Phillip earns Olympic points
By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH Tuesday, November 8 2011

Njisane Phillip pedalled to a creditable eighth place in the finals of the Men’s 200metre Sprint at the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in Astana, Kazakhstan, early Saturday morning.

Phillip’s time has also earned him precious Olympic points.

Riding to victory in the Men’s 200m event was four-time Olympic champion, Chris Hoy of Great Britain. Taking the runner-up position was Denis Dmitriev (Russia), Australian Shane Perkins was third and coming in fourth was German Robert Forsterman.

Phillip’s historic eighth place finish saw him emerge the only Pan American rider to achieve a spot in the top 25 competitors. He also conquered various other top riders such as the world renowned Rene Enders of Germany.

In the qualifiers, the Beacon rider finished with the 11th fastest time among the 53 competing riders. Phillip’s time was 10.118 seconds (1st lap 4.961 2nd lap 5.157).

Manager, Maharaj was pleased with the result but admitted that the international competition was really challenging.

“At this level qualifying is so tough but Njisane did it and was able to pull off the surprise. This was also possible by the amazing and well executed instructions from coach, Jamie Staff,” stated Maharaj.

Phillip’s manager declared that the cyclist was satisfied with his World Cup performance. He explained that this may have been the first time ever, that a local rider has set the competitive bar so high.

“He is happy. Again, making the qualifiers and doing what he did to the German (Enders) is a major accomplishment. This is the first for any Trinidadian,” added Maharaj.

Maharaj explained that the top finishers were more seasoned cyclists than Phillip. If one looks at the age difference of cyclists at the meet, Phillip was one of the youngest finishers overall. All other riders were professionals in their much higher age category. Maharaj credited the German and English riders for their consistency, but admitted that Phillip was a force to be reckoned with.

He explained why the other cyclists had a competitive advantage, “More experience (riders), did not have to sleep at the airport (Phillip).

Lots more strength, muscle mass and again, experience at this level. If Njisane maintains the current programme, he will be on the podium within a year.

Njisane surprised many people and has come a very long way since being under the new programme,” added Maharaj.

Phillip’s manager revealed that all focus will now be directed toward the Cali World Cup in Colombia, two weeks from now. He concluded, “Hopefully all works out with travel and better planning.”

Beacon invests $.2m in three cyclists
Published: Friday, December 23, 2011

Beacon Insurance Company Ltd invested $200,000 in local athletes over the course of 2011 and plans to surpass that amount next year. This was announced during a press conference at Levels Ultra Bar and Lounge on Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook on Wednesday. The beneficiaries included cyclists Njisane Phillip ($77,000), Christopher Sellier ($48,000) and Quincy Alexander ($44,000), who were each on hand to collect a ceremonial cheque. Phillip revealed that because of his frustrations with the T&T Cycling Federation, whose lack of funding for international training and competitions has limited his career, he was considering representing the US at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil.

Meanwhile, Sellier said that making the London Olympics would be his top priority in 2012. “I’m hoping to get enough points at the different World Cups to qualify. The Pan Am Championships will also be in March so if I get some good results there, I’ll get some funding.” Sellier rose to number one in the UCI world rankings in the Kilometre in 2010 but has since dropped out of the top 100 after having a quiet year plagued by injuries and chicken pox. “It’s been a rough season,” he said, “As a cyclist, training in T&T to compete against world class athletes is pretty hard, mission impossible. There’s a reason that countries invest in 250m tracks and it’s time for T&T to consider it.” Sellier also expressed disappointed in the federation for its lack of support. “The T&T Olympic Committee has been extremely helpful but the Federation needs to get its act together. This year, I needed to pay for my own tickets at international events. That’s unacceptable.”

Beacon will also begin providing full international major medical insurance for its athletes, who will receive medical coverage of up to $1m US annually. It was also revealed that teenage tennis star Breanna Stampfli had become Beacon’s latest signing and will collect a $24,000 sponsorship package for 2012. Beacon Marketing Manager Kristian Kong said the company was happy to support the 16-year-old Stampfli, who is currently ranked 594th in the ITF Junior Rankings and has been hailed by tennis pundits as one of the best prospects to ever emerge out of T&T.

