Silver for Bovell in Spanish Open

Olympic medallist George Bovell III missed out on completing the freestyle double at the XI Spanish Open Swimming Championship in Malaga, Spain when he finished joint second in the men’s 100-metre freestyle final yesterday. Competing out of lane four in the ten-man final, Bovell touched the wall in 50.63 seconds, the same as Jose Antonio Tellez to trail Poland’s Konrad Czerniak who won in 49.98. The other finishers in the race were Eloi Montserrat (50.73), Joaquin Belza (50.94), Brenton Forns (51.11), Daniel Caballerro (51.32), Aitor Rodriguez (51.66), Yerai Iriarte (51.79) and Manel Ezeiza (51.98). On Saturday, the 27-year-old Bovell III stopped the clock at 50.16 seconds to win his semifinal-two heat, while swimming out of lane one.

The other qualifiers from Bovell’s heat were Joaquin Belza (50.49), Czerniak (50.85), Montserrat (50.86) and Rodriguez (51.45). In semifinal one, Tellez was the top qualifier in 50.75 followed by Caballero (51.11), Forns (51.48), Iriarte (51.68) and Ezeiza (51.93).
Earlier in the morning heats, Bovell III, was the 13th fastest overall qualifier in the 100-metre heats in 52.38 for sixth spot in heat three of five. On Thursday, Bovell III won the 50-metre freestyle in a season’s best 22.35 seconds, to beat Javier Noreiga (22.62) and Czerniak (22.79) into second and third spot respectively.
In the semifinal round, Bovell won his heat in 22.71 seconds and in the preliminary heats, Bovell III won in 23.26.

He won thre 50 two days before in an impressive 22.3. Training with the best helps to make you the best. He should win the 50 handily in both CAC and Commonwealth this year.
