Narine: Nothing wrong with Bangladesh batsmen

Sunil Narine struck thrice in two overs in the second ODI. Photo: WICB

West Indies spinner Sunil Narine does not think there is anything wrong with the Bangladesh batsmen and has said West Indies are only taking advantage of home conditions. Narine said he has tried to keep his spells as simple as possible, but tell that to the Bangladesh batsmen. Despite dominating him in Tests less than two years ago, they now find his deception unfathomable and are facing the danger of spending all of this tour trying to avoid getting tangled by him.

His three-wicket burst in the middle of Bangladesh’s 248-run chase in the second ODI sucked the life out of their batsmen. Narine removed Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah in successive deliveries before picking up Sohag Gazi in his next over as the visitors were bowled out for just 70. “I don’t think I have done anything differently [than in the past],” Narine said. “Whatever I have been doing in the past two to three years that have given me success, I have tried to keep it simple as possible. You sometimes tend to try to do too many things and forget what was working for you.”

In the 2012 Test series, Narine went wicketless in three out of four innings, and conceded 343 runs in two matches at an economy-rate of 4.36. Shakib Al Hasan apparently had come up with the plan to go after him from the start. That plan is possibly back in Dhaka right now, as Bangladesh have played Narine without much purpose. He, however, felt that West Indies were taking advantage of familiar conditions. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the Bangladesh batsmen. They are very capable. I think it is just our time to be on top of the game. We have had some rough times in Bangladesh where they have home advantage. “Now we have the home advantage. We are continuing what we are doing and trying to build momentum ahead of the Test matches. I wouldn’t think they are rusty. The wickets are not as flat as Bangladeshi wickets, it is more giving. Their bowlers have something to work with. You need to set a foundation and work on it.” (Cricinfo)

Had honest discussion after first ODI—Bravo

Dwayne Bravo, the West Indies ODI captain, has said the team had an “honest” discussion after the first one-dayer, and was pleased it had translated into a dominating performance in the second match. West Indies had collapsed to 34 for five chasing 218 in the first game, with Denesh Ramdin and Kieron Pollard bailing them out with an attacking 145-run sixth-wicket partnership.

“After the last game, there was some harsh words said in the dressing room amongst ourselves, there were honest discussions, and it is good to see that we had a better all-round performance,” Bravo said. “It shows that the team is growing in confidence and I am very happy how the batters bounced back. (Chris) Gayle is among the runs, Darren (Bravo) as well, Ramdin and Pollard, all chipped in.

“We want to get the balance right and let the players express themselves. In the past we were bit hesitant to be free, but Stuart Williams and the management team give the team the freedom to go out there and express themselves.”

While Bravo praised his bowlers who destroyed Bangladesh for 70 in 24.4 overs, he asked for improvement from the batsmen. “We lost our way in the middle, we could have got 280 to 290 but that’s what myself and the coach have to address.”

West Indies clinch series as Bangladesh skittle out for 70
Associated Press | St. George's | August 24, 2014 9:05 am

SUMMARY
Bangladesh’s run chase faltered early when Holder removed the first ODI century-maker Anamul Haque for 7.

Sunil Narine took 3/13 and Kemar Roach grabbed 3/19 as West Indies dismissed Bangladesh for only 70 to complete a 177-run victory in the second one-day international. Only Tamim Iqbal (37) reached double figures for the visitors. It was Bangladesh’s third lowest total. West Indies clinched the three-match series by taking a 2-0 lead.

Earlier, West Indies scored 247/7 after half centuries by Chris Gayle and Darren Bravo. There were  contributions from Lendl Simmons (40), Denesh Ramdin (34) and Kieron Pollard (26).
Mashrafe Mortaza led Bangladesh with 3/39, his tally taking him past Shakib-al-Hasan as the second most prolific wicket-taker for his country in ODIs. Al-Amin Hossain took 2/60. The 24-year-old ripped out the off stump of Kirk Edwards (0) at 5-1 in the second . Gayle and Bravo shared a second wicket stand of 88 to rally the hosts.
When Gayle holed out to deep midwicket off Mahmudullah’s off spin, Bravo forged another solid partnership of 51 with Ramdin. Bravo was eventually lbw to Sohag Gazi’s off spin and, when Ramdin edged Al-Amin through to wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim, the innings was at the crossroads at 171/4 in the 40th over.

Simmons labored for 61 deliveries for his 40 but Pollard, fresh from his man of the match 89 in the first ODI, hit 26 off 20 to energize the hosts.
Bangladesh’s run chase faltered early when Holder removed the first ODI century-maker Anamul Haque for 7. Roach and Rampaul further dented the pursuit as Imrul Kayes (1) top-edged to deep backward square leg and Shamsur Rahman (4) was bowled.

