Adu leaves US team to join Benfica
13 hours, 54 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP)—Freddy Adu will not play for the United States in the remaining games of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, U.S. coach Bob Bradley said after Wednesday’s 2-0 win against Honduras.

Adu scored a goal in the Americans’ opening 4-0 win against Grenada on Saturday at Seattle. He had one shot on goal Wednesday and was replaced in the 64th minute by Charlie Davies.

“This will be the last game Freddy will be here for the Gold Cup,” Bradley said after the game. “That was part of the arrangement from the start.”

Adu will participate in the preseason with Portuguese club Benfica, which he joined in 2007. Last season Benfica loaned him to Monaco of France’s Ligue 1, where he played just 169 minutes over 10 matches.

“It’s important to get preseason in with your team,” Adu said. “It gives you the best chance of being part of the team for the season.”

Bradley said there will be no specific replacement for Adu on the U.S. roster. Because the Americans reached the final of the Confederations Cup on June 28 and were playing in back-to-back tournaments, CONCACAF allowed the United States to expand its roster from 23 to 30.

With Kaka choosing '8' as his number, Raul Albiol picking up the No.18 shirt and Cristiano Ronaldo the famous No.9 jersey, there were no available options for the 21-year-old striker, who was presented in a numberless shirt.

Benzema will have to wait for one of his team-mates to depart the club to have a number at his disposal, with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar's No.19 shirt being a likely option.

when asked if he was here to replace raul, benzema said. absolutely not ,he jus wants to play with a bigger club

Wigan Athletic have had their bid for Swansea City striker Jason Scotland accepted according to reports this evening with the fee believed to be £2 million giving the Swans a healthy profit on the £25,000 they paid St. Johnstone 2 years ago.

Latics boss Roberto Martinez has already brought in one familiar face to him, with Jordi Gomez his first signing having played under him last season whilst on loan at the Liberty Stadium from Espanyol and now Scotland coming in shows Martinez is keen to keep faith with players who have performed for him in the past.

It is understood that the 30 year old Trinidad and Tobago international has agreed personal terms on a three year deal and all that remains is the official announcement that should come tomorrow (Friday).

PENNANT COMPLETES ZARAGOZA MOVE
Sportinglife.com

Real Zaragoza have completed the signing of Jermaine Pennant after his release by Liverpool.

The former Arsenal youngster passed a medical with the Spanish outfit on Thursday and will join their bid for survival next season after being promoted back to the Primera Division.

The 26-year-old becomes Zaragoza's first signing of the summer and joins for nothing on a three-year deal.

Pennant told the club's website: "I wanted to come to Spain and I had offers from important teams in Europe but joined Real Zaragoza.

"I really want to get started and do well in the league."

Pennant spent time on loan at Portsmouth last season after being frozen out at Anfield.

The former England Under-21 winger impressed for Liverpool in the 2007 Champions League final defeat by AC Milan but found opportunities increasingly limited from then on.

@eurosportmoves tweets: Busy day for Sunderland - they are close to signing Fraizer Campbell and Lee Cattermole

Premier League - Sunderland close on Campbell
Eurosport - Fri, 10 Jul 14:48:00 2009

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce hopes to push through his first summer signing over the weekend after agreeing a fee with Manchester United for Fraizer Campbell.

It is understood United have accepted a bid of around £5 million for the England Under-21 international, who has been courted by Hull in recent weeks.

Campbell is expected to head for the north-east to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms as Bruce steps up his efforts to strengthen the squad he inherited from Ricky Sbragia.

The Huddersfield-born 21-year-old has made just four senior appearances for United but impressed during a loan spell at Hull during the 2007-08 season, when he scored 15 goals in 37 appearances.

He spent much of last season at Tottenham after joining the club on a temporary basis as part of the deal which took Dimitar Berbatov in the opposite direction.

The former United trainee made 22 appearances, 13 of them as a substitute, and scored three goals during his spell at White Hart Lane.

Premier League - Wigan rebuff Cattermole bid
Eurosport - Fri, 10 Jul 15:12:00 2009

Wigan Athletic have rejected a bid from Sunderland for Lee Cattermole, saying the midfielder is not for sale.

The Black Cats followed up former Latics boss Steve Bruce's interest in the 21-year-old by submitting an undisclosed offer.

However, Wigan rebuffed the bid "within the hour", with new manager Roberto Martinez determined to keep him at the DW Stadium.

Martinez said: "Lee is not for sale. End of story.

"He is a fantastic player, a leader on and off the field, and he is central to our plans going forwards. We are not interested in selling him which is why this offer was rejected immediately."

Sunderland boss Bruce is already hoping to push through his first summer signing over the weekend after agreeing a fee with Manchester United for Fraizer Campbell.

It is understood United have accepted a bid of around £5million for the England U21s international, who has been courted by Hull in recent weeks.

Official: Sochaux and Hammarby agree to terms on Davies deal

American striker Charlie Davies is headed to France by all accounts. A statement from Sochaux’s official website states that the deal to bring Davies to the club from Hammarby should be finished soon.

"A deal in principle has been agreed upon on Friday afternoon between Sochaux and Hammarby concerning the transfer of Charlie Davies. The player's contract and signing should be completed next week,” the statement read.

Davies: Sochaux want me to develop into a big time player

The official word has come down today that Charlie Davies is headed to France to join Ligue 1 side Sochaux. The striker has been impressive with the U.S. National Team this summer and has now secured a move to one of the top leagues in Europe.

