Super50 safe as T&T dollars flow

Local cricket officials are assuring everyone that the future of the Super50 regional tournament is safe for at least the next two years. The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) entered into the three-year agreement with Investec TT, for hosting rights for the regional Super50 tournament. The first year was played at the Queen’s Park Oval earlier this season, with Barbados defeating the Red Force in the finals to claim the title.

Although the tournament was sponsored by Nagico Limited, Investec acting on behalf of the government of T&T, entered into a deal with the WICB and it was agreed that a total of US$1M will be paid per year for hosting the tournament. This deal stretches for a period of three years, making it a US$3M investment. Investec Limited then got four State boards in T&T to come together to fit the bill. The four State boards coming together were the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Trade, Ministry of the Arts and Multiculturalism and Ministry of Energy.

With the second edition due to start in Trinidad on January 3, there was speculation that money owed for the first year by the T&T Government was not paid.  However, WICB director and T&TCB president Azim Bassarath assured regional fans yesterday that all is well and the tournament will be played in T&T for the next two years. According to Bassarath

:”Fifty percent of the money owed for the first year has already been paid and another 25 percent will be paid this coming week. There has also been a promise that the remaining 25 percent of funds will be paid, so there is not reason to panic. The future of the tournament is safe. “I want to thank the government for coming on board to assist West Indies cricket at this very important juncture and to let them know that the money is being well spent.

“The WICB is very happy with the association with Investec and we would like to strengthen this relationship further. The second edition of this popular tournament will be played right here as was previously advertised and we are all looking forward to making it a huge success.”

The regional cricket season will begin in November when for the first time the regional First Class season will get going. The new franchise system will take effect and a total of ten matches will be played. After the first five matches, there will be a break for Christmas and then the Nagico Super50 tournament. After the Nagico Super50, the regional First Class resumes with the final five rounds of matches.

T&T open regional campaign against Barbados

T&T’s Red Force will begin their challenge for the regional title on November 14, with a clash against arch rivals and defending champions Barbados at the Queen’s Park Oval.

A clash against the Leewards at a venue to be announced in the Leeward Islands will follow before they return home for their next two matches against Jamaica and Guyana.

At the end of the fourth round which is on December 8, the cricket takes a break for the Christmas period.

The Nagico tournament follows from January 3 before another six rounds of matches will be played in the second phase.

A winner will be crowned on March 19.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has decided to move away from the double crown format which existed last season.

There were two winners for 2014, as one champion was crowned after the round-robin phase and another was crowned as the champion of the knockout that involved the top four teams from the round robin.

The upcoming season will usher in the franchise system for first-class cricket in the Caribbean and will also see one winner being crowned after the round-robin phase. There will be no knockout for the next season.

In a bid to improve the standard of cricket in the Caribbean, the WICB has adopted a new plan by its cricket operations manager Richard Pybus.

This plan will see an extension to the cricket season and each team will now play a total of ten matches.

Five will be played at home and five away.

SARWAN SURPRISE
Ex-Windies batsman drafted by Red Force

Ramnaresh Sarwan was a surprise pick for Trinidad and Tobago, who were pleased with all of their selections during the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League Player Draft, which took place at the Accra Beach Hotel Ballroom in Barbados, yesterday.

Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB) chairman of selectors Alec Burns and head coach Gus Logie picked the West Indies Test batsman in the second round of the draft after they scooped up all-rounder Akeal Hosein as the first round pick.

Guyana, who had the first pick in the draft, opted for Barbados all-rounder Raymon Reifer, while the other franchises--the Windward Islands, the Leeward Islands, Barbados and Jamaica--stuck with players from their own country.
Allrounder Yannick Ottley, opening batsman Jeremy Solozano and rookie off spinner Bryan Charles were the other T&T selections from the draft, which featured 102 players from across the region. The five T&T draft picks will now join the ten other T&T players who were retained ahead of the draft to make up the 15-member squad for Regional Four-Day and Super50 competitions.

Burns was satisfied that T&T got everyone they wanted including Sarwan who he said was not initially on their radar. “We are anticipating that a lot of players will be away on West Indies duties and we tried to compensate for that. Having seen Sarwan in the draft and knowing our position, we thought it best to include him. We think he still has a lot to offer and we are happy we could acquire his services,” said Burns.
“Under the circumstances, we are satisfied with the selections. A lot of the teams stuck to players from their respective islands and a couple of the teams were expressing some disappointment (after the draft) that they did not get Sarwan. I think someone of his experience will definitely be an asset,” added Burns.

“Charles and Solozano have both represented the West Indies Under-19 and they have a lot of potential and this will give them a good opportunity to develop further,” Burns added. T&T coach Gus Logie was also happy to get Sarwan saying: “We felt having a player of the calibre of Sarwan in our side would be invaluable to our squad which includes a number of young players.”
TTCB CEO Suruj Ragoonath was surprised with the selection of Sarwan but insisted “Logie and Burns are selectors and they have the full backing of the board.”

“They (Burns and Logie) would have looked at the composition of the T&T team and would have noticed in the recent past that the batting has not done so well and they would have felt that Sarwan would bring certain things (to the team) that are not here for us. I am not going to second guess the selectors,” Ragoonath added.

Burns also explained that the other players not selected in the draft like Ravi Rampaul can still play for T&T on a “pay for play” basis when they are available.

Can someone tell me if/why Bahamas,BVI, Turks and Caicos can't form a North Caribbean franchise to play in this tournament. After all they are culturally Caribbean and play cricket. And would be nice for the WI to be more inclusive. ??!! ??
