‘Underdogs’ tag just fine by Ince
Express & Star

Walsall goalkeeper Clayton Ince insists the club’s underdog tag suits them and believes they can spring a surprise on League One this season.

The Saddlers head to Charlton tomorrow searching for their first win since the opening day against one of the promotion favourites.

But Ince expects Chris Hutchings’ side to upset the odds, because the Addicks will underestimate them.

The 37-year-old said: “I look at us as sleeping giants – we are small but we have big goals. Most clubs underestimate us.

“They think we have young players and a small team, but I think all the players here have ambitions to bring this club to a higher level.

“When I first knew about Walsall they were in the Championship, so it would be great to put the team back up there.

“The club can go places. Everyone has shown that.

“We got relegated and when we came back in to League One we were just out of the play-offs, then we’ve been in the top half for the past couple of seasons.”

The Trinidad and Tobago international reckons the squad have the ability to win promotion this season, despite an inconsistent opening to their League One campaign.

He said: “It would be nice to do something like that. It would round everything off and it would be a great achievement to go from League Two, League One and then the Championship.

“It would be a great achievement for any player here. It’s not a hard thing to do. We have to stay focused, motivated and have belief in ourselves that we can get there.”
