LUBBOCK, Texas - Janelle Redhead broke the school record on her way to an individual title in the women's 400 meter dash and teamed up with Sparkle McKnight, Janeil Bellille, and Chante'sean White to also best the mark in the 4x400 meter relay. Redhead anchored the relay to a time of 3 minutes, 40.89 seconds to shatter the mark previously set in 2009 by nearly three seconds.
In the final event of the day, the SPC men's 4x400 meter relay team of Bralon Taplin, Isaiah Gill, Anton Kokorin, and Rondell Bartholomew defeated handily defeated the host Red Raiders when they dipped under the previous school record of 3:07.58 with a performance of 3:07.55.
In the 400 meter dash, Redhead crossed the line with a time of 55.20 seconds and led teammates Shana-Gaye Tracey (56.77), Jura Levy (56.83), and Blake Amoy (57.09) to a 1-3-4-5 finish.
David Westbury blasted the field in the men's 3,000 meter run, turning in a time of 8:51.60, while teammate Isacc Placencia (9:11.56) was the runner-up.
Stephen Emere and Keri Emanuel swept the men's and women's triple jump titles. Emere's leap of 51-05.75 defeated his nearest competitor by nearly 1-foot, while his teammates Anthony May II (50-04.75) and Ronson Small (48-05.25) finished third and fourth.
Emanuel won the women's triple jump by 2 ½ feet with a best jump of 39-01.00.
Texan and Lady Texan head track coach Chris Beene is very excited about what he saw from his team over the past two days.
"We came out and had a very good meet and also stayed very healthy, which is the most important thing," Beene said. "We also got a lot of good work in. With it being cold last week we really needed to get some good work in and we accomplished that."
The SPC track and field teams will return to Texas Tech's athletic training facility next weekend for the Texas Tech Invitational January 21-22.