T&T’s Njisane Phillip placed seventh overall in the men’s sprint during the UCI Track Cycling World Cup in the Laoshan Velodrome, Beijing, China, yesterday. Out of a field of 56 riders, Phillip clocked the third fastest time of the qualifying round (10.186) and later won his round of 16 match up against Australia’s Taylor Andrew in 10.630.

However, he was eliminated by eventual winner Charlie Concord of France in the quarterfinals after two races. Concord stopped the clock at 10.572 and 10.554 in each race. Phillip was third to cross the line in the 5th-8th place playoff, finishing behind Serges Borisov (10.467) and Venezuelan Hersony Canelon. After three World Cup events, Phillip is currently ranked sixth in the Sprint Standings with 12 points. The fourth and final World Cup event will be held in London from February 17-19.

T&T’s Njisane Phillip set a new national and Pan American record in the Flying 200m at the ProCycling US Grand Prix of Sprinting Meet at the Colorado Springs Velodrome, USA on Saturday night. Phillip clocked 9.775 to finish fourth in the event, a precursor to the Match Sprint, and become “the fastest cyclist in the history of the Western Hemisphere.” He was upstaged by the German trio of  Robert Forstemann (9.652), who set new national and track records, Stefan Nimke (9.670) and Rene Enbers (9.749). In the ensuing Match Sprint 1/8 final, Phillip got the better of German Robert Kantner and was set to face American Kevin Mansker in last night’s quarterfinals at 9:30 pm. The semis and final were to follow a short time later.

Countrymen Justin Roberts and Quincy Alexander also had memorable performances though they did not qualify for the next round. Roberts, who placed 16th overall, surpassed Phillip’s former national Junior Flying 200m mark of 10.434 with 10.429 while  Alexander set a new personal best time of 10.345 to finish 17th. The fourth man on the team, Haseem McLean, was 24th in 10.737. In the Team Sprint, Phillip partnered with Americans Giddeon Massie and TJ Mathieson to finish third in roughly 1:01 while the trio of McLean, Roberts and Alexander came in sixth in 1:03.48.

Phillip returns as US Grand Prix champ

Ace Trinidad and Tobago cyclist Njisane Phillip retained the US Grand Prix of Sprinting match sprint crown on Sunday in Colorado Springs, Colorado, after a blistering performance.

On Saturday night Phillip pedalled to a new national and Pan American record in the Flying 200 metres event, clocking 9.775, the fourth best time overall as three Germans—Robert Forstemann, Stefan Nimke, and Rene Enders in that order—all eclipsed the time. Forstemann's winning time was 9.652.

However, Phillip was the overall winner, repeating his victory of a year ago. The three Germans pulled out of the late rounds of the competition.

To get to the quarter-final, Phillip defeated another German, Robert Kantner, in the second round.

Phillip also teamed up with Americans Gideon Massey and TJ Mathieson to finish third in 1:02.100 in the team sprint event, while the T&T trio of Quincy Alexander, Haseem McLean and Justin Roberts combined for seventh place of nine teams with a 1:03.480 clocking.

During the competition, which started Friday, Roberts broke Phillip's national junior Flying 200 record with his 10.429 time, while Alexander, in his first season as a senior rider, clocked a personal best 10.345 in the same event.

Olympic-bound cyclist Njisane Phillip retained his Match Sprint title on the final night of the ProCycling US Grand Prix of Sprinting Meet at the Colorado Springs Velodrome on Sunday. In an anti-climactic finish, the German and Dutch cyclists pulled out the quarterfinals and semifinals when smoke from the ongoing wildfires in the area swept the venue.

As a result, a three-way final was staged between remaining entrants Phillip and Americans Giddeon Massie and Andy Lakatosh. Phillip won the race while Massie, the American Keirin champion, and Lakatosh grabbed second and third respectively. Meanwhile, Quincy Alexander nabbed fourth place in the Flying Lap in a time of 17.8.

