Nice hopefully he can hold his form and bring a medal home, with Quow not performing as he once was and Lalonde disappearing over the past few weeks.

Yea. I saw Quow's time, but it was nothing worth mentioning. He will have to improve by 0.5 seconds to be a factor.

Quow has been the most consistent T&T quartermiler since senior champs, leading up to the CWG. He is not overdoing it on the circuit like Botswana's Makwala (19.96 and 44.01 on the same day). I predict he will go sub-45 in the competition.

Solomon on the other hand tends to run himself into peak form going into major games as he did in 2012, kudos to him.

Hopefully Gordon is not injured and is indeed prepping for the games. If so, all 3 should make the finals and be in medal-contending form.

They will have their hands full with Kirani James, Makwala, Van Niekerk (South Africa) who ran 20.19 and 44.38, the gauntlet of Bahamians (Brown, Williams, Mathieu, Miller ranging from 44.6 to 45.2),a couple Jamaicans (Francis and Gauntlett), Steve Solomon (Australia), and whichever Brits show up to defend their home soil. Should be a fast and competitive final.

Jarrin Solomon joined the sub-45 club yesterday, the Trinidad and Tobago quartermiler clocking a personal best 44.98 seconds to grab GOLD in the men’s 400 metres event, at the KBC Night of Athletics meet, in Belgium.

Solomon forced American Manteo Mitchell to settle for SILVER in 45.12 seconds, while third spot went to hometown hero Jonathan Borlee (45.37).

With the 44.98 run, Solomon became the tenth T&T athlete to dive under 45 seconds in the one-lap event.

National record holder Ian Morris is at the top of the list at 44.21 seconds. Deon Lendore is second with a 44.36 run. The 2012 Olympic bronze medallist, Lalonde Gordon is third at 44.52, while 2009 World Championship bronze medallist Renny Quow is at number four with a 44.53 run.

Patrick Delice is next on the list at 44.58, ahead of 1964 Olympic SILVER medallist Wendell Mottley (44.82), Alvin Daniel (44.84), Ato Stephens (44.87), Mike Paul (44.88) and Solomon (44.98).

Keston Bledman was also on show at the KBC Night of Athletics meet. The T&T sprinter finished third in the men’s 100m dash. American Marvin Bracy was first to the line in 10.13, while SILVER was seized by former world record holder Asafa Powell, the Jamaican getting home in 10.15.

At the Meeting MADRID 2014, in Spain, Quow picked up silver in the men’s 400m, the T&T quartermiler completing his lap of the track in 45.36 seconds. Bahamian Latoy Williams clocked 45.17 to top the field, while bronze was bagged by American Kyle Clemons (45.37).

And T&T’s Wayne Davis II finished third in the men’s 110m hurdles in a wind-assisted 13.34 seconds. The top two spots went to American Aleec Harris (13.18) and Barbadian Shane Brathwaite (13.32).

Solomon, Bledman, Quow, Davis, Lendore and Gordon are all expected to wear T&T colours at the July23-August 3 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

Borel finishes 3rd at Anniversary Games
By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com
Story Created: Jul 20, 2014 at 11:19 PM (T&T Express)

Cleopatra Borel finished third in the women’s shot put at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games in London, England, yesterday. The Trinidad and Tobago field athlete produced a big 18.99 metres effort in the fourth and final round.

Germany’s Christina Schwanitz was the class of the field, winning the event with a 19.92m throw. American Michelle Carter (19.80m) secured the runner-up spot.

Borel has been in fine form this season. She threw 19.10m to win at a meet in Cuba in March. And in June, at the adidas Grand Prix IAAF Diamond League meet, the Mayaro thrower landed the shot 19.04m to bag bronze.

On Friday, Borel threw 18.96m to finish fourth at the Herculis IAAF Diamond League meet, in Monaco.

Borel is preparing for the July 23-August 3 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, and is among the potential medallists on the T&T team.

Borel has a history of Commonwealth Games success. At the 2002 Games in Manchester, England, she was fourth with a 16.27m throw. Four years later, in Melbourne, Australia, Borel improved to third, taking home the bronze medal with a 17.87m effort. She did even better at the 2010 Games, in Delhi, India, producing an impressive 19.03m throw to seize SILVER.

Borel strikes gold in Brazil
Tuesday, August 12 2014 (T&T Newsday)

National female shot putter Cleopatra Borel continued her medal winning performances, striking gold at the World Challenge Meet in Brazil on Sunday.

