CAC Junior Champs start today

The Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Track and Field Championships will be staged this weekend, in San Salvador, El Salvador. The meet starts today and ends on Sunday.
Trinidad and Tobago will be represented by 40 athletes, including three gold medallists from the 2010 CAC Junior Championships, in Dominican Republic.
Keshorn Walcott will defend his boys' under-20 javelin title. The 2010 boys' under-17 shot put gold medallist, Hezekiel Romeo, will bid for precious metal in the boys' under-20 shot put. And Kernesha Spann, winner of the girls' under-17 300m hurdles in Dominican Republic, chases the girls' under-20 400/400 hurdles double.
T&T earned 27 medals in 2010—12 gold, six silver and nine bronze.
The T&T team in El Salvador also includes Machel Cedenio. Last Saturday, Cedenio finished fifth in the NAAA Sagicor/NGC National Open Track and Field Championship men's 400m final in a personal best 46.02 seconds. The clocking moved the 17-year-old T&T athlete into tenth spot on the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) 2012 world junior (under-20) performance list.
Cedenio is first on the 2012 world youth (under-18) list and is the favourite for boys' under-18 gold in El Salvador.
Walcott is expected to have no problems retaining his javelin title. The Toco field athlete is at the top of the world junior list at 80.11 metres. That throw is the Pan American junior record.

Carifta champions Kenejah Williams and Mark London will lead T&T into battle on the opening morning of action of the 2012 Central American and Caribbean Junior Track and Field Championships, which get Underway in San Salvador, El Salvador today. Williams (Tobago Falcons) and Shervonne Worrell (Zenith) will vie for top honours in the Boys Under 18 shot put finals set for 8 am today (10 am local time). The duo will fancy their chances of winning the country’s first medals of the three day meet as they are ranked third and fourthrespectively in the event. Williams is the reigning Carifta Boys Under 17 Shot Put champion while Worrell will be aiming to improve on his sixth place finish at the 2010 edition of the meet in the Dominican Republic. London (Zenith) is listed to line up in the semifinals of the Boys Under 20 800m. The Carifta champion is expected to advance to the finals later today and is ranked at number seven following his world junior qualifying time of 1:50.54 at the Sagicor/NGC Open Championships last Sunday.
Nicholas Landeau is slated to compete in the Boys Under 18 800m semis and is looking to advance to the finals also on later today. Ayana Glasgow (Toco TAFAC) and Meriah Freeman (D’Abadie Progressive) will be the first locals in action when they enter the 100m Hurdles, the first of seven events in the Girls Under 18 Heptathlon. The High Jump will also be contested this morning while the Shot Put and 200m will be completed this afternoon in the two day multi-event discipline. Glasgow’s Toco clubmate Kechelle Douglas will run in the 100m Hurdles of the Girls Under 20 Heptathlon events. Douglas will also contest the High Jump, Shot Put and 200m events. Aaliyah Telesford (Pt. Fortin New Jets) and Zakiya Denoon (Zenith) will be this country’s entrants in the Girls Under 18 100m semis. Telesford is the second quickest in the field (11.70) while Denoon is at number seven (11.95). In the Boys Under 18 semis, Carifta Boys Under 17 200m champion Jonathan Farinha (Abilene Wildcats) and Nicholas Douglas (Zenith) are among the starters.
Farinha is rated at number four (10.50) and Douglas ninth (10.69). Jonathan Holder and Ashron Sobers (Zenith) will fly the national colours in the Boys Under 20 class. Holder (10.47) is ranked at fifth with Sobers (10.51) at seventh. Lisa Wickham (Concorde) is expected to be among the starters of the Girls Under 20 division. The finals will be run off later today. Hezekiel Romeo (Memphis) will contend for the top spot in the Boys Under 20 Shot Put finals. The 2011 World youth finalist will be hoping to match his gold medal performance two years ago and is the third best competitor on the start list. The Memphis duo of Reubin Walters and Brandon Benjamin have been named to contest the 400m Hurdles semis. Walters will run the Boys Under 18 event and Benjamin in the Under 20 category while Kernesha Spann (Neon Trackers) will be aiming to take the Girls Under 20 400m Hurdles after her success in the Girls Under 17 300m Hurdles event in 2010. The finals will run off later in the day.
The first athlete in action in the afternoon session is expected to be Andwuelle Wright (Signal Hill Secondary). The Carifta Boys Under 17 gold medallist is listed in the Boys Under 18 long jump and could be joined by multi-event athlete Kevin Roberts (Pt Fortin New Jets). Wright has the fourth furthest jump of all the entrants with Roberts just ahead in third. Worell and Williams will be back in action in the Boys Under 18 Discus and will be hoping to improve on their fourth and sixth places finishes respectively in the 2010 Boys Under 17 finals. Atiba Wright (UWI Sixth-Form) will bid for gold in the Boys Under 20 Long Jump. For this year’s Championships, the younger age group has been changed from Under 17 to Under 18 while the Under 20 category has been maintained. Also each country will be allowed to enter three athletes in the multi-events. At the 2010 edition, T&T finished third on the medal standings with 27 (12 gold, six silver and nine bronze). The three day meet ends on Sunday.