Mountain biking picks up speed in T&T

Mountain biking picks up speed in T&T
Published: Sunday, July 1, 2012

Mountain biking was first included into the Olympic Games in 1996, and for the second consecutive year the Olympic Day celebrations included a mountain bike event organised by Mike’s Bikes for the T&T Olympic Committee. Some 60 mountain bike riders from age six to 60 converged on Samaan Park in Chaguaramas for this event last Saturday. First off was the One Lap Fun Lap, a concept first suggested by the Northern Rangers mountain bike Club, an opportunity for all, regardless of age or ability, to ride the trails as a non-competitive group for the pure love of the sport. Mountain biking has exploded in popularity in recent years, and the need to re-open trails in Chaguaramas that were cut by mountain biking enthusiasts years ago, was the catalyst for the birth of the Northern Rangers mountain bike club.

What began as an informal collection amongst regular mountain bikers to clear these overgrown trails grew into a mailing list of 80 riders with more than 50 riders contributing to the effort. In January 2012, the club was formed with an interim committee of seven that drafted the club’s constitution. An application was made to the T&T Cycling Federation to register the club, and final approval was received in May. The vision of the club is “to develop environmentally sensitive mountain biking in all its forms for all levels of ability in T&T.” One of the main objectives of the club is to facilitate the growth of mountain biking in T&T so that the sport can achieve a fair and transparent ranking system putting the framework in place for forming a national mountain biking team to compete at an international level.

'Unity Race' launched
Tour of Trinidad and Tobago to be biggest in Caribbean

By Garth Wattley
Story Created: Jul 24, 2012 at 11:47 PM ECT

"The hardest event we've ever had," was the way former national cycling champion Gene Samuel described it.

"An opportunity for the country to see itself in motion and to bring cyclists of international renown here to compete," noted Planning and Sustainable Development Minister Dr Bhoe Tewarie.

The two men were describing the Tour of Trinidad and Tobago Unity Race to be staged from August 23 to September 2 to mark the country's 50th year of Independence.

The event was launched yesterday at the Eric Williams Finance Building on Independence Square, Port of Spain. It will involve ten stage races over the two islands and will include riders from North and South America, the United Kingdom, Germany and the Caribbean, in addition to local riders.

Among the visitors, the organisers promised, would be some Tour de France competitors and Edwin Avila from Colombia, the 2011 World Championships points race champion who is expected to fly here from the London Olympic Games.

T&T road ace Emile Abraham will also be returning home for the event.

Each of the stages have been named after top local cyclists of the past, including the late Compton Gonsalves, Leslie King and Fitzroy Hoyte.

The race, the brainchild of Anthony "Bike Doctor" Commissiong, is a collaborative effort which also involves the ministries of Planning and Sport and a host of sponsors.

Winners of each stage will receive cash prizes, while the overall winner will get a Nissan March motor car. The runner-up will receive $15,000 and the third man $10,000. In all, the total prize money for the first 15 overall placings will be $77,500.

In addition, the general public has also been included in the action.

Marketing chairman of the race, Peter Andrews, announced that prior to the first stage there will be a 50 kilometre ride on August 19 for the general public from Arima to Port of Spain and back to Arima.

Minister Tewarie commented: "That event really tries to bring together a thousand riders who really are not professional riders...anybody who wants to ride a bike. That is something I like very much. You know what it does, it brings people together, it clears the road so that people could ride on the road and it brings together all of these people from professional riders to ordinary people, youngsters... It is the spirit of community."

He also gave kudos to the Bike Doctor's perseverance in getting the race going.

"Mr Commissiong," he said, "is a good example of the fact that it really doesn't matter how many times you fall, it's how many times you get up."

For his part, Commissiong, thanked the Minister and his Ministry for their support, while president of the Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation, Rowena Williams, hoped the race would grow "in the next few years" and become an event sanctioned by the governing body for the sport, UCI, like the annual Tour of Tobago.

Also present and offering his support was T&T racing icon Roger Gibbon.

Car for winner of unity cycling race

History was created in the local cycling arena yesterday when it was announced that more than $77,000 will be given out in prizes in an upcoming Independence anniversary celebration cycling competition. That does not include the first prize, a Nissan March car, in the ten-stage Unity Race, starting from August 23, in which international cyclists will take part.

