Chronological list of the sub-10 club
Published 8 June 2015 (JonMulkeen.com)Marvin Bracy of USA wins Mens 100m as Adam Gemili of GBR pulls up with injury at 2015 Birmingham Grand Prix. When Adam Gemili clocked 9.97 in the 100m in Birmingham last weekend, there was some confusion over whether or not he became the 100th member of the sub-10-second club.
Some stats sites listed him as the 102nd member, others the 100th, the 101st, the 103rd. You get the picture.
It’s exactly the kind of minutiae that keeps me awake at night, so I had to sort out a chronological list of all sub-10-second performers (based on their first ever such performance) to determine once and for all who is in the club and who is out.
It didn’t take long to see the source of the confusion; there were three debatable performances, none of which belong on the list.
Some sites credit Ben Johnson with a 9.95 clocking from the 1986 Goodwill Games (while still discrediting all of his other times achieved while on drugs), but that run came subsequent to his disqualification period and so shouldn’t be officially recognised.
Mark Lewis-Francis famously went sub-10 in 2001, but his 9.97 came in a race with a faulty wind gauge and so cannot be included in a list alongside other wind-legal performances.
Phil DeRosier clocked 9.97 in 2012, but with his previous season’s best being 10.30, it is generally regarded as a doubtful performance.
What this means is that Gemili DID indeed become the official 100th member of the sub-10-second club last weekend in Birmingham.
Richard Thompson one of five T&T athletes in Sub-10 Club that includes
Keston Beldman, Marc Burns, Darrel Brown and the retired Ato Boldon. So here are all 100 members, in chronological order of their first sub-10 performance. I’ll try to keep this list updated as and when athletes join the sub-10 club.

Data credits: alltime-athletics.com, all-athletics.com, tilastopaja.orgAs can be seen from list above Ato Boldon was the 19th athlete in history to enter the Sub-10 Club when he ran 9.93 in Walnut, USA back in April 1996.
The next T&T athletes to enter the Sub-10 Club were Marc Burns (9.96) and Darrel Brown (9.99) who both ran sub-10 in the same race in Port of Spain back in June 2005 to enter the Sub-10 Club as the 46th and 47th members respectively.
Richard Thompson was the 59th athlete in the world to enter the Sub-10 Club when he ran 9.93 in Auburn, USA back in May 2008.
Keston Bledman was the 78th athlete in the world to enter the Sub-10 Club when he ran 9.93 in Clermont, USA in April 2011.
Since 2011 we have been waiting for some new male T&T sprinters to enter the Sub-10 Club but seem to be going thru a bit of a dry patch so more of our younger male T&T sprinters need to step up.
Our NAAA's need to make some positive moves to address the current dry patch of no new T&T Sub-10 sprinters for the past 4 years.