Borel, who has been consistent this year, threw the shot put 18.29 metres to snatch the glory despite arriving at the hotel only 10 hours before the start of the meet.

Last month she secured silver at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland with a 18.52m throw.

Meanwhile last Friday, Deandra Daniel was fourth in the women’s high jump, clearing 1.73m at the North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Under-23 Championships held in Kamloops, Canada. Alyxandria Treasure of Canada was first with 1.85m followed by American Shanay Briscoe (1.76) and Rebecca Haworth (1.76) of Canada. Also, Moriba Morian failed to qualify for the finals of the men 100m, finishing third in his heat in 10.57 seconds. Steve Waithe and Akeem Stewart captured silver and bronze respectively, though, Waithe was second in the triple jump with a distance of 15.94m behind Eric Sloan (16.20) of United States, Lathone Collie Minns of Bahamas was third with 15.86m.

Stewart settled for third place in the shot put with a 17.76m throw while Americans Willy Irwin (19.44) and Darrell Hill (18.85) were first and second respectively.

Mark London failed to secure a medal in the men’s 800 event, finishing seventh in the final after crossing the line in one minute 52.87 seconds. Mexican Bryan Martinez Sanchez won with a time of one minute 47.90 followed by Thomas Riva (1:48.19) of Canada and American Christopher Low (1:48.19) who were second and third respectively.

IAAF Diamond League Stockholm 2014 - 100m Men

Keston Bledman produced his best run in two months to secure silver in the men’s 100 metres dash, at the DN Galan IAAF Diamond League meet, in Stockholm, Sweden, yesterday.

The Trinidad and Tobago sprinter got to the line in 10.09 seconds to grab second spot, behind Jamaican Nesta Carter, the winner in 9.96. Great Britain’s Chijindu Ujah finished third in 10.10—the same time clocked by fourth-placed Jamaican Nickel Ashmeade. American Mike Rodgers was disqualified for a false start.

The last time Bledman ran faster than 10.10 seconds was on June 21 when he clocked a season’s best 10-flat to finish second at the NGC/Sagicor National Open Championships.

The Florida-based athlete was unable to find his best form at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, last month, and was eliminated in the semifinal round. Yesterday’s solid 10.09 effort was Bledman’s first run since the Commonwealth meet.

IAAF Diamond League Stockholm 2014 - 400m Hurdles MEN

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Jehue Gordon got home in 50.13 seconds to capture bronze in the DN Galan men’s 400m hurdles. Gordon exacted revenge on South African Cornel Fredericks, the man who had beaten T&T’s reigning world champion in the Commonwealth final. Fredericks was fourth in 50.18.

World Championship silver medallist Michael Tinsley took gold yesterday, the American clocking 49.60 seconds. Puerto Rican Javier Culson picked up silver in 49.84, while Dominican Republic’s two-time Olympic champion Felix Sanchez was seventh in 51.68.

Olympic champion Keshorn Walcott hurled the spear past the 80-metre mark five times in the DN Galan men’s javelin event. The best of those efforts, 84.27 metres, earned the T&T athlete sixth spot in a quality field of throwers.

Finland’s newly-crowned European champion Antti Ruuskanen emerged victorious with an 87.24m throw. German Thomas Rohler (85.12m) and Finland’s 2007 world champion Tero Pitkamaki (84.73m) finished second and third, respectively. And Kenyan Julius Yego (84.67m), the African and Commonwealth Games champion, was fourth, one spot ahead of Egypt’s Ihab Abdelrahman (84.58m).

Walcott finished second to Yego at the Commonwealth Games.

On Sunday, at the Espoo Challenge in Finland, Josanne Lucas struck gold in the women’s 100m hurdles, the T&T athlete stopping the clock at 13.33 seconds.

On Saturday, in Mexico City, Mexico, T&T’s Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Ayanna Alexander finished sixth in the Pan American Sports Festival women’s triple jump with a 13.48m effort. Cuba swept the medals, Mabel Gay (14.53m), Yarianna Martinez (14.29m) and Dailenis Alcantara (14.29m) finishing first, second and third, respectively.

Bledman has been too inconsistent this season for my liking.
From running 10.09 in Stockholm and placing 2nd he runs 10.29 and places 6th a few days later.
Doesn't look like he will run below 10s this season but at least it will be more pleasing to see him consistently placing in the top 3 in his races based on his 10 flat SB in T&T this season.
Hopefully he can run some consistent times next season but maybe issues with getting his Elite funding that was promised to him has negatively affected his preparations and thus performances this season.

