Women football clubs called to join WoLF.

Women’s League Football (Wolf), the premier women’s football competition in the country, is inviting interested clubs to register for the upcoming season, which is set to kick off in April.

The league will have a Premier Division and a First Division comprising three zones. Successful registrants are likely to be placed within one of the three zones.

U-17 Soca Princesses to use Wolf as CFU prep.

In an effort to help expedite the preparations of this country’s Under-17 Soca Princesses for the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, the national lasses will compete in this year’s edition of the Women’s League Football (Wolf). The season kicks off on Saturday at Constantine Park, Macoya, with a family day.

The CFU first round group of qualifiers are set for US Virgin Islands from August 19 to 26 and will involve four teams in the group with the final round of qualifiers slated for September 18 to 25 at a venue to be determined towards qualification for the 2014 Fifa U-17 Women’s World Cup, the fourth edition in Costa Rica from March 14 to April 15, next year.

This was disclosed by Wolf press officer and manager of the national U-17 women’s team Jinelle James at the launch of this year’s league which was held at the T&T Football Federation head office, Ana Street, Woodbrook, yesterday.

James, a former national player herself, explained: “Since the national U-17 women’s team went to Fort Lauderdale at the end of August last year with coach Marlon Charles they have stopped training and to help expedite their development and preparations for the preliminary round of qualifiers a decision was taken by Wolf to have them participate in the league and also in the Premier Division, where the level of play will be much better for them.”

Akheela Mullon has been coaching with our youth teams since January and we want to encourage female coaches into the men's football scene. We have female physios, referees and match commissioners, so why not female coaches if they're good enough? Akheela gets respect because she is still a very talented footballer.

Central FC will be entering a team into the Japs-sponsored WoLF (Women’s League Football) First Division. The newly formed team will compete against Tobago All Stars, Tunapuna Titans, UWI and Malabar All Stars.

“This is something that was on our business plan from day one,” said Central FC managing director, Brent Sancho. “We stated that we wanted to give opportunities to the young people of Central, and to fulfil our promise, we must include females.”

Sancho said that initially there would not be many players from the central region. “As with the men’s team, we had open trials, but the attendance from local players was very low.

However, through the season we have uncovered some remarkably talented players who hail from the central region and this means next season, our team will be more representative of the region. We expect to follow the same pattern with the ladies. We are already seeing a new crop of talented girls at the Central FC Football Factory coaching school and this will be the route to the women’s team.”

The “Lady Sharks” will be fielding some exciting talent. “We are proud to have recruited some of T&T’s brightest talent,” said team manager Adrian Romain. “Players like 18-year-olds Victoria Swift, Samantha Kissoon and T&T Under-17 captain Anique Walker will be immense role models for the Central female community, and we hope they will encourage more girls to take an interest in football.”

Head coach of the Lady Sharks is former T&T international Ahkeela Mollon, the first female footballer from T&T to earn an overseas football contract, which saw her playing in Sweden and Finland.

“Ahkeela is a valuable member of the Central FC staff,” said Sancho. “At this club, we don’t believe in pigeonholing people. We practise a philosophy that says that if you’re good enough to do a job, then you should do it. Ahkeela was brought on board to coach our boys youth teams.

As she develops her skills, I’d love to see her coaching our reserve team, and then, who knows? We have female physios, match officials and match commissioners in the Pro League, so why not a female coach?” Sancho went on to say “We did not hire Ahkeela to coach the ladies team, however, she obviously has a keen interest in promoting womens football and when she requested the coaching position, of course, we were delighted.”

Operations director Kevin Harrison said: “As you would expect, the Lady Sharks will also be active in our community projects. We see this as an exciting opportunity to inspire young women throughout the central region. Ahkeela is a great role model for young people.”

Harrison said “Places like England still have glass ceilings inside football and you see very few black players making it through into management. In the Pro League, the doors are open to coaches from home and abroad and there is no barrier due to race, creed or colour. The only glass ceiling left to smash in T&T is the belief that women can’t coach men.”

Harrison said Central FC will be embarking on the second stage of their SIS Central Community Challenge on Sunday, when they play Cap Off Youths FC at Jerry Junction Recreational Ground, Carapichaima.

“These games are great for us, because there are no Pro League games until May 3. We beat a full-strength Antigua Barracuda side 6-1 on Wednesday, with Rundell Winchester scoring a hat-trick, and we’re using these community games to give players like Rundell, who has just come back from injury, the chance to regain match fitness.”