The news, welcomed by local cycling enthusiasts, was announced at the launch of the race at the Ministry of Planning, Eric Williams Financial Complex, Port-of-Spain, yesterday. “This is one of the biggest things to happen in the history of cycling in T&T and the Caribbean,” race chairman, Peter Andrew, said.

He added:  “The prize money is unmatched, so far. Never was a motor vehicle given as a first prize in any competition.” When the T&T Guardian asked Planning Minister Dr Bhoe Tewarie if the Government was justified in spending so much money on Independence celebrations when some people were lacking basic needs, he said there were a lot of social programmes in place.

The Government, he said, was doing a lot to bring divestment to the economy. He added: “You can’t have a 50th anniversary celebration and not nourish the spirit of nationalism. “It is citizens’ organisations that are leading this thing and we are facilitating the process. People have brought ideas to us.” The idea for the Unity Race was the brainchild of Anthony Commissiong, known as “Bike Doctor”, and the proposal was presented to the Government.

Asked how much soca artiste, Machel Montano, was being paid by the Government to sing the Independence song, Going for Gold, Tewarie said: “It is not a question of how much he was paid. “We saw it as an investment to develop the capabilities of our artistes. The returns from this investment will go towards a fund to support the music industry.”

Asked if Montano was singled out by the Government, Tewarie said he was. He added: “Yes, he was singled out because he singled himself out by coming to us with his proposal. We sat down and listened. Many of the ideas were his. “We were willing to facilitate him because we saw the importance of working with people who would connect people in the world to our music.

“I really believe if you free the spirit of the people through their capacity to create and use their God-given talents it will make a world of difference.” Asked if other artistes came forward with proposals, Tewarie said they came after Cabinet had agreed on Montano’s proposal. Many of those proposals were also “pie in the sky” with the artistes wanting too much for too little, he added.

A competition also is planned for Tobago. A fun race, in which 1,000 people are targeted, is being planned for one week before the event. Former Olympic cyclist, Roger Gibbon, said there was such a competition several years ago but it stopped. Gene Samuel, another former top T&T cyclist, said in his day cyclists never had the support of the Government. He said Tewarie’s involvement started the ball rolling once again.

Praise for Phillip, pleas for more help
By Garth Wattley
Story Created: Aug 13, 2012 at 10:59 PM ECT

Two former national cycling champions want to see Njisane Phillip's efforts at the Olympics encourage greater investment in the development of the sport.

Both Gene "Geronimo" Samuel, who before Phillip had been the closest T&T rider to an Olympic medal, with fourth spot in the kilometre time trial at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, and Michael Phillips, CAC kilo medallist and former Cycling Federation president, hold this view.

In London last week, Phillip equalled Samuel's fourth placing, but this time in the match sprint, when he was beaten for the bronze medal by Shane Perkins of Australia, having earlier lost out in straight rides to eventual gold medallist Jason Kenny of Great Britain in the semi-finals.

Njisane also placed in the top eight in the keirin event, winning the race for spots 7-12.

Both men praised those efforts, even Phillip's getting into the Olympic competition itself.

"A top eight finish is a fantastic performance," said Samuel, who also stated: "I expected him to have a very good chance at a top four finish.

"We know what Njisane can do. I've seen him come from strength to strength. We admire his discipline and focus."

Phillips described 20-year-old Nijsane's effort as "extremely encouraging".

He noted: "He is only one of three people from Western Hemipshere that would have qualified for the sprint events.

"I think, to me, the top eight was very predictable. Top four was very accomplishable. I thought a bronze medal (was possible) had he not made any errors. Unfortunately the lack of experience at that level would have got the better of him in that bronze ride-off."

For Samuel, however, Phillip, who was thought to have a better chance for medals in the 2016 Olympiad in Rio, "was only beaten by faster men on the day in the Olympics. He did everything he could have done and tried (tactically). They were just a bit faster than him, I have no doubt he will be as fast as them in four years."

