T&T draws Mexico, Cuba for U-20 final round.
By Shaun Fuentes (TTFF).

Trinidad and Tobago National Under 20 men’s team will face Mexico and Cuba in their opening group of the Concacaf final round of qualification in Guatemala in April ahead of the 2011 FIFA Under 20 World Cup later this year in Colombia.

This was determined at the draw on Friday which sees defending champion Costa Rica heading  Group C and play Canada and Guadeloupe in the first round while five-time champion Mexico will play T&T and Cuba in Group D.

T&T head coach Zoran Vranes, currently in Fort Lauderdale with the T&T team for a training camp, said he was encouraged even more about T&T’s chances of qualifying for a second successive Under 20 World Cup after guiding the team to the 2009 Finals in Egypt.

“Well it’s not a bad draw at all. We all know Mexico is a giant in the Concacaf but in the last Under 20 qualification we did well against them at the Marvin Lee Stadium so I am not worried about being in the same group as them.

Cuba always produce good teams in this age group but they are not beyond us. I think if we prepare well and with our best team on the field, we can definitely get through this ground and qualify for the quarter finals and then move on to the last four which will put us in Colombia,” Vranes told TTFF Media.

Friday's draw at the InterContinental Hotel in Guatemala City set the matchups for the round-robin play with the United States facing Panama and Suriname in Group B, and host Guatemala taking on Central American rival Honduras and Jamaica in Group A.

The tournament, set for March 28-April 10 in Guatemala City, will determine the region's four qualifiers for the U-20 World Cup in Colombia July 29-August 20.

Like the U-17 championship tournament format, the top two teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals April 5-6 with the winners qualifying for Colombia.

The winner from Group A will play the runner-up from Group B and vice versa in the quarterfinals, and Groups C and D also will play crossover knockout matches.

The semifinals will be played April 8 with the championship match two days later. A full schedule is expected to be released next week.

CONCACAF Under-20 Championship

Group A: Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica
Group B: Untied States, Panama, Suriname
Group C: Canada, Costa Rica, Guadeloupe
Group D: Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, Cuba

T&T U-20s fall 1-0 to Canada

Trinidad and Tobago’s Under 20 footballers suffered a 1-0 loss to Canada's men's U-20 team in a Friendly match in Sunrise, Fort Lauderdale on Thursday.

John Pegg scored the winner 73rd minute after a good play by Russell Teibert. Teibert released Coulton Jackson who broke in down the right side and beat the goalkeeper, but didn't beat the left post. Pegg collected the ball and slammed it into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Both teams are scheduled to face off again on Friday. T&T went into the game after arriving in FL the previous evening.

“It’s not a bad performance by us. Okay we lost but it was important to play the game. We arrived the previous day and we went straight into training and then the match. I think this is a crucial part of our preparations for the tournament in Guatemala and I’m looking forward to the next game,”  T&T head coach Zoran Vranes told TTFF Media.

"It was a good result today," said Canadian national coach Valerio Gazzola. "The players earned the victory."

Joe Public midfielder Marcus Joseph captained the team with regular skipper Sheldon Bateau away on trial with Sporting  Kansas while Joevin Jones and Shahdon Winchester are also on trial with Colorado Rapids.

Vranes made eight substitutions at the half plus a ninth change early in the second half. North American invitees  goalkeepers Greg Ranjitsingh and Stefan Berkely, midfielders Malcolm Manswell and Kester Guichard as well as  Ryan Mcleod were also in the squad.

Joining the squad for training in two weeks will be midfielder Daniel Carr of the Reading FC Academy and Canadian based duo Skylar Thomas, a defender and another Canadian-based defender Rudy James.

TT Starting 11:

Stefan Berkley; Dinelle Lopez, Akil Clarke (Ryan McCleod 55th), Jerron Morris, Weslie John, Kevin Raymond, Cordell Cato, Kenaz Williams, Marcus Joseph (capt), Jerrel Britto, Johan Peltier.

2nd Half from Greg Ranjitsingh, Dinelle Lopez, Weslie John, Malcolm Manswell, Kester Guichard, Alex Knaggs, Joshua Bachan, Isiah Ferguson, Nkosi Dion McCree.

Sad to say(because I live here) but I hope T&T knocks off Canada in both U17 and U20 quarter-finals. A lot of people from other Concacaf countries dislike T&T because of Jackula but Canadian supports are by far the worst. They see a T&T conspiracy for every  tournament and blame us for Canada's lack of success . Funny thing is that the few times that we have played them in qualifiers we have beaten them. They need to stop crying  so much and get on with the game.