I will give him a bligh on this run, as it was more than likely just a shakeout. He would have been in Stockholm less than 24 hours prior.

CEDENIO WINS IN AMSTERDAM
Borel bags Birmingham bronze

Story Created: Aug 24, 2014 at 10:42 PM ECT (T&T Express)

World junior 400 metres champion Machel Cedenio enjoyed success in his first individual outing since capturing the global under-20 title, striking gold in the Flame Games men’s one-lap event in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on Friday.

Though he was the youngest athlete to face the starter in the Flame Games 400m A race, Cedenio emerged as the class of the field, the 18-year-old Trinidad and Tobago quartermiler clocking 45.48 seconds for a comfortable cushion on Brazilian Anderson Henriques, the runner-up in 45.82. Netherlands athlete, Lee-Marvin Bonevacia (46.17) finished third.

Last month, in Eugene, Oregon, USA, Cedenio earned IAAF World Junior Championship gold in 45.13 seconds--a new national under-20 record and the fastest time in the world this year by a junior athlete.

T&T sprinter Keston Bledman finished sixth in the Flame Games men’s 100m final in 10.29 seconds. Justin Gatlin won easily, getting to the line in 10-flat to finish well-ahead of his fellow-American Marvin Bracy, who claimed silver in 10.17. Bronze went to Netherlands sprinter Churandy Martina (10.20).

In the Flame Games qualifying round, Bledman was second in heat one and third overall in 10.26 seconds. On Thursday, at the DN Galan IAAF Diamond League meet in Stockholm, Sweden, Bledman had earned silver in 10.09.

At the Sainsbury’s Birmingham Grand Prix IAAF Diamond League meet, in England, yesterday, T&T’s Cleopatra Borel claimed bronze in the women’s shot put with an 18.62 metres effort. The 2014 Commonwealth Games silver medallist produced five 18-plus throws in the competition—18.06m, 18.09m, 18.45m, 18.62m, and 18.12m.

New Zealand’s Valerie Adams was victorious, the Olympic, world and Commonwealth champion throwing 19.96m. Germany’s European champion Christina Schwanitz (19.27m) finished second.

Trinidad and Tobago had a good showing in the North, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) World Masters Athletics Championships which ended yesterday at the National Stadium in San Jose, Costa Rica.

The event was open to athletes aged 30 and over from any country of the world and T&T had 31 athletes competing both in track and field events.

On the track, Oswald Rogers won the men's 75-79 100m in 14.72 seconds with Daniel Laurence second in 17.59 seconds. T&T swept the top four spots in the 100m 50-54 category with Martin Prime winning in 11.65, Lester Herbert second in 11.95, and Irvin Thomas third in 11.96.

T&T Olympian Richard Thompson claimed gold at the IAAF World Challenge Meet in Berlin, Germany, yesterday, clocking 10.15 (-0.2) seconds in the men’s 100m.

Thompson edged USA’s Dentarius Locke 10.16 seconds, while another T&T Olympic runner, Keston Bledman, came in third in 10.23 seconds.

Both T&T runners came off disappointing campaigns at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where neither managed a spot in the men’s 100m final.

Last Thurdsay, Thompson was in action at the IAAF Diamond League in Zurich, Switzerland, where he placed seventh in 10.26 seconds.

Also last week, competing in the Stockholm leg of the Diamond League, Beldman placed second in the same distance.

Meanwhile, Cleopatra Borel, T&T’s lone woman’s represtative at the World Challenge Meet placed third in the shot put. The Commonwealth silver medalist threw 18.53m, behind winner Christina Schwanitz of Germany (19.53m) and Evgeniia Kolodko of Russia (19.43). Borel stands at number seven in the world rankings.

Thompson takes World Challenge gold
Monday, September 1 2014 (T&T Newsday)

National champion and record holder, Richard Thompson, clinched gold yesterday in the Men’s 100m final at the IAAF World Challenge in Berlin, Germany. Thompson, the 2008 Olympic silver medallist, sped to victory into a headwind in a time of 10.15 to pip American Dentarius Locke who crossed the finish line in 10.16. There was further cause for celebration as TT’s Keston Bledman placed third in 10.23.

It was a welcome result for the TT duo who had an awful individual campaign at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Scotland where they failed to make it into the final.

