New local reality show, ‘Chick Mansion’ debuts on CCN TV6 next weekend.
By Wayne Bowman (Express).

A mansion of maidens

Your favourite television station, CCN TV6 will next Saturday July 19 premiere a brand new local reality series titled, Chick Mansion that will have you glued to your seat for two hours on the night of its debut then keep you coming back for more each week for the ten hour-long episodes that will follow.

The basic synopsis of Chick Mansion, we really don’t want to give away too much now and diminish the element of surprise, is that it follows the lives of 14 beautiful young women who live and lime at a beautiful mansion located somewhere here on the island. Some of them stay at the house, while several of them visit and spend time regularly.

They are all friends and share what the producers/directors, brother and sister duo, Dexter Browne and Stacy Browne define as an, “organic relationship”. The ladies are not acting, but are filmed going about their normal daily lives doing what they enjoy as individuals and with each other. The series is executive produced by Buttervision and was filmed using two iphone 5s units under the direction of Dexter Browne who is an internationally acclaimed photographer.

In Chick Mansion the young women discover quite a lot about their respective selves and also learn much about life and being young adults. The show is, however, meant to be fun and very light hearted with the young ladies going out to parties together, exploring various parts of the island, taking trips to Tobago and Jamaica and generally enjoying each other’s company and deepening their united bond of friendship and camaraderie.

With all foreign reality shows that feature people living together or circles of friends there is always a lot of bacchanal, drama, animosities and other negative elements. That will not be the case of Chick Mansion.

According to the producers there will be times when there will be, “A meeting of the minds and clashes of attitudes, but the girls really do enjoy each other’s company and they all allow each other to be themselves. There will be no irresponsible behavior.”

The show is adult viewer oriented in its genesis, but it does not go over the top. The producers offer that it can be considered to be PG13 so families can sit down and watch it together. What Chick Mansion portrays is the exciting energy and talents of each of the cast members in a way the finally exposes the elusive sexy subculture of Trinidad and Tobago. Nothing was ever scripted or rehearsed.

A graduate of Fatima College and also Howard University, Browne worked as a celebrity photographer in Los Angeles where he photographed the likes of Vanessa Williams, Rick James, Gabrielle Union, Tyrese, Kat Williams and many more. His sister, Stacy attended St James Government Secondary School and worked at Caribbean Airlines. Together they conceptualised Chick Mansion and set out to make their vision come to fruition.

“The show is about exploring undisturbed culture. There is no script, no casting, we are all friends and so the interaction comes naturally. We consider ourselves to be digital gorillas doing a lot with very little. We used just the two iphones and did not even use a boom microphone.”

“You see, using larger equipment would have chased who the girls really are because they would have felt that the cameras and lights were invading their space and also that this would demand them being someone other than their true selves. The way we have done things, no one ever feels the presence of the camera or of a crew and what comes out is the true personalities and spirit of the girls.”

“We are very excited over the partnership with CCN TV6. They understood our vision and embraced what we are doing. My sister and I as well as the girls have always enjoyed watching TV6, both the foreign content they choose to air and also the local programming they offer and it is a wonderful thing to have Chick Mansion on TV6. We are looking forward to providing more content to them in the coming years,” Dexter Browne said.

READY TO PLAY: Some of the ladies starring in the local reality television series titled, Chick Mansion premiering on CCN TV6 next Saturday at 8 p.m. Produced by Buttervision and created by Dexter and Stacy Browne.

Flow seeks rights to T&T movies

“Our goal would be that all local movies have the ability to be shown in T&T and watched by all of our customers, and up the islands. That would be our dream. That is what we want to do and that avenue is there for them to do it. They hopefully will embrace the deal for what it is and move forward to see that it is a viable alternative than just going through the traditional movie theatres. There are other avenues to do this.”

Geraldine Chaplin as Anne, and Yanet Mojica as Noeli in Sand Dollars.

Curtain comes down on T&T Film Festival

http://www.guardian.co.tt/lifestyle/2015-09-29/curtain-comes-down-tt-film-festival

Every day of the T&T Film Festival (TTFF), T&T Guardian columnist and film writer, BC PIRES, has been picking a Film of the Day.
Pires has been writing about film from an informed lay perspective since early 1988 and currently writes a film column, BC on TV, for the Sunday Guardian’s Arts section.

Pires served on the TTFF’s first jury and wrote the judges’ report. A different film will be picked every day, and other worthwhile films mentioned. Because of the limitations of programming schedules, the film of the day may not necessarily be the “best” one. Films with an asterisk have been or will be daily picks.

Sand Dollars takes its name from the star-fish found on almost all beaches in the Caribbean, but gives meaning to the sex tourism found in every Caribbean territory. A subtle, deeply-layered film, it follows the path of a young black couple —a man and a woman—who love one another, but who earn the money they need for a life together from having sex with tourists, with money enough to spare. (The man is not shown to be a gigolo but it is implied; the woman’s bisexuality seems to be more about doubling income streams than identity.)
Without passing judgment on any of the players, Sand Dollars illustrates the gamesmanship between the natives of usually-impoverished Caribbean holiday destinations and the visitors who come from abroad with their cash, their sophistication and their dream of returning home with the last thing left to plunder here: the people themselves.

