South American WC Qualifying Update
« on: December 16, 2007, 02:34:40 AM »
5th placed Venezuela

Close to naming a new coach. Official announcement should come this week. The replacement is likely to be Venezuelan. [They haven't had a foreign coach in six years]

The coach is probably going to be Cesar Farias. He's young (34) but has over 15 years coaching experience - 10 of those in the top flight ... yep, you read that correctly! He has done consistently well at the national level and caught attention in coaching circles outside Venezuela with his team's success at the 2004 edition of the Copa Libertadores. He has qualified twice for the Libertadores. Holds a VEN A- license and has been exposed to top notch European coaching otherwise, but he's about to step onto a bigger stage.

He wasn't first choice. First choice wanted US $35,000 per month and was told to take a hike.

9th placed Peru dealing with some scandal

Four players have been suspended indefinitely for alleged acts of indiscipline. Everything is alleged to have taken place following Peru's draw with Brazil last month.

The players involved are Claudio Pizarro (Chelsea), Jefferson Farfan (PSV Eindhoven), Andres Mendoza (Metalurh Donetsk) and Santiago Acasiete (UD Almeria). Is de usual scene said to be drinking alcohol late into the night/early morning and woman. Two days later Peru lost versus Ecuador 5-1.

Their WC 2010 committee is looking into the situation. Meanwhile the coach (Jose "Chemo" del Solar) keeps his wuk - he was under the microscope given b/c of the situation related to the women and wine scene buh like he handled his stories and dat talk done. All activities are said to have occurred at the team's hotel.

Nuff work to be done in this camp

2d placed Argentina

Diego Simeone confirmed at River Plate as new coach ... this could mean Crespo returning to River and getting very comfortable for the second round with more playing time likely there than in Europe. Remember how solid he looked during theCopa America until he was injured?

What a wild game last night between Brazil and Arg.
Crowd trouble before the game,
Martinez trying to grab a policeman's baton,
game delayed,
glaring misuse/non-use of VAR,
fouls with football in between,
a super goal from Otamendi,
Messi injured,
men slapping, kicking, pushing, diving
unskilled Brazil attack,
Joelinton introduced and sent off soon after,
Endrick senior debut.
That's one of the worst Brazil squads I have seen in a long time.

Jogo Bonito ? I make them out long time. A couple special individuals does not a team make.  The samba is old man football from old man times, according to some youths, not realizing the value of some old things .
Anybody could handle Brazil now, men and women. To much social turmoil. Football -games in general- is a distraction from social issues. Mind you always has been. But when the social issues are political, economic and criminal, the war - the negatives of those issues - infects the distraction, regardless of what form the distractions take. Thus to fix our football, we gotta find a way to fix ourselves. Just a personal opinion . Could be a scratch on a large surface.

In light of the Libertadores events not long ago, all of this is part of the diet.