Whereas javelin gold medallist Keshorn Walcott trains and is coached at home by his Cuban coach, Phillip was prepared for his Olympic effort by former British Olympic medallist Jaime Staff, who is currently in charge of the United States cyclists.

Samuel said: What we achieved as a (T&T) team was so mind-blowing. We are blessed in the Caribbean, we just need the support."

In this regard, he would like to see a cycling velodrome built in the Port of Spain region, in addition to the track that is earmarked for Couva. Phillips agreed.

And noting that Walcott was a product of a talent identification drive by the National Association of Athletics Administrations (NAAA), the ex-Federation president said: "It is not a matter of Njisane wanting to win a medal. It is a matter of whether or not the country wants to win Olympic medals in the sport of cycling...I hope it (Phillip's effort) is not success in isolation. I hope it brings a level of motivation for younger riders."

The former cyclist also said he hoped Phillip's fourth place encouraged a different approach to funding.

"We still have a very reactive view of dealing with our elite athletes," he said.

"They get to a certain level on their own (before getting funding), but that creates a time lag in their development. Elite athlete funding has helped T&T sport...(but) we have to go to elite athlete infrastructure (now)."

Explaining, he said money that now goes to athletes to prepare for competition should be used by the authorities themselves to prepare and develop them.

"Your reward will be separate and apart from the cost of your training expenses," said Phillips.

Williams expecting good TT Tour
Tuesday, August 21 2012

ROWENA WILLIAMS, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Cycling Federation (TTCF), was pleased with the Jubilee Tribute Ride, which signalled the start of the Tour of Trinidad and Tobago Independence Cycle Classic.

The Jubilee Ride took place yesterday morning, from the Arima Velodrome to the Twin Towers in Port of Spain, and then back to the Arima Velodrome.

Questioned about the Jubilee Ride, Williams replied,“things (were) very good. We had 180 riders turning out, which was great for the event, and we look forward to greater support, people coming out and supporting the event starting Thursday morning, for the time trial which starts at the San Fernando Hill.

“We know that we have a lot of participation and we have a lot of the foreign cyclists looking forward to it, so we know the event will be very successful,” she continued.

A number of youngsters featured in the Jubilee Ride, and the TTCF head noted, “the intentions were to get people aware of what cycling is about.

“(Yesterday) was not a race so it was very good. They all came out. Everybody came together, the support services (were) very good.”

There may be the possibility that the Tour of Trinidad and Tobago can become an annual event.

“We would like to, because it was an event that was called the Yoplait Tour of Trinidad. And it’s something that we’ll like to revive as we go forward. So we’ll see how things turn out over the next few weeks and then we’ll move on.”

Jamaican takes Tour Time Trial
By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH Friday, August 24 2012

Foreign-based local cyclist, Emile Abraham, was given a stern competitive warning from Jamaica’s Marloe Rodman powered to victory in the first 1km Time Trial event on the opening day of the inaugural Tour of Trinidad and Tobago Independence Classic, which pedalled off at the scenic base of the San Fernando Hill yesterday. Rodman completed the challenging course in a time of 1:52.30 while the Rossetti Devo (Abraham) rider claimed runner-up position in 1:58.11. Coming in third was Maarten de Jonge (CCN) in 1:58.25 while Jamie Ramirez (Petrotrin) and Ben Simmons (Primal Europe) rounded off the top-five finishers respectively. Abraham’s club-mates, Phil Gaimon (2:02.15), Jean Michael Lachance (2:07.66) and Gevan Samuel (son of Gene “Geronimo” Samuel) finished in seventh, 16th and 20th respectively.

Last night, the second stage of the Tour (Noel Luces Stage) was scheduled to ride off from the Rienzi-Kirton Highway, San Fernando, but up to press time results were not yet available. This circuit is an approximate one hour ride. Today will see Stage Three (Leslie King Stage) of the course pedal off at the Arima Velodrome from 8pm. The course is expected to be flat and fast.

A host of local, regional and international riders are currently taking part in this inaugural race. Riders have flown in from the US, Canada, Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Colombia, Czech Republic, Uruguay, Barbados, Jamaica and Guyana to be a part of this competitive experience.

This event is also being held to commemorate this nation’s 50th Anniversary of Independence.

