Highlanders is back. I did not know that. This is great.

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/20150924/features/highlanders-steel-orchestra-gets-security-support

In its bid to assist the youth and communities that are thriving to make a better life for themselves, The Massy Foundation has agreed to the donation of $50,000.00 toward the construction of a building, shed and security perimeter fence for the Highlanders Steel Orchestra located in Success Village, Laventille.

In presenting the cheque to Robert E. Hernandez, secretary of the steel orchestra, Gaston Aguilera, chairman of The Massy Foundation stated: “The foundation is very proud to be part of this great effort to bring stability and security to Highlanders Steel Orchestra.” He went on to state that “Your steelband which has become a vital part of the community serves as a beacon of hope for the youth in Beetham Gardens, Trou Macaque, Prizgar Lands and Success Village Leaventille. This therefore provides great synergy with the Massy Foundation which is geared to providing the relief of poverty, suffering and distress for persons in such communities.”

Hernandez thanked The Massy Foundation for its generosity in assisting the steel orchestra in this material way. “Our goal is to provide a safe and secure environment for our members, players and supporters and your donation convinces us of your unstinting support not only to art and culture but to the development of those individuals who at times feel a sense of hopelessness.”

The panyard has plans to include a music institute where the youth will be provided with opportunities to develop and become productive citizens of Trinidad and Tobago.

As Trinidad and Tobago celebrated 39 years as a Republic nation yesterday, there was one Steel Band that took the opportunity to celebrate its 75 years of existence.

Invaders Steel Orchestra celebrated this major milestone by hosting a Traditional J'ouvert in Woodbrook, and what better day to do it than on a public holiday.

The celebrations kicked off from as early as 5am yesterday.

Pan on the Avenue 4 launched
...to celebrate Stalin, Holly Thomas

http://www.trinidadexpress.com/20150727/features/pan-on-the-avenue-4-launched

Pan on the Avenue 4 was launched on Friday with world-renowned pannist and arranger Robert Greenidge in attendance.

It took place at the home of Cleveland Garcia of the Woodbrook/St James Community Organisation on Wrightson Road, Port of Spain.

Due to the panic in the city as a result of Friday afternoon’s prison break, the formal part of the proceedings was postponed, but press kits with information about the now-annual event were distributed to those members of the media in attendance.

Joining Greenidge was Pan Trinbago’s vice-president, Byron Serrette.

Both men spoke highly of Pan on the Avenue and the strides it has made since its inception four years ago.

Put on by the Woodbrook/St James Community Organisation, Pan on the Avenue 4, 2015, is dedicated to both Black Stalin (Leroy Calliste) and radio station owner and announcer Holly Thomas, who died last year.

Black Stalin suffered a stroke in September 2014 and has been recuperating since. He is celebrated for his steelpan tributes in calypso.

Pan on the Avenue 4 is scheduled for August 22.

Twenty-seven steel orchestras will move along Ariapita Avenue from Taylor Street heading east toward Colville Street, stopping at Adam Smith Square to play a tune of choice.

The Woodbrook/St James Community Organisation will also honour 15 pan tuners on the day.

—Gary Cardinez