Romeo, Worrell earn opening-day CAC Junior medals

Hezekiel Romeo and Shervonne Worrell earned precious metal for Trinidad and Tobago on the opening day of the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Track and Field Championships, in San Salvador, El Salvador, yesterday.
Romeo threw the iron ball 18.59 metres to pick up silver in the boys' under-20 shot put. Jamaica's Ashinia Miller struck gold with a Championship record throw of 19.70m, while bronze went to Barbadian Tristan Whitehall (16.87m).
Worrell claimed bronze in the boys' under-18 shot put with a 17.04m throw, beating his T&T teammate Kenejah Williams (16.88m) into fourth spot. Mexico's Mario Flores produced an 18.92m effort, a new Championship record, to grab gold, ahead of Jamaican Demar Gayle (17.64m).
Worrell and Williams were back in action late yesterday in the boys' under-18 discus.
Also on show in the second session were Ashron Sobers, Zakiya Denoon and Lisa Wickham. They competed in 100 metres finals.
In the qualifying round of the boys' under-20 100m, Sobers finished fourth in heat two in 10.60 seconds to advance to the final as a "fastest loser". Another T&T sprinter, Jonathan Holder, was disqualified in heat one.
Denoon was fourth in the second girls' under-18 100m heat in 12.29 seconds to progress as a "fastest loser". Her teammate, Aaliyah Telesford, was disqualified in heat one for a false start.
Wickham is expected to face the starter in the girls' under-20 100m final. There was no qualifying round in this event.
And in the boys' under-18 100m, Nicholas Douglas copped fourth spot in heat one in 10.83 seconds and did not qualify for the championship race.
Mark London was among the starters in the boys' under-20 800m final, late yesterday. He advanced as a "fastest loser" after finishing fourth in heat two in one minute, 53.11 seconds. Nicholas Landeau was a non-finisher in heat two in the boys' under-18 800m.
Reubin Walters progressed to yesterday's boys' under-18 400m hurdles final as the fastest qualifier, after finishing first in heat two in 53.29 seconds.
Brandon Benjamin was third in heat one in the qualifying round of the boys' under-20 one-lap hurdles in 52.91 seconds, advancing to the final automatically.
Also in action late yesterday were Kernesha Spann (girls'under-20 400m hurdles final), Atiba Wright (boys' under-20 long jump), and Andwuelle Wright (boys' under-18 long jump).

Kernesha Spann claimed another Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Track and Field Championship gold medal, on the opening day of the 2012 edition of the meet, in San Salvador, El Salvador, late on Friday.
The Trinidad and Tobago athlete captured the girls' under-20 400 metres hurdles title in 59.09 seconds to add to the under-17 300m hurdles crown she had earned in 2010.
Kenejah Williams and Andwuelle Wright also struck gold for T&T on Friday. Williams topped the boys' under-18 discus field with a Championship record throw of 50.58 metres. His teammate, shot put bronze medallist Shervonne Worrell, picked up silver in the discus with a 47.95m effort. Wright produced a big 7.07m leap to claim top honours in the boys' under-18 long jump.
Reubin Walters seized silver in the boys' under-18 400m hurdles, the T&T athlete getting home in 52.45 seconds. Jamaica's Okeen Williams clocked a Championship record 51.68 to grab gold.
In a close finish for third in the boys' under-20 one-lap hurdles, T&T's Brandon Benjamin got the edge on Puerto Rican Ramfis Vega, and was awarded the bronze medal. Both athletes were credited with the same time, 51.73 seconds. However, on closer examination of the photo finish, Benjamin was adjudged to have beaten Vega by eight-thousandths of a second.
Jamaicans Jarvarn Gallimore (50.83) and Shavon Barnes (51.05) copped the top two spots.
In the boys' under-20 800m, T&T's Mark London bagged bronze in one minute, 50.98 seconds.
Puerto Rico's Wesley Vasquez was in a race of his own, getting home in a very impressive 1:46.89, a new Championship record, to secure gold. Barbadian Anthonio Mascoll finished a distant second in 1:50.00.
T&T sprinter Lisa Wickham was fourth in the girls' under-20 100m final in 12.04 seconds. Ashron Sobers clocked 10.74 to finish fifth in the boys' under-20 100m championship race. Atiba Wright was fifth in the boys' under-20 long jump with a 6.98m effort. And Zakiya Denoon got to the line in 12.44 to cop sixth spot in the girls' under-18 century final.
During yesterday's first session, Akidah Briggs secured bronze in the girls' under-18 javelin with a 36.85m throw, taking the T&T medal tally to ten halfway through the meet. Ahead of yesterday's late session, T&T had three gold medals, three silver, and four bronze.
Another T&T athlete, Chuntal Mohan, threw 36.48m for fourth spot in the girls' under-18 javelin. Dominican Republic's Yulissa De La Rosa won with a Championship record throw of 37.56m.
London finished fourth in the boys' under-20 1500m in 4:00.48. And in the boys' under-18 1500m, Nicholas Landeau (4:10.17) and Jevon Joseph (4:13.03) were fourth and sixth, respectively.
The 200m and 4x100m titles were decided late yesterday.