By Donstan Bonn
Story Created: Aug 23, 2012 at 11:04 PM ECT

Trinidad-based Jamaican Marloe Rodman struck a blow for regional riders when he won the first stage of the inaugural Tour of Trinidad and Tobago at San Fernando Hill, San Fernando, yesterday.

Riding for Rafmon Mecalfab, Rodman completed the George Terry Stage one-kilometre hill time trial in one minute, 52.30 seconds, in conditions made damp by persistent early morning showers.

Capturing second in the race against the clock was United States-based T&T cyclist Emile Abraham, riding for Rosetti Devo.

Abraham stopped the clock at 1:58.11, while Maarten de Jonge gave Germany's Team CCN the first of their two top ten finishes when he sealed third spot in 1:58.25.

Venezuela's Andres Camilo Ramirez and Darren Matthews of Barbados also had creditable performances in the 70-strong field.

Ramirez finished sixth overall in 2:01.77 to cop first place in the under-23 category and claim the white jersey as the leading rider in his category while Matthews, another U-23 rider, finished ninth overall in 2:03.59, positioning himself to challenge Ramirez for top honours.

National time trial champion Jovian Gomez did not fare as well as expected, finishing down the field, but Gevan Samuel, fourth in the U-23 category, restored some national pride by claiming the red, white and black jersey for the first home-based rider to finish.

Samuel completed the trip in 2:12.55 to be 20th overall.

Rodman went into last night's second stage—the Noel Luces Stage—wearing the yellow jersey as the Tour's overall leader.

Stage 1 (George Terry Stage) results:

1. Marloe Rodman (Rafmon Mecalfab) – 1:52.30
2. Emile Abraham (Rosetti Devo) – 1:58.11
3. Maarten de Jonge (Team CCN) – 1:58.25
4. Jaime Ramirez (Team Petrotrin) – 2:00.13
5. Ben Simmons (Primal Europe) – 2:00.73
6. Andres Ramirez (Cycling Team Krieger) – 2:01.77
7. Phil Gaimon (Rosetti Devo) – 2:02.15
8. John Ebsen (Team CCN) – 2:02.89
9. Darren Matthews (Team Cocos) – 2:03.59
10. Raphael Merane (Team Foundation)–2:03.60

Tough day for 'Golden Girls'
Story Created: Aug 23, 2012 at 11:04 PM ECT

Trinidad and Tobago's cyclists found it tough going on the ILT Velodrome Track yesterday, despite a number of personal bests on Day Two of the 2012 World Junior Track Championships in Invercargill, New Zealand.

Aziza Browne, who teamed up with cousin Jodi Goodridge for fifth place in the team sprint on opening day Wednesday, clocked 13.244 seconds in the Flying 200 metres event, a new personal best for the rider by 0.357 seconds, but only good enough for 17th spot. Goodridge also rode in that event and was one place ahead of her teammate in 16th, with a time of 13.101 seconds.

The duo were stopped in the next round, with Browne losing out to Martha Bayona of Colombia, while hometown favourite, the hosts' Victoria Steel, brought an end to Goodridge's run.

The duo, T&T's Pan American Junior Championship-winning "Golden Girls", will have a rest day today, before they pedal into action again tomorrow in the keirin.

Also in action for T&T yesterday was Justin Roberts, who placed 16th of 26 entrants in the kilometre time trial.

Roberts shaved 2.5 seconds off his previous personal best to clock 1:07.778. Australian Zacary Shaw took gold in 1:02.303.

Roberts was expected to return to the track last night (8.30 p.m. T&T time) for the junior men's sprint competition.

His teammates, Kwesi Browne and national junior sprint champ Samuel Mahabir, will both challenge the track in the Flying 200m event, before Roberts gets into action.

Phillip says training in Germany ‘difficult’
By JONATHAN RAMNANANSINGH Thursday, June 27 2013

Trinidad and Tobago’s Olympic cyclist, Njisane Phillip and budding national sprinter Kwesi Browne, began their special training programme at the Berlin Velodrom, Germany, on Monday
.

