FACT

In 1998, Columbus Crew rookie forward Stern John scored three goals off the bench during the Crew's 5-3 victory over the Kansas City Wizards. He became the second substitute in league history to net three goals in a game, and he was the first player in MLS history to notch three hat tricks in a season.

All of this was accomplished during a roughly 10-minute stretch at Ohio Stadium. The striker from Trinidad & Tobago scored in the 71st, 79th and 81st minutes, with the second of those goals giving Columbus a 4-3 lead it never would relinquish.

John scored 26 goals in 27 games that season, so it was pretty surprising to say the least that he didn't get the start against the Wizards.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.