Narine claimed captain Mushfiqur Rahim (6) and Mahmudullah (0) off successive deliveries. Those Narine wickets sparked a collapse in which the last seven wickets tumbled for 13 runs with Bangladesh going from 57/3 to 70 all out. Roach eventually removed Tamim to a chipped catch to midwicket.

Brief scores: West Indies 247/7 (C Gayle 58, D Bravo 53, L Simmons 40; M Mortaza 3/39) bt Bangladesh 70 in 24.4 overs (T Iqbal 37; S Narine 3/13, K Roach 3/19, R Rampaul 2/21) by 177 runs.

BCB to interrogate Tigers
→ Sports Reporter

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) cricket operations committee chairman Akram Khan informed to the media on Sunday that Bangladesh National Cricket Team will have to show reasons for their poor cricket.

Bangladesh failed to break their losing streak during their Caribbean mission. They went down in a humiliating 177-run loss to West Indies in the second ODI. Bangladesh have been winless throughout this year. West Indies have already sealed the three-match ODI series by 2-0. Tigers have to play one more ODI against the hosts today.

Former national cricketers and cricket specialists are also furious over ongoing performance of Tigers.

“It is now time to repair Bangladesh Cricket team. BCB should set a platform for young cricketers. Cricketers have to play consistence cricket,” several cricket personalities and specialists said.

“Coaching staffs and BCB selectors will also have to face BCB’s interrogation after the series. In addition, BCB will discuss whether they will continue Mushfiqur Rahim’s captaincy for the next series during the meeting,” said Akram Khan.

No one fought or showed desire: Mushfiqur
→ Internet

Mushfiqur Rahim, the Bangladesh captain, has said that his batsmen hardly made an effort as they went down in a humiliating 177-run loss to West Indies in the second ODI. He questioned the team’s ability to fight or will to win after they were involved in yet another collapse, losing their last seven wickets for 13 runs to be dismissed for 70. It was their biggest loss to West Indies in ODIs, and their second-lowest one-day total after being twice bowled out for 58 in the last three years.

“None of them even tried,” Mushfiqur said of his team-mates. “Everyone feels guilty when they play badly, but if they had been a bit more inspired to play for the country, it would have got us closer to the target and given us some confidence going into the next game.”

“Nobody batted with responsibility. I don’t think anyone among the eleven players fought, showed pride to play for the country or showed a deep desire to win. The shameful loss is a result of this.”

“We have played in St Kitts before,” Mushfiqur said. “The wicket is flat and the ground is comparatively smaller. But wherever you play, you have to do the job properly.”

WI GO FOR SWEEP
Russell added to squad for final ODI

Story Created: Aug 24, 2014 at 10:51 PM ECT
Express

West Indies will be going for a clean sweep in when they face Bangladesh in the third and final match of the Dhaka Bank Cup One-Day International (ODI) series which will be a day/night affair bowling off at 2:30 p.m. at Warner Park in St Kitts.

Despite victories in the first two matches, the home team have opted to strengthen their batting with the addition of all-rounder Andre Russell to the line-up.
Russell’s addition pushes the squad to 14 and is the only change to the unit which contested the opening games in Grenada last week.

The 26-year-old is a lively seamer and a powerful lower order batsman, and is also a brilliant out-fielder. He has played 35 ODIs, the last of which was against New Zealand on the West Indies tour there last January.
The Windies hold an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series after winning the first game by three wickets and the second by 177 runs. However, mystery spinner Sunil Narine remains cautious of the visitors who will be desperate to avoid a 3-0 drubbing.
“I think winning the first two games was great but we have to take the last game seriously,” said Narine. “We have to try to win a series without losing a game, take the last game like it is the first game,” the spinner insisted.

Skipper Dwayne Bravo said that while they are on the verge of a whitewash, that will not be their main motivation when they take the field today.
“Yes we won the series but we want to improve on our last performance and keep improving as a team. If we win next game, it is a whitewash but that is not the main reason we are playing,” said the skipper. “We are building towards the World Cup in 2015 and we are just trying to play as much cricket together as a group and try and win as many games as possible,” he added.

TEAMS

West Indies: Dwayne Bravo (capt.), Darren Bravo, Kirk Edwards, Chris Gayle, Jason Holder, Nikita Miller, Sunil Narine, Kieron Pollard, Denesh Ramdin, Ravi Rampaul,
Kemar Roach, Andre Russell, Darren Sammy, Lendl Simmons.