The Community Challenge will give the people of Carapichaima and Waterloo the chance to see national players such as Darren Mitchell, Jason Marcano and Marvin Phillip as well as 2006 Soca Warrior, Anthony Wolfe. Meanwhile, Cap Off Youths, coached by Michael Davis, will be fielding local heroes such as Emilio Smith, Wendell Archibald, Neon O’Garro, Kareem Garcia, Jaffet Williams, Garvin Samaroo.

“We field a full strength squad, though, of course, we will rotate some players to give everyone a game,” said Harrison. “We will have a few giveaways and The Sharkettes will be on hand to add some glamour, along with a music truck. Thanks go to Mr Stephen Bartholomew and the Waterloo Institute of Soccer Players for helping to bring professional football into the heart of the community.”

Kick-off at Carapichaima is at 4 pm tomorrow and admission is free.

Exactly, which is why Ahkeela is coaching our youth teams. But some of the U17's play in the reserves and also with our senior team, but they still respect Ahkeela. Our hope is to bring some of the other girls in the team into coaching at our coaching schools.

Malick stun Real.

Malick City stomped on 2012 League Winners, Real Dimension WFC in their first face off in the 2013 TT WoLF season last Friday.

Malick City were ready from the blow of the whistle and  took charge in the 2nd minute of the game when Akeela Oliver got past the defender and took a curling shot to the first post that was out of the reach of Real Dimension custodian, Keri Myers. Real Dimension would try to turn it up with individual skill and  passes but shots would either go way over bars or wide of the post.

In the second half, Malick City seemed more determined to go after their opponents and would be rewarded when Myers would mistakenly pass the ball to the oncoming Akeela Oliver who made no mistake and got herself on the scoresheet once again  to put Malick 2 goals up.

Real Dimension did not give up but had several failed attempts until Alania Burgin took a shot that was too much for Shalette Alexander to handle and parried back out to an onrushing Shanelle Henry  who played a low shot past Alexander to make the score 2-1.

Malick would seal their victory when Real D custodian would commit a foul and seemingly take out her nemesis for the night, Akeela Oliver, in the penalty area. Captain Anastasia Prescott would convert and although Real Dimension pressed and they had many chances, nothing would fall in their favor.

In other matches played last weekend, the National U-17 Team drew with Step by Step F.A. 2 goals each with Denise Tucker and Kamara Charles scoring in the 15' and 45+' for Step by Step while Zoe Swift netted both goals for the U-17s in the 21' and 83'.

Trincity Nationals defeated Defence Force 2 goals to nil and the Warrick sisters scored both goals.

St. Ann's Rangers drew 1-1 with St. Augustine F.C. Patrice Superville gave St. Augustine the lead in the 26' for St. Augustine while Maya Matouk equalised for Rangers in the 42'.

MALICK CITY FC will be aiming for their second straight win in the Premier Division of the Trinidad and Tobago Women’s League Football (WoLF) tomorrow.

Malick, who defeated reigning champs Real Dimension in the opening round last weekend, will be hosting Tobago United at Pascal Ground, Maraval at 4 pm.

Three other games in the Premier Division will be staged today. A double-header has been carded for the Dibe Recreation Ground, Long Circular, St James, with Step By Step FC tackling Defence Force at 2 pm and Real Dimension opposing the Trinidad and Tobago Under-17 team two hours later.

And Trincity Nationals are also gunning for their second win in a row, as they are due to face St Ann’s Rangers at the Eddie Hart Ground, Tacarigua, today at 4 pm. Matches in the First Division Group “A” and Group “B” will be contested tomorrow.

In Group “A”, Barataria Ball Players will entertain Malabar All Stars at the St George’s College Ground, Barataria, from 4 pm while, an hour later, Tunapuna Titans will tackle Diego Martin Central United at Constantine Park, Macoya.

And, in Group “B”, games will begin at four o’clock, with La Brea United hosting the Ministry of Sport Schoolaz at Brighton Ground and Petrotrin entertaining Civic Centre Pioneers at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre.

Malick City Trincity, stay perfect in Wolf.

Jonelle Warrick of Trincity Nationals and Emarie Holland of Malick City had stellar performances for their respective teams to secure their second win from as many matches when the T&T Women’s League Football (WoLF) Premier Division continued on the weekend.

On Saturday at the Eddie Hart Ground, Tunapuna, Warrick, who also netted in her team’s 2-0 shutout of Defence Force to kick off the season, hammered in a beaver-trick for Trinity Nationals in a 5-1 pounding of St Ann’s Rangers.

