T&T OLYMPIC ATHLETE PROFILE 2012
George Bovell - Swimming (50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke)

George Bovell knows what it’s like to be part of an Olympic medal ceremony.

At the 2004 Games, in Athens, Greece, the Trinidad and Tobago swimmer earned bronze in the men’s 200 metres individual medley in one minute, 58.80 seconds.

Four years later, in Beijing, China, Bovell competed in the 50 metres freestyle, as well as the 100 free. In the longer race, he finished 20th overall in the opening round in 48.83 seconds, and did not advance to the semis. In the 50, though, Bovell progressed to the semis sixth fastest with a 21.77 seconds scorcher. A 21.86 seconds swim in his semifinal heat earned him 11th spot overall.

Bovell is hoping to return to the podium at the London Games. He will compete in the 100 backstroke and 100 free, but it is in the 50 free that he expects to make an impact.

T&T at the Olympics
Bovell splashes off Sunday

Published: Friday, July 27, 2012
Shernice Thomas

George Bovell III is the most successful swimmer to come out of T&T. Some highlights of his illustrious career include winning bronze in the men’s 200m Individual Medley (IM), capturing five Pan American Medals (2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze), and five individual NCAA titles. Bovell is currently the fourth fastest man in history of the 50m freestyle. Coming from a family with a history of involvement in sport, it was only natural that Bovell followed suit. His mother, Barbara, was an Olympic runner and a Canadian champion. His father was a successful Collegiate swimmer and T&T Sportsman of the Year. Hiss brother, Nicholas, is also an Olympic swimmer.

From the age of seven, he started competitive swimming. Nine years later, he stepped onto the international stage, competing at the US Open and Pan American Games. In 2000 Bovell enrolled at Auburn University, where he won five individual NCAA titles, eight SEC titles, 25 All American Honours (the most in Auburn history) and was part of the first class in the history of NCAA sports to finish their eligibility undefeated. In the fall of 2004, he suffered a  knee injury that would prevent him from swimming breastroke and competing in the individual medley. This forced him to focus on his second best events—the 100 and 200 freestyles.

In 2006, he trained under Mike Bottom at Cal Berkeley where he learned proper sprinting technique. He followed Bottom to the Raceclub in the Florida Keys in 2007 to train for the 2008 Olympics. In Beijing, he broke the Olympic record in the heats, but was not able to secure a spot in the finals, finishing 11th in the 50 freestyle.  In 2009, Bovell broke the World Championships record and became the fourth fastest man in history in the 50m freestyle. He reunited with the coach who took him to his bronze medal in Athens, Sport Minister Anil Roberts in 2010 and had stellar performances at the World Championships in Dubai, finishing fourth in the 100m IM and 10th in 50m free.  In 2011, Bovell placed seventh in the finals of the World Swimming Championships, proving that he is a medal contender for 2012.

With all the big names and favourites, look out for Hanser Garcia of Cuba in the sprint freestyle races. He was the fastest on the surface of the water last year at pan am, and that included Cielo of Brazil, but his starts were so piss poor that he was coming up half a body length behind everyone. Presuming he has fixed that during his time in Italy with Andrea di Nino, he will be an absolute monster in London. Also, he is one of the youngest in the top tier of sprinting and has one of the highest ceilings for improvement.
Success will never take you by surprise.

Little known fact: The online transportation medium called Uber was pioneered in Trinidad & Tobago in the 1960's. It was originally called pullin bull.

In the 50 his chances are very good. As good, I think, as 8 years ago in the 200 IM. He's the only one in the field with a seeded time that is as a result of in season training and no rest, and he is .40 from the second seed with that time. On paper, he looks good!
Success will never take you by surprise.

I believe George can win us our first medal of this games and get the ball rolling!

If he does then I think the team will be inspired and we can win at least 2 or 3 more medals from the other athletes!   :beermug:

Solid swim, national record. Good signs for the 50 later. Onto the 100 free to get a better perspective. Incidentally, two Caribbean swimmers through to the semis this morning. Alia Atkinson of Jamaica in the women's 100 breast and Brett Fraser of the Cayman Islands in the 200 free.
Success will never take you by surprise.

Padington says Bovell could medal again
By KEVIN SUNICH Monday, July 30 2012

FORMER Olympian Sebastian Paddington is optimistic that 2004 Olympic bronze medallist George Bovell 111 will claim another swimming medal for Trinidad and Tobago at the Olympics.

Yesterday Bovell failed to advance to the semi-final of the men’s 100m Backstroke although he won his heat in a time of 55.22 seconds. The fastest 16 swimmers, based on times, progressed to the semis yesterday morning.

However the lanky TT swimmer will re-enter the pool for action on Tuesday when he contests the 100m Freestyle and again on August 2 for the 50m Freestyle.

Bovell, who is currently the fourth fastest performer of all time in the 50m Freestyle, will be hoping to better his performances tomorrow. He will be among two TT athletes in action on the day, the other being boxer Carlos Suarez who will compete in the light flyweight division.

Yesterday Paddington said the TT swimming ace moved to Michigan early this year to improve his preparation for the games.

“He moved there to train with Mike Bottom an American coach, so Mike and Minister Anil Roberts have been working together in helping him.

He was working here in TT for a year and a half by himself, and it was very difficult for him”, said the 2000 Sydney Olympian.

Paddington, chairman of the Sports Company of TT, said George is now in the right frame of mind for the biggest sporting event in the world. “He has a team of athletes from around the world who are complementing and giving him the support both in the pool and out the pool, which is great.”

The former National swimmer said at the moment the 2004 bronze medallist stands a great chance of claiming another medal at the London Games.

“He registered a good time two months ago which places around fifth or six in the world. It is just to get it right and be the best on that day. Once you get to the final it’s anybody’s race. We saw Hasely Crawford win a gold from lane one, so anything is possible”.