Bangladesh: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt.), Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Imrul
Kayes, Mominul Haque, Nasir Hossain, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Sohag Gazi, Mashrafe Mortaza, Taskin Ahmed, Al-Amin Hossain, Mithun Ali, Rubel Hossain, Shamsur Rahman.

Russell in as WI go for wash

Jamaican Andre Russell, a recent star in the Limacol Caribbean Premier League T20 tournament, has been added to the West Indies cricket team for the third and final Dhaka Bank Cup limited overs clash against Bangladesh at Warner Park in St Kitts starting at 2.30 pm today.

The West Indies Cricket Board’s (WICB) selection panel added the all rounder to the squad, which means no one from the team which has taken a 2-0 lead in the three-match series has been left out.

The West Indies narrowly won the opening game in St George’s Grenada by three wickets, after at one stage being 34 for five, in pursuit off 218 runs for victory.

They then showed up at the same venue two days later, and completely outplayed the visitors—bowling them out for 70—to claim an emphatic 177-run win.

The venue for today’s match is different. It is the smallest international cricket venue. The pitch here is not as sluggish as the one in Grenada and fans who have been bitten by the CPL bug here, will no doubt pack the 9,000 seater venue for this day/night clash.

Master off-spinner Sunil Narine is hoping that his teammates continue the good work started so far in the series.

“We cannot afford to rest at this point in time. We have won two matches in a row and we have the momentum to go forward. We are not going to rest, we need to win this final match because we have the Test series to take care off after and we want to go into that series confident.

“We recently played T20 cricket in St Kitts so we have experience of the facilities, which is good. We are going to use our knowledge of the ground to benefit us because the opposition would not know much about the conditions there.’

West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo also sounded confident saying: “We have played well in this series. Even in the first game our bowlers were spot on and it was the same in the second match. We as batters, still need to improve and this is yet another chance for us to do that. St Kitts is a good batting surface and once we bat well and give our bowlers something to work with, I can’t see Bangladesh getting the better of us here.”

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim says his team needs a lot of work especially in the batting department.

“We have not looked the part as batsmen in this series so far. We played a warm-up match going into the first game and we have been here for a while, so it is about time that the guys adapt and play good cricket. The West Indies have a very good bowling unit and they will always put us under pressure but we just cannot sit by and allow them to continue to dominate. We have to come out fighting and I believe in my players and I am sure they will be looking to turn things around quickly.”

And it is game time, with Chris Gayle and Lendl Simmons to lead West Indies' charge. Their first challenge will be offspinner Sohag Gazi, with a slip and a deep leg slip

Both teams lined up on either side of the pitch for a minute's silence to pay tribute to former Jamaican umpire Douglas Sang Hue, who died last Friday.

Bangladesh coach Chandika Hathurusingha: "We expected WI to play well at home. For Bangladesh, it is a bit of a challenge coming from sub-continent. There are a lot of positives for us from the first 2 games. Motivation comes from individuals. We batted really well in the first game, so the know what went wrong. At the end of the day, they have to do it in the middle."

Mushfiqur Rahim quotes from the toss: "We also wanted to bat first. The wicket looks very good. We didn't play like a team in the last two games. Hopefully we can stick together as a group.Hopefully our top six batters take the responsibility. We have to restrict them to a modest total and do well to chase it."

Dwayne Bravo quotes from the toss: "It is a ground known for high-scoring games, so we want to take the opportunity to bat 50 overs and score 275-plus. Welook forward to a great bowling performance later in the day."

Ramdin, Bravo centuries flay Bangladesh
The Report by Mohammad Isam
August 25, 2014

West Indies 338 for 7 (Ramdin 169, Bravo 124) beat Banglandesh 247 for 8 (Mushfiqur 72, Tamim 55) by 91 runs

Darren Bravo and Denesh Ramdin put on the highest third-wicket stand in ODIs © AFP

Denesh Ramdin wouldn't have had as much fun on a cricket field as on Monday afternoon at Warner Park. His malevolent 169 was part of the highest third wicket partnership in ODIs with Darren Bravo, who also accumulated a century, and ensured West Indies completed a 3-0 whitewash by 91 runs.

The hosts were catapulted to 338 for 7 in 50 overs, a score that was well out of Bangladesh's reach especially at a time when their batsmen are scraping the bottom of the confidence barrel. But they are due some for bouncing back after such a hiding, making 247 for 8, having lasted their full quota.

Bangladesh were 2 for 2 in the second over and were threatening to sink further, but Tamim Iqbal struck his first international fifty in more than nine months and 18 innings. Mushfiqur Rahim top scored with 72, but since he holed out in the deep the last hopes his team had faded away.

