T&T women lose to Cuba in Centro

T&T women’s basketball team suffered a huge 88-36 loss to Cuba in the opening match of the FIBA Americas Centrobasket Championships which jumped off in Morovis, Puerto Rico, yesterday. It was a one-sided affair from the jump with the Cubans leading throughout, 25-4 in the first quarter, 43-16 at the half and 67-28 in the third. Leading T&T in scoring was point guard Rhea Codio, who connected a match-high 13 points. Unfortunately, she led in turnovers five in T&T’s 20 compared to nine from Cuba. T&T was topped in every faucet of the game, getting punished through second chance points with Cuba getting 23 to T&T’s four and being totally outscored off of fast breaks, 24-0.

Cuba fielded most of its players that topped the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Championships held in Nassau, Bahamas, last year. Islen Carbonell Veranes, Yamara Amargo Delgado Leidys Oquendo Valdes each scored 12 points with Oyanaisy Gelis Gonzalez and Taimy Fernandez Martinez, netting 11 and 10, respectively. When the teams last met in the CBC tournament, T&T went under by a similarly huge margin, 80-32. However, the CBC silver medalists will look to bounce back today when they meet US Virgin Islands (USVI) in its second group B match. T&T, which is being coached by Puerto Rican Ivan Flores, topped USVI at last year’s CBC event, 76-68. Tomorrow T&T faces off against Dominican Republic, another team they beat at CBC last year, 82-76. The local women will have to beat these two teams if they are to advance out of the qualifying round. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday and the final bounces off the next day. The top four teams qualify for the 2013 FIBA-Americas Championship (World Qualifier).