Training under the expert tutelage of multiple European champion, Emanuel Raasch, the local duo has also teamed up with former International Cycling Union (UCI) number one Robert Forstemann (Germany) and two other world renowned riders.

After a lengthy but successful trip from Pennsylvania, USA, on Saturday, both riders arrived in Berlin on Sunday. Having powered to gold in his 2013 international debut Men’s Sprint event at the UCI Festival of Speed on Friday, Phillip and fifth placed Browne, pedalled onto the Berlin Velodrom track for this first time on Monday.

Speaking to Phillip yesterday, he revealed that the German training regime is a bit different, as compared to his usual cycling workouts. However, he expressed confidence in himself and Browne, that they would be able to successfully derive the required benefits from this unique programme.

“The training has been really hard so far with the jet lag and all,” he said. “Training is completely different from what I was doing, it’s much more work load. We have two other cyclists training with us. They are great training partners to get to the next level, so we are looking forward to the next couple months in Germany,” he explained.

Both riders will get their first taste of European competition this weekend in Cottbus, Germany. They are expected to contest the Sprint and Keirin events. After this meet, the local duo will fly en route to Colorado, USA, where they will take part in the 2013 US Grand Prix of Sprinting at the Colorado Springs Velodrome Memorial Park.

Phillip is the current reigning sprint champion two years in a row and will be hoping to secure the three-peat. Last year, the national cyclist set a new track record of 9.775s in Flying 200m, which was later shattered by German opposition.

Phillip also revealed that after his stint in the US, he and Browne will return to Europe and prepare themselves for some major Grand Prix events. Speaking on Browne’s progress in the US and now in Germany, the Olympic sprint fourth place added, “He’s like one of my little brothers. He is doing well, showing a lot of heart and dedication lots of talent. He is racing well but needs more time to develop his strength and power. However, he is in good hands now.”

Also recording some impressive performances over the weekend was Phillip’s local training partner, Varun Maharaj. Even though he produced two fifth place finishes in separate endurance events, Maharaj stood up against some of the world’s top criterium riders. Having been training with Phillip during his ten-month post-Olympic stay in TT, Maharaj has been putting in the hours and is now reaping the benefits.

On Maharaj’s recent performances, Phillip indicated, “I’m really happy to see him doing really well. He is also like my brother so I am very happy with his progress, really nice to see him living up to what he always wanted to do.”

Phillip and Browne will return to their strict training schedule in Berlin, Germany, today.

Njisane Phillip won the UCI Fastest Man on Wheels Grand Prix Men’s Sprint event in Trexlertown, Pennsylvania, USA on Friday night after finishing fourth in the Pro Men UCI sprint qualifying.

Phillip also entered the Pro Men keirin event but had to settle for a second place finish.

He was second behind Espinoza in heat three before finishing second to Esterhuizen in the final. Espinoza was sixth in the keirin final.

Track record for Phillip in Bromont Challenge
T&T Express Reports
Story Created: Sep 6, 2013 at 10:36 PM ECT

The weather was windy and cold, but Njisane Phillip warmed up the National Cycling Centre track in Bromont, Canada by setting a new Flying 200m mark for the venue yesterday, the second day of the Bromont International Challenge.

Phillip clocked 10.374 seconds in tough conditions for the top qualifying spot, which rewarded him with a bye into the quarter-finals of the match sprint that were set to pedal off late yesterday.

Keron Bramble, making his debut in international competition, enjoyed an 11.713 clocking, which made him the ninth fastest on the day that put him into the second round, but he was edged out by Canadian Hugo Barette.

Into the repechage round he went for a chance to qualify for the quarters, but Bramble was again beaten by Geoffrey Fryer of the USA.

T&T’s other cyclist at the Challenge, Varun Maharajh, could not improve on his overnight overall fifth placing after five of six events in the omnium.

On Thursday, Maharajh’s total of 14 points left him nine adrift of first-day leader Remi Pelletier-Roy (five points) of Canada.

And yesterday, Maharajh clocked 5:00.082 in the four-kilometre individual pursuit, the fourth fastest time, but was still fifth with the kilometre time trial still outstanding last night.