Warrick got her goals in the 11th, 30th, 36th and 59th minutes while Charissa Delzin added the other in the 71st for a 5-0 lead before Chelsea-Marie Spencer got a 90th-minute consolation strike for Rangers, which drew 1-1 with St Augustine in their opener.

Malick, which spanked defending champions Real Dimension 3-1 in its opener, blanked Tobago WFC 2-0 with Holland scoring a second-half brace in the 63rd and 72nd minute for her team at Pascal Ground, Maraval, to trail Trincity on goal difference at the top of the nine-club standings, both with six points.

Step By Step is two points behind in third spot after a 2-1 win over Defence Force in the first match of a double-header at Dibe Ground, Long Circular, while two hours later at the same venue, Real Dimension finally jump-started its bid to repeat as champions with a 5-0 trouncing of the T&T  Under-17 women’s team who are using the tournament as part of their preparations for the Caribbean Football Under-17 Championships.

For Real Dimension, former national forward Alania Burgin and current T&T midfielder Dernelle Mascall scored two apiece and Natasha St Louis, also a national player, the other. However, the biggest winners on the weekend were Diego Martin Central which blasted Tunapuna Titans 11-0, led by a beaver-trick from Allizza Mc Cutcheon and a treble from Breanna George.

Diego Martin, which also got a goal each from Malak Marcelle, Akilah Crawford, Micheala Samaroo and Rosario Lewis at Constantine Park, Macoya, on Sunday, leads the six-team Group B table with six points from two matches, three ahead of Malabar All Stars, 6-0 victors against Barataria Ball Players, and Central FC. In the First Division Group B matches played, La Brea Angels made it two wins on the trot after a 4-0 shutout of Mos Schoolaz while Petrotrin edged Civic Centre Pioneers 3-2.

WoLF matches starts this Friday with an interesting match up between 2012 First Division Champs, Step by Step and 2012 North Zone Champions, St. Ann's Rangers.

Last year Rangers won the battle by defeating Step by Step to cop the North Zone Title but Step by Step ultimately won the war by taking the First Division Title.

These two teams face each other for the first time this season in the Premier Division and should make for a dog fight to the very end. This match is scheduled to start at 6:30pm at UWI Front Ground.

Also on Friday, Real Dimension faces Defence Force at the Hasely Crawford Training Field, 4:30pm,  as they go for their second consecutive win and sit in third place behind Trincity Nationals and Malick City.

On Saturday, Trincity Nationals face Premier Division newcomers St. Augustine at the St. Augustine Secondary Ground, 4:30pm and on Sunday the National U-17 Girls will travel to Tobago to play Tobago United at an unconfirmed venue.

 Is the league a pro/semi pro or amateur league? Are high school players involved in the league because the forseable issue would be the loss of eligibility if they intend to go on and play for schools in the US. Currently the NCAA and NAIA clearinghouses have no definitive way determining the staus of leagues outside the US.

In an intense face off last Saturday between Trincity Nationals and St. Augustine F.C., many would have thought that Trincity would walk away with 3 points. St. Augustine had other plans though and from the blow of the whistle anyone could see that St. Augustine was hungry and determined to win.

They would be rewarded in the 39th minute when there was some confusion between defender and Linfah Jones, WWC U-17 Goalkeeper, wich resulted in the ball bouncing onto the feet of Denisha O'Brien who had an empty goal waiting.

The game's intensity heightened and became very physical and aggressive. The Warrick sisters were not able to make any dent on the game although they had some opportunities to score. National Youth Mid-fielder, Patrice Campbell, played a major role in St. Augustine's success as she dribbled pass her Trincity opponents with confidnece and skill.

She also had a hand in St. Augustine's second goal as a ball was driven across the goal  and had Jones stretching with only her tips to deflect into the path of Denesha O'Brien, who would again score her second goal in the 54'. Jonelle Warrick would have her chance to get Trincity on the board when she was released to leave her one on one with the keeper.

She would place the shot under the onrushing goalkeeper, Nicole Mitchelle-Thomas, but the post would save St. Augustine and keep Trincity goalless. The final goal would come in the 74' when goalkeeper Jones came out to clear a bouncing ball while St. Augustine striker, Celeste Thomas was also rushing to get the ball; Thomas would get there first and sealed the victory for St. Augustine.

In other Premier Division Matches, Real Dimension defeated Defence Force by 2 goals to nil while Step by Step and Rangers would draw 1 goal each. The National U-17s travelled to Tobago and earned their first victory with a 2-1 victory over the Tobago Women's Team.

So far the class of this (Frist Division A) seems to be Central and Tobago. Everyone else has a lot of 'learning' to do. DMC lost 13-0 to Tobago last week. smh
