Maturana not losing ‘World Cup’ focus.
By: Randy Bando (ttproleague).

While Trinidad and Tobago may be vying for a place in the Digicel Caribbean Championship finals to be held in Jamaica from December 4th - 14th, head coach Francisco Maturana isn’t losing focus on the ultimate goal, which is to lead the nation to its second World Cup appearance.

T&T salvaged a 3-2 win against Antigua and Barbuda in their opening match of the Caribbean Championships Group H at the Marvin Lee Stadium.

T&T down at the half 1-0—Antiguan Peter Byers the scorer—overpowered their opponents to bang in three items with Cornell Glen, Arnold Dwarika and Andre Toussaint all getting their names to the score sheet before Randolph Burton added another for the Antiguans for a 3-2 finish.

“They were better physically,” said Maturana following the match.

The Colombian explained that his players weren’t cohesive enough in the opening half which led to them being down a goal and forcing a couple of changes, one of which Dwarika replaced Aurtis Whitley.

“The first game is always difficult,” Maturana continued through his interpreter. “It’s a victory and a victory that we have constructed technically.”

“It’s not normal to find form in a tournament but our goal is still to qualify for the World Cup,” added Maturana who led his native Colombia to two World Cup appearances.

Maturana is also aware that much is needed to be done expressing dissatisfaction in a key factor, his players.

The T&T coach noted that important players such as defender Seon Power and midfielder Aurtis Whitley—struck by injuries—and Khaleem Hyland who was unattached for most part of 2008 are all now coming back into playing action which is a problem in their match readiness.

Maturana’s charges will be in action again on Friday, this time against St Kitts/Nevis in their second Group H match of the Caribbean Championships as they look to solidify their top spot.
The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

As is usual everybody was cussing Maturana when he first took the job, instead of cussing him he should have been congratulated for the way he was giving the local players oppurtunities. It was blatant how Beenie and Wim refused to do the same.Maturana have shown that with time he can build a team with a very good mix of overseas and home based players. He has gone some way in giving the local boys the confidence and Trinidad is looking good for SA,had Wim been kicked out after Beenie left we would have been in a better situation to-day,especially if Maturana was in charge. It is nice to see how some of the players he has exposed are being looked at and may possibly move to Europe, who can argue with that.It seems to me that most people on this MB just want to cuss man at the slightest move that does not measure up to their ideas. I would like to say that Maturana and Corneal is doing a very good job win or lose.

How much time did Beenie have to give "local players" opportunities?

He came in at a time when we had lost our first 2 matches in the Hex.  When exactly was he to give "local players" an opportunity?

Besides.....Aurtis Whitley, Cyd Gray & Densil Theobald wasn't "local" enough for you or something?  How many "local players" on the team would have been enough for you?

As for Wim....how many "non local players" did he use in the Digicel Cup?  In the Gold Cup?  When we played Japan?

Yuh talkin bout Maturana.  How many "local based" players did he use in the games against Guatemala in Guatemala and the victory against the USA?  You realize that Maturana used the same number of "local based" players in those games as Beenie did in the World Cup?

Allyuh does jes talk a pack a ass when allyuh ready yes.  A setta dotish talk about local and foreign based.  ALL A DEM IS TRINBAGONIAN!  ALL!!

Palos yuh talking as if yuh cyah remember how Wim refused to play friendlies bcoz he couldn't get the overseas players, as for Beenie he took us to Germany but he also had his faults.I am aware that the overseas players are better but not all the time, the fact is he has people to fall back on becoz he is not afraid to try the homeboys, that is my point.Wim was never intrested in the local players but was forced to play them and he made that quite clear.Bigup to Mat and his men they are doing a better job than Wim,as for Beenie refusing to play we best ever player apart from the last match for 20 mins was unforgivable.Ah cyah say no more.

Breds....ANY National coach want to field THEIR BEST TEAM. Wim was denied that opportunity from his 4th game in charge.  He went to Austria with a mixture of local and foreign based players.  He went to Japan with a mainly local based squad.  We played Panama & St Vincent with virtually the full Soca Warriors World Cup team and then the blacklist came into effect.  What exactly was he supposed to do?