At this week’s Diamond League meet in in Switzerland, Thompson had another disappinting showing, coming in seventh (10.26) in an impressive field that included Jamaican winner Kemar Bailey-Cole (9.96), USA’s Mike Rodgers and Tyson Gay as well as Asafa Powell and Nesta Carter of Jamaica.

There was further joy for the red, white and black yesterday with the consistent Cleopatra Borel earnign a bronze in the Women’s shot put final. Borel has been among the medals this season with silver at the Commonwealth Games and bronze at the recent Birmingham Grand Prix.

It was another podium finish for the 35-year-old who tossed the metal ball 18.53m to secure a medal. German favourite Christina Schwanitz took the gold with a powerful 19.53m effort while Russia’s Evgeniia Kolodko claimed the runner-up spot with a 19.43m throw.

Meanwhile, Jamaican Kerron Stewart held off the American duo of Joanna Atkins and Jessica Young to take the Women’s 100m gold. Stewart stopped the clock at 11.25 ahead of the fast finishing Atkins (11.26) and Young (11.32).

‘Torpedo’ Thompson wins in Berlin

By Kwame Laurence kwame.laurence@trinidadexpress.com

Richard ‘Torpedo’ Thompson celebrated Trinidad and Tobago’s 52nd Independence Anniversary with victory at the ISTAF Berlin IAAF World Challenge meet, in Germany, yesterday. Thompson clocked 10.15 seconds to grab top spot in the men’s 100 metres dash, the triple Olympic medallist forcing American Dentarius Locke to settle for silver in 10.16. Another T&T sprinter, Keston Bledman got to the line in 10.23 seconds to secure bronze.

For Thompson, the golden run was a return to winning ways. In May and June this year, the US-based athlete was unbeaten in 100m finals, his best run coming at the NGC/Sagicor National Open Championships, where he captured the century title with a 9.82 seconds scorcher – a new national record and the second fastest time in the world this year, behind American Justin Gatlin’s 9.80.

Thompson was winless in July. That month’s campaign included participation at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Though among the favourites for gold in Glasgow, the 29-year-old sprinter was eliminated in the semi-final round.

After a month away from competition, Thompson was back on the track last Thursday, at the Weltklasse IAAF Diamond League finals in Zurich, Switzerland. He finished seventh in the Weltklasse 100m event in 10.26 seconds. Three days later, Thompson regained his golden form with the T&T Independence Day victory in the German capital.

Commonwealth Games silver medallist Cleopatra Borel continued her fine run of form with bronze in the ISTAF Berlin women’s shot put. The T&T field athlete threw the iron ball 18.53 metres. Germany’s Christina Schwanitz won in front of her home crowd, the 2014 European champion landing the shot 19.53m. The runner-up spot went to Russia’s Evgeniia Kolodko (19.43m).

Congrats Ayanna Alexander.

Ayanna Alexander found the ideal way to mark Trinidad and Tobago’s 52nd Independence Anniversary on Sunday-- with a national record. In still conditions, at the T.C. Williams High School in Virginia, USA, Alexander disturbed the sand at 14.40 metres for gold in the Potomac Valley Games women’s triple jump.

The impressive jump was a big improvement on the previous T&T record of 14.15m-- established by Alexander on May 19, 2012 at the Quantum Invitational Track & Field Classic, in Trinidad.

Alexander bounced back from a serious ankle injury earlier this year to earn bronze at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, the 32-year-old athlete jumping 14.01m.

Up until Sunday, that was her only 14-metre effort in 2014. She changed that statistic at the Potomac Valley Games, producing a jump that would have given her gold in Glasgow. With the big 14.40m effort, Alexander leaped from 39th to tenth on the 2014 world performance list.

Colombia’s Caterine Ibarguen leads the world with the huge 15.31m effort she produced at the Herculis IAAF Diamond League meet, in Monaco, on July 18. Russian Yekaterina Koneva is second at 14.89m, one spot ahead of Ukraine’s European champion Olha Saladukha (14.73m).

Jamaica’s Commonwealth Games gold medallist Kimberly Williams is fourth with a 14.59m jump, just ahead of Colombian Yorsiris Urrutia (14.58m). Cuba’s Mabel Gay (14.53m), and Russians Alsu Murtazina (14.50m) and Irina Gumenyuk (14.46m) are sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively, while another Cuban, Dailenis Alcantara (14.45m) is ninth.
De higher a monkey climbs is de less his ass is on de line, if he works for FIFA that is! ;-)