Touching, sympathetic to all involved and remarkably restrained in pointing fingers, this is terrific symbolic cinema.
As a lanyap, the lead “foreign” role is played by Charlie Chaplin’s daughter, Geraldine, who is magnificent. A thought-provoking, gentle film that covers the unconsidered, rough reality of, “Life’s a beach”. And a very fitting last film in what has been the best T&T Film Festival so far.

Laventille film wins People’s Choice Award

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/20151014/features/laventille-film-wins-peoples-choice-award

City on the Hill, a premiere at this year’s Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival, entranced audiences with its uncommon perspective of the built and cultural heritage of East Port of Spain, going on to earn the People’s Choice Award for Short Film.

City on the Hill was commissioned by the project “Leveraging Built and Cultural Heritage of East Port of Spain”, and funded by the Research and Development Impact Fund, The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, 2015.

Co-Directors Professor Patricia Mohammed and Michael Mooleedhar expressed their gratitude to all involved in the creation of City on the Hill and their appreciation for the public’s warm reaction to the film, noting that it had struck a nationalistic chord of pride in many viewers. “We have received wonderful feedback from viewers who felt that the film offered them a window into a world that is often misunderstood,” said Mooleedhar. “It is extremely gratifying that our film connected with audiences and that it has achieved a measure of exposure for the rich cultural aspects of Laventille which are so worthy of our celebration.”

For the Directors, City on the Hill was intended to hold up a lens to the creative spirit of Laventille which continues to be an integral facet of Trinidad and Tobago’s developmental composition. The film featured interviews with spiritual and creative leaders of the area, with insight into the historical elements of Laventille delivered with lyrical presentations including Wendell Manwarren of 3 Canal’s moving rendition of the poetry and prose of Trinidadian cultural luminaries Earl Lovelace and Wayne Brown, as well as Nobel Laureate Derek Walcott.

Professor Mohammed remarked that the film’s People’s Choice win signified that audiences are keen to make deeper connections with rarely-explored parts of their homeland. “The film’s success makes it evident that local viewers are highly interested in learning about the different elements that comprise the tapestry of Trinidad and Tobago. Winning the People’s Choice Award is a testament to the immense value and fascinatingly complex nature of East Port of Spain.”

It would have been nice if the T&T Film festival could have done a Carnival related local film (or even documentary) early in the Carnival season and have it ready to be released Ash Wednesday

Crowdfund This: 'Tomb' - The Caribbean's First Science Fiction Thriller Feature Film

There's some excitement for diaspora cinema outside of the USA, as I've said before on this blog, as young creatives emerge within continental Africa, South America and the Caribbean, notably, and, in some cases, working with very limited resources in countries without much of a film industry (as we have here in the USA), but that they make up for with ideas, creativity, hustle and just the sheer will to succeed by any means necessary.

Here's one of those filmmakers whose previous work has been featured on this blog - Nicholas Attin, who hails from Trinidad & Tobago.

Attin has been hard at work on his next feature film - a science fiction thriller (a genre rarity when it comes to cinema of the Caribbean), titled "Tomb," for which he's writer, producer, and director.

Logline: An Astronaut responding to a distress beacon in deep space slips into a wormhole and finds himself in the afterlife.

And here's a longer synopsis: "On the 10th of September in the year 2025 several nations around the world join together for the largest expedition into the furthest regions of deep space. They share a common mission to discover a new way of life for all mankind. This mass galactic exodus is spearheaded by PROSELYTE GLOBAL, a world corporate entity responsible for the design of a special artificial intelligence on board each country’s starship. COMMANDER NELSON OBATALA and COMMANDER CHARLES MERCER are two astronauts representing Trinidad and Tobago.

They individually pilot two human inclusive deep space probes. During the long voyage what was expected to be six months of hyper sleep turns out to be much longer for Obatala. His vessel is ordered to change its course and respond to a distress beacon sent out by Mercer whose ship’s course had been mysteriously altered. Now separated from his wife and baby daughter for much longer than anticipated, Obatala must risk the success of his mission and the family he loves to find and rescue his dear friend and fellow countryman. The love for his wife and child may help him cope with the loneliness of space; his training may help him survive even giant rogue asteroids; but nothing could prepare anyone for the awesome unknown of a wormhole! Only on the other side will he truly come face to face with destiny."

Bazodee’ triumphs at film festival

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/20170326/features/8216bazodee8217-triumphs-at-film-festival

Coming off successful sold out double screenings at the 19th London/Asian Film Festival locally produced movie, Bazodee starring Machel Montano, Kabir Bedi, Natalie Perera, Valmike Rampersad and featuring a host of local actors and technical crew, picked up two major awards at the festival.

The movie was screened at the birthplace of British Cinema, the Regent Street Cinema in London on March 19 and proved such a success that people are asking whether there will be anymore screenings available.

The closing ceremony and gala awards were held at the very prestigious British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
The first award won by Bazodee was the Audience Choice Award, presented to the movie that gathers the most support by an audience. Bazodee had two sold-out screenings at the festival.

The second award picked up by the movie was the Best Music Award, which shows that Trinbago’s music is moving further afield beyond the boundaries of the region and continues to not only unify peoples, but also express the love of Trinbagonians through our music.
