Ministry hands out $2.4m to athletes

Double Olympic silver medalist Richard Thompson along with 13 other national track and field stars, will be the major beneficiaries of the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs Elite Athlete Assistance Programme. The ministry will release just over $2.4 million towards athletes' training and preparations on Tuesday, at their Abercromby St, Port of Spain offices.

Other athletes expected to receive funding are top male sprinters Marc Burns and Darrel Brown with Quarter-miler Renny Quow and shot putter Cleopatra Borel-Brown also benefit from programme. The athletes from other sports receiving funding include Kimba Collymore (Swimming), Dexter St Louis (table tennis), Colin Ramasra (squash), Roger Daniel (rifle shooting) and Robert Auerbach (trap and skeet
shooting).

The programme was started in 2004 as a means of supporting athletes preparing for major international tournaments such as the World Championships and Olympic Games. In addition to the $2.4 million, the Ministry will present the sum of $347,921 as grant funding for sport development for the sport of golf.