"I'm really looking forward to the opportunity," Davies said in a press conference ahead of the Gold Cup match with Haiti on Saturday. "It's pretty much the same situation as when I went to Hammarby. They want me to step in right away and really help the team."

Black Cats land Campbell
Skysports.com

United striker completes North East switch

Sunderland have completed the signing of Fraizer Campbell from Manchester United on a four-year contract.

The England Under 21 international underwent a medical at the Stadium of Light on Saturday morning before putting pen-to-paper on a long-term deal.

United will receive an initial £3.5million fee, which could rise to a maximum of £6million should various criteria be met.

Earlier in the summer it had looked as though Campbell has on his way to Hull City - with whom he helped gain promotion to the Premier League the season before last - but he has instead opted for a move to the Black Cats.

Campbell spent last season on-loan at Tottenham, whom he moved to as part of the deal that took Dimitar Berbatov to United, but struggled for playing time.

Having made just nine starts during his White Hart Lane sojourn, Campbell will be hoping for substantially more playing time under Steve Bruce at Sunderland.

Campbell's impressive displays at the European U21 Championship caught the eye and he will aim for more of the same next term.

Man.U fans our next number 7 Sergio Aguero
« Reply #380 on: July 11, 2009, 12:21:45 PM »
I did not post this in the official transfer thread because the deal is not made yet, but remember I said it first. He's gonna be our next number 7. I been praying fergie signs him since I heard Ronaldo was leaving, now the speculations starts.

Atletico - No bids for Aguero
President determined to keep hold of club's best players
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has denied reports that Manchester United have made an offer for Sergio Aguero.

Argentine striker Aguero has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford as the Premier League champions look to increase their attacking options after losing Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

Reports had claimed that United had offered £30million plus Portuguese winger Nani in an attempt to persuade Atletico to sell.

However, Cerezo has dismissed the latest bout of speculation and confirmed he had not received a bid from United for Aguero.

Cerezo also outlined his determination to keep hold of the club's key players after Barcelona acknowledged an interest in former Red Devils striker Diego Forlan.

"Manchester United has not made any offers for 'Kun' [Aguero] - and we will not sell any player," Cerezo told Marca.

"We will not sell Aguero, Forlan, Simao - because we don't want to sell any of our players.

"We will keep all of our players because we are very good as we are and we have a great team."

I did not care to much for Benzema or Huntaleer, but if this move happens, Man.U have a very talented player on their hands, Their is even talk of Berbatov as part of the deal. I'll take him over Berba anyday. He reminds me of Messi and Tevez in one. Just my opinion on Kun

I dont see the need to buy a big name striker...because when Berba and Rooney starts he'll sulk like Tevez...Owen knows his role...yea i'd love Aguero to come but it would only cause either himself or Berba to sulk about being on the bench..

and Nani cant leave..he needs at least 1 more season to prove his worth...

The only big name player that should come in is Ribery...and if he stays at Munich or goes to money land then we could go after David Silva...we made a bid last season but Valencia wanted too much...

Both of those players can play the wing and a striker role if necessary.... forget Kun

I don't care for Ribery, he is not interested in playing for United anyway.... If he comes, I won't mind Berba sulking on the bench, I never liked his slow style of play. We can keep Nani and send Berba in a cash plus player deal. I like David Silva too.

Samuel Eto'o hopeful of making £18 million Manchester United move
Despite the collapse of his proposed move to Manchester City, Samuel Eto'o is still hopeful of securing a transfer to the Premier League – with Manchester United

The Barcelona striker's agent, Josep Maria Mesalles, is optimistic that the English champions will make a formal bid of £18 million for the Cameroon striker tomorrow.

Manchester City publicly ended negotiations with Eto'o on Friday evening, having grown exasperated with the length of time the transfer was taking. City made a bid of £25.5 million for Eto'o and, because he only has a year left on his contract, left it up to the player and the club to decide how much of that Eto'o would get as a pay-off.

It is understood the player wanted as much as a £13 million share, on top of the wages of £200,000 per week City were offering. City will now concentrate on wrapping up a deal to sign Carlos Tevez, expected to be confirmed this week, and on their continued pursuit of Chelsea's John Terry.

United would be able to get Eto'o for significantly cheaper than City, with the 28 year-old eager to play in the Champions League. One source in Spain suggested that United are prepared to offer Eto'o £150,000 per week, but said there is a problem with his demand for a four-year contract.

Sir Alex Ferguson is apparently a long-standing admirer of the player, who scored the opening goal against United in Barcelona's 2-0 Champions League final victory in May.

Eto'o's wage demands have painted the player into a corner. His relationship with Barcelona has deteriorated dramatically, culminating in his rejection of a proposed contract extension – sent by text message - on the same wage terms of his current deal, believed to be £130,000 per week.

He made it clear he wants to leave on Friday, having been angered by comments made about him by Barcelona president Joan Laporta.

Eto'o's other options are limited. Long-standing suitors AC Milan have decided to try and sign Brazil striker Luis Fabiano from Sevilla instead, while Inter Milan and Chelsea have identified targets in other areas.

Barcelona are desperate to sell Eto'o rather than lose him for nothing next summer. David Villa of Valencia is their first-choice replacement, with Diego Forlan of Atletico Madrid their back-up.

Eto'o, however, may choose to play a game of brinkmanship and wait until the end of the window when Barcelona may be forced to drop their asking price.