Andwuelle Wright, Kenejah Williams and Kernesha Spann struck gold for T&T on the first day of the 2012 Central American and Caribbean Junior Track and Field Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador on Friday. Wright was the first local athlete to climb to the top of the rostrum when he secured the boy’s Under-18 long jump title with a personal best leap of 7.07m. The 14-year-old Signal Hill Secondary student was the youngest in the field and outclassed his older competitors to add the CAC crown to the Carifta gold he won in Bermuda in April. Wright got his winning jump on his fifth attempt. Bahamian pair of Laquan Nairn and Trae Carey took silver and bronze, respectively, both with distances of 6.89m. Williams (Tobago Falcons/Scarborough Sec) led a T&T 1-2 finish in the boy’s Under-18 discus. The Carifta boy’s Under-17 gold medalist won with a throw of 50.58, a personal best and championship record with Zenith and Bishops athlete Shervorne Worrell in second (47.95). The medal was Worrell’s second after he finished third in the boy’s Under-18 shot put earlier in the day (17.04). Williams was fourth in the shot put (16.88). Spann won the girl’s Under-20 400m hurdles in 59.09. The Neon Trackers/St Francois Girls runner beat out Bahamians Devinn Cartwright (59.44) and Kryshell Rolle (1:00.24) as the top three dipped under the World Junior standard of 1:00.75.
Hezekiel Romeo, Ruebin Walters, Mark London, Akidah Briggs all won medals also. Romeo (Memphis/St Anthony) was runner-up in the boy’s Under-20 shot put with a personal best throw of 18.59m. Romeo’s Memphis clubmate Walters (Mucurapo East Sec) sped to the silver in the boy’s Under-18 400m hurdles with a personal best of 52.45. In the boy’s Under-20 400m hurdles another Memphis athlete, Benjamin, was beaten into third. The St Augustine Secondary student clocked a new personal best of 51.73, improving his previous best by 0.03 seconds. Carifta champion Mark London finished third in the boy’s Under-20 800m in a world junior qualifying time of 1:50.98. The Zenith/Bishops student was just off his personal best of 1:50.54 achieved at last week’s Sagicor/NGC National Open Championships. Yesterday, London missed out on a second medal taking fourth spot in the boy’s Under-20 1500m in 4:00.48. Akidah Briggs (Toco TAFAC/Toco Sec) secured T&T’s tenth medal, a bronze in the girl’s Under-18 javelin.
Briggs got the iron spear out to 36.85 with compatriot Chuntal Mohan (Penal) finishing fourth 36.48m. T&T’s medal tally at the end of yesterday’s morning session was three gold, three silver and four bronze. On Friday night, Zakiya Denoon (Zenith/Speyside High) sixth in the girl’s Under-18 100m finals (12.44) while her Zenith colleague Ashron Sobers (Signal Hill Sec) was fifth in 10.74 in the boy’s Under-20 finals. Aliyah Telesford, Kayelle Clarke, Jonathan Farinha, Asa Guevara and Jereem Richards booked spot in the finals of the 200m events which were contested late yesterday. In the semifinals, Telesford (Pt Fortin New Jets/Holy Faith Convent) rebounded from a disqualification in the girl’s Under-18 100m semifinals, to advance to the 200m finals finishing fourth in 24.71, crossing the line third in heat two. Clarke of Petrotrin PAP was seventh in 24.93 after placing third in heat one. The Abilene Wildcats/QRC duo of Asa Guevara and Jonathan Farinha qualified for the boy’s Under-18 final with Guevara returning the fourth fastest time, a personal best of 21.24 in finishing fifth in heat four.
Farinha was fifth quickest (21.36) in winning heat 2. Richards (Quantum/Asja Boys) was second best in the boy’s Under-20 200m semifinals, clocking 21.11 to win heat two. Nicholas Landeau and Jevon Joseph were fourth and sixth, respectively, in the boy’s Under-18 1500m finals. The Air Bon Sonics/Belmont Boys secondary student clocked 4:10.17 and 4:13.03, respectively. In action late yesterday was Ayana Glasgow and Meriah Freeman, who were due to contest the 800m in the seventh and final event of the girl’s Under-18 Heptathlon. Glasgow (Toco TAFAC/Toco Sec) lies in fourth on 3635 points with Freeman (D’Abadie Progressive/Five Rivers) is in fifth (3504). In the girl’s Under-20 event Kechelle Douglas (Toco TAFAC/Toco Sec) was also in fifth on 3205 with only the 800m event left. Marielle Pierre and Shaian Charles were in battle in the girl’s Under-18 discus finals. The 4x100m relays finals were also contested where T&T were listed to compete in the girl’s Under-18 and boy’s Under-20 events. Later today, Olympic-bound Keshorn Walcott will start as the overwhelming favourite to win his second CAC Junior boy’s Under-20 javelin title. The Toco thrower is the Pan American and CAC Junior record holder with his 80.11 effort in Cuba in May.
