I can understand this comment. Whatever natural ability you are born with, it can only be enhanced by continual practice. Playing with other kids in the streets develops certain skills, but can also develop bad habits. Youth football coaches are usually only concerned with results, not development. By spending countless hours with a parent or adult just practicing passing, ball control, shooting. heading gives the player a much more assured skill base. And guess what...it also tightens the bond between father and son.

When my son was signed by Gillingham at 5 years old, it was because of his technical ability compared to others his age. Unfortunately, he never had a real gift that would take him further. From the moment he walked, we played football. He loved it and we had great times together. So, he never made it as a player, but we're real close...and thats a far greater reward.

Youth development has to start at age 5. It shouldn't be work...it should be fun. Those with a natural ability will be keen to develop their skills. It has to start with the parents.

Where yuh son, is he still at Gillingham ?

Nah...he peaked at 7 lol Once the other kids grew taller and stronger he just kept getting knocked off the ball! He still plays in sunday league and stuff. His claim to fame is replacing Stern John in a fete match earlier in the year!

W Connection youngster Woo Ling invited back to Spurs.
W Connection Press Release.

Fifteen year old W Connection Senior team player Matthew Woo Ling has been invited back for a second look by Tottenham Hotspur’s Academy for an extensive ten day final assessment trial.

In December 2011, the player spent five days at the Academy just long enough to peak their interests so much that they have footed all his travel and accommodation expenses surrounding the upcoming trip.

This round of trial could produce long term benefits for the player.

As you may recall, this young midfielder made his senior team Pro League debut at the beginning of the 2011/2012 season and has been a consistent member of W Connection’s Senior team 18 man roster for games.

Recent video highlights posted on YouTube of Matthew’s performances for W Connection’s Senior Reserves versus other Pro League teams have sparked a huge amount of interest in his talent and has gotten the attention of two Serie A teams in Italy who have expressed serious interest in having him over.

Matthew will travel to the Tottenham Hotspur’s Academy on the 17th of March where he will train till the 26th of March.

Lovely news !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Surprisingly he never played for any of the T&T youth teams, now if he signs for Spurs the TTFF might finally call him up.

Typical.

Not sure how this works but wouldn't the player need to have a european passport to even be accepted into the academy?

But wasn't Jones accepted into Southampton academy ?

And - even if they have to loan him out to a club in another European country that is affiliated with Spurs ?

I am sure there are loop holes....  ;)

I'm pretty sure all of those loop holes have been plugged now. I notice the academies hardly have any players originating from outside Europe. I think it may have to do with European labour laws. Really not to sure. Either way I think it's highly impossible for a child to be accepted into a european academy without a european passport/ visa.
Also wasn't Kenwyne Jones signed as a full professional? He signed for Southampton at the age of 20 not so?

Nah, they come on a sort of academic visa.  They are theoretically in a school, and they have to go to school while perfecting their trade.  Remember, they can't sign pro contract in UK until they are 17.  By that time, the player may already be recognised as "home grown", thus waiving the foreign player requirements.

I got this off the Fa website.

Article 19 Protection of Minors

1.  International transfers of players are only permitted if the player
is over the age of 18.
2.  The following three exceptions to this rule apply:
a) The player’s parents move to the country in which the New Club
is located for reasons not linked to football
; or

b) The transfer takes place within the territory of the European
Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) and the player is
aged between 16 and 18. In this case, the New Club must fulfil
the following minimum obligations:
i. It shall provide the player with an adequate football education
and/or training in line with the highest national standards.
ii. It shall guarantee the player an academic and/or school
and/or vocational education and/or training, in addition
to his football education and/or training, which will allow
the player to pursue a career other than football should he
cease playing professional football.
iii. It shall make all necessary arrangements to ensure that the
player is looked after in the best possible way (optimum living
standards with a guest family or in club accommodation,
appointment of a mentor at the club etc.).
iv. It shall, on registration of such a player, provide the relevant
Association with proof that it is complying with the
aforementioned obligations; or

c) The player lives no further than 50km from a national border,
and the club for which the player wishes to be registered in the
neighbouring Association is also within 50km of that border.
The maximum distance between the player’s domicile and the
club’s quarters shall be 100km. In such cases, the player must
continue to live at home and the two Associations concerned
must give their explicit consent.

Boy some of the highlights I see of this youth man on Youtube last night was ridiculous. Making big men in Pro League Reserve matches look like little boys. He is a true talent and hopefully this exposure away helps him develop to the potential talent that he really is.
