Nancoo’s winning Edge continues

Rachael Thompson-King

The Edge ended with a 5-1 record. T&T coach Kelvin Nancoo was showered with praises after leading The Edge to the Under-16 title at the United States Field Hockey Association’s National Hockey Festival (USFHA) held in Phoenix, Arizona, last month. Under the guidance of Nancoo, the New Jersey-based club, played superb hockey to better some 180 teams to become the best team in that age-group in the USA at the renewal of the festival, a four-day tournament held during the Thanksgiving weekend (November 25-28). He is the first Trinidadian to coach a team to major outdoor and indoor hockey titles in the United States, copping his tenth national title in six years. His off-the-field tactics proved to be key in motivating  the team. The Edge hockey girls lost their opening match.

Nancoo, realising that some of the players were not as focused as they should have been, threatened to take away all cellphones to ensure full concentration on the job ahead. The move effected success as the Edge unit reeled off five impressive wins under tough conditions. “I think they knew that the hard work which they put in would bear fruit. Happily, for the Edge Field Hockey Club did it,” said Nancoo. He indicated that his team executed what they had practiced and perfected over the past eight months and that, too, was one of the motivating factors in the team’s great performance. “This group showed maturity, courage and determination to ensure they achieved their ‘Gold’. These young players deserve every accolade that is showered upon them. They had to rise early and yet had their match postponed to 8 pm but that did not matter.

“Despite the extremly cold weather, they showed that they were ready for Phoenix,” said Nancoo. “They were excellent. The attack was great and their defensive play was just as good. I am certain they have demoralised some of their rivals.” Nancoo was particularly pleased with his team’s tactical work. “We had the best defence with Caroline Mc Cabe in goal and Teresa Benvenuti being the stalwart, along with Noelle Villa, Lauren La Duca, Megan Fiske,Maggie Dalena, Annie Turnbull, and Whitney Kowski.” He went on to quote the great Nelson Mandela saying: “The Greatest Glory in living, lies not in never falling but in rising every time we fall’.” “The Edge proved this statement to be a fact as we stumbled and fell but got back to our feet in chase of our desired goal of becoming the Hockeyfest Champions of 2010 and proving to all and sundry that we were the best team at the festival,” added Nancoo.
