was officially denied), nor was restricted to his national duty, hence his fall from grace from World Cup starter to long term unemployment. However, several clubs have shown interest since the end of the season. It is therefore to be hoped that with the arbitration of the players dispute, he will be able to get both facets of his career back on track.

Kelvin Jack, like Brent Sancho would pay for his leadership role in the players dispute, at Gillingham. Blacklisted from the national team, he would equally find himself as the clubs senior keeper exiled to the stands for most of the season. Put on the transfer list in late January, he went on to break his leg in a freak accident while on trial at Barnsley in February. It is incertain when he will be ready to regain competition.

- Big Marv was a fixture in the Rovers defense for the first half of the season, chalking up4 goals, 3 MOTM awards and contributing to 8 clean sheets. However he would aggravated his now famous knee cartilage injury around Christmas, and despite being able to return in mid january would end up reaggravating it a month later. His decision to finally undergo the much discussed surgery put hit out of commission for the season. Raith would miss his undeniable presence (only 2 clean sheets in 19 matches without him as opposed to 10 in 25 without him), particularly during their promotion playoff with Airdrie. Marvin is currently rehabilitating and will be out for at least the first two months of next season. As such, he negociated amicably to leave the club to spare them his maintenance costs during this time. It is unclear what his footballing future will hold at his return.

Andre Boucaud

2007-2008ME4Wycombe30/50292321151500430

For his first season in English professional football, Andre would experience the thrill of a promotion chase and playoff. However, it was somewhat bittersweet aas he spent the vast majority of it watching on from the bench or the tribunes. He would hope for more than 300 minutes in his second year in the football league, assuming that he stays on with Wycombe.

Josh Johnson

2007-2008ME4Wrexham16/4710200932400300

Josh Johnson’s frustration at the Dragons was to continue well into his second season. Apart from 4 late sub entrances in August, he would be rarely in caretaker Brian Carey’s team selections. The arrival of Brian Little in November gave a bit of hope, but the new Wrexham manager’s patience barely lasted until Christmas. Josh would not see another minute outside of the reserves and predictably, did not escape the 22 man clearing out effected by Little following the Dragons relegation to non professional football.

Jason Norville
SeasonPositionDivisionTeamPicksMinStartsFGPWDLGoalsAssistsCSYCRC
2007-2008ME4/E5Barnet/Woking27/3515592052698963410

On September 15, Jason Norville played in his first game for Barnet almost a year to the day that a serious ankle injury put paid to the promising winger’s season. The very next game he would score his 4th goal for the Bees and start 6 successive games. However he would fall out of favour and then a knee ligament injury would put him out of commission in December. On his return from the infirmary he would find himself on the transfer list. A step down to non league Woking would yield  goals and three assists, before his fragile ankle put him out three days before the end of the season. He should find himself in league 2 come next season, unless his porcelain disposition scares potential recruiters away.

2007-2008FE4NottsCounty29/388279123541421510

At Notts county, Hector Sam would spent most of his time coming off the bench but by December, these appearances became shorter and rarer as Notts struggled, while he struggled to score. By mid January it became clear he was no longer in Ian McParland’s plans, and by March, he and Notts county terminated their contract mutually, with only 2 goals to show for his stint there..

Ricky Shakes

2007-2008ME4Brentford45/4526632714361671943700

After being released by league one bound Swindon Town, Shakes would find refuge in recently demoted Brentford. The Brixton native would play an integral part in the Brentford set up alternating between starting and coming off the bench. Despite his two strikes in the first two games of the season, Shakes would have trouble cementing himself as a starter under Tetty Butcher and Brentford would struggle in the first half of the season with only 5 wins to their name.
From January, under Andy Scott Shakes would get a sustained run as a starter and Brentford would slowly pull itself out of danger(11-6-9 with Shakes starting as opposed to 5-1-9 with him as a sub)  and into the middle of the table. Shakes would chip in with 2 more goals and three assists. However, inexplicably, at the end of the season, Shakes would be informed of his expendability for a second year running.

Silvio Spann
SeasonPositionDivisionTeamPicksMinStartsFGPWDLGoalsAssistsCSYCRC
2007-2008ME4Wrexham13/38734951102910111

Having missed out on the World Cup through injury, Silvio Spann made the most of his inclusion in the 2007 Gold Cup to grab the eyes of potential recruiters with principally, his world class long range dead ball strike against El Salvador. In August, he was able to sign with Wrexham, a favourite destination for Tinidad and Tobago players since the end of the 1990’s, but hard a hard time settling to the rugged play of League 2. On October 27, he would come on early against Notts County to replace an injured teammate, score a second half goal and get sent off in the closing minutes. An injury plagued month of December would come at the wrong time in Brian Little’s opinion and he would languish in the reserves for most of the second half of the season.
Judged too soft on the ball, and too unconcerned off it by Dragon fans from very early, he did not excape the post relegation culling, and is currently transfer listed.

Good stuff.

One error I noted. This: Carlos Edwards 2006-2007   M   E2   Sunderland
should say Luton/Sunderland as he only join Sunderland in January.

Not sure why it wasn't like that before since that was old data, but thanks. Fixed.

Yeah, I did a similar thread last year as well. I was going to start a blog but all the people who likely to be interested in that kind of data will be here anyway...so say what