West Indies' bowlers could bide their time thanks to Ramdin and Bravo. The duo clattered 19 sixes, the most by West Indies in an ODI en route to amassing 258 runs for the third wicket, beating the previous record held by Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers by 20 runs. For most of their union, it was hard to see past their bats as they dined on a bowling attack that was at times perfect for big hitting.

Mashrafe Mortaza and Al-Amin Hossain, despite the early promise, barely clocked above 130 kmph while Abdur Razzak, Sohag Gazi and Mahmudullah persisted with shortish darts. With a moderate-sized ground, a flat surface and with a bit of wind behind them, West Indies simply took off.

The early losses of Lendl Simmons and Chris Gayle were forgotten with Ramdin and Bravo using singles to ease the pressure. But there was a change is tactics in the 19th over - 10 runs were taken off it, 19 was smacked in the 22nd over, with Ramdin peppering the crowd behind midwicket and Bravo opting to go straight.

Ramdin, Darren Bravo plunder Tigers

Denesh Ramdin and Darren Bravo scored centuries in the final ODI to put West Indies in a strong position to sweep Bangladesh in the three-match Dhaka Bank Cup series which ended at Warner Park in St Kitts, last night.

Ramdin continued his impressive form with a belligerent 169 while Bravo made 124, as the West Indies plundered a massive 339-7 in their 50 overs.

Up to press time, the visitors, who have already lost the series 2-0, were replying.

A number of records tumbled during the innings and when Ramdin finally left for 169, he had equalled Brian Lara’s score off 169 scored against Sri Lanka at Sharjah. Only Sir Viv Richards’ 189 not out against England and his 181 against Sri Lanka were left standing. Ramdin faced 121 balls and struck 11 sixes and eight fours.

Dwayne Bravo’s decision to take first strike on a very good batting strip appeared to have backfired after both openers, Lendl Simmons and Chris Gayle, fell within the first five overs.

Simmons (6) started with a boundary off the first over but misqued a pull off Mashrafe Mortaza. Gayle (6) played the straightest of straight drives off Al-Amin Hossain, then edged the same bowler for wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim to complete the catch and leave the host 12-2.

Ramdin joined his T&T countryman Bravo and after getting through an initial rough period, the pair blossomed, with the left/right hand combination seeming to upset the Bangladesh bowlers.

Ramdin was first to his half century off 45 balls with three fours and three sixes. Bravo, who took a while longer arrived at his off 68 balls with four fours and three sixes.

After getting to their respective milestones, the two plundered the bowling, much to the delight of the small crowd at the picturesque venue.

They brought up their century stand and then motored past the third wicket partnership record for West Indies against Bangladesh, which stood at 146, which was posted by Ramnaresh Sarwan and Marlon Samuels in 2002.

Next, the pair erased Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke’s highest third wicket partnership of 160 runs at the venue. The Australians compiled that score against South Africa at the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup in 2007.

The punishment continued and the pair were looking for the next record which was the highest ever third wicket partnership for the West Indies in limited overs cricket. That mark stood at 195 unbeaten between Barbadian Gordon Greenidge and Trinidadian Larry Gomes at Worcester against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup.

Beautiful stroke play was the order of the day. Ramdin, with just two runs needed for his century, dabbed Mortaza but the ball fell inches short of Rahim behind the stumps.

Soon after, he got his second ODI hundred off 90 balls with six fours and five sixes. He celebrated with three sixes off the next three balls.

In between Ramdin and Bravo raising their bats, there was still another milestone to be celebrated—the highest total for any wicket for the West Indies overall. They passed Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Carl Hooper’s effort of 226 against South Africa at East London in 1999.

Bravo then brought up his second ODI century off 112 balls with seven fours and six sixes. He and Ramdin added 258 runs before Bravo fell for 124.

Keiron Pollard came and went for 10 but Ramdin continued to hammer the Bangladeshis.

The La Romaine resident reached 150 off 107 deliveries with ten sixes and eight fours.

Ramdin’s Records

West Indies wicket-keeper Denesh Ramdin made a record 169 off 121 balls with eight fours and 11 sixes.

It was the highest score by a West Indian wicket-keeper.

It was his second ODI century and second in four matches—surpassing his 128 against England in March.

It was the highest score for West Indies against Bangladesh—surpassing 126 by Marlon Samuels in 2012.

It was equal third highest score of all-time by a West Indian—Brian Lara 169 vs Sri Lanka in 1995.

Ramdin and Darren Bravo (128) added 258 for the third wicket—a West Indies all-time record for any wicket.

Not sure how to measure the quality of this Windies team seeing Bangladesh is really a weak team. I will wait to see how they fear against better opposition.
