Goran Dragic agrees to 5-year, $90 million deal to stay with Heat

Dragic will indeed remain with the club that traded multiple first-round picks to acquire him in February.

Goran Dragic has agreed to a five-year, $90 million deal to stay with the Miami Heat, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. That is just below a maximum contract for Dragic. He will have a player option after the fourth year.

Dragic was eligible to receive a maximum of 30 percent of the salary cap in his first year, which would come out to around $110 million over five seasons. Instead, he'll take a slight discount, perhaps to help Miami re-sign Dwyane Wade to a comfortable number. Wade opted out after Miami asked him to take less multiple times and is a threat to go elsewhere, but having Dragic in the fold at less than the maximum may convince Wade to return.

Regardless, the Heat are now expected to pay a hefty luxury tax bill if Wade returns, thanks to the large contracts of Chris Bosh, Dragic and Luol Deng.

Dragic has been planning for his free agency since last February, when he asked the Phoenix Suns to trade him to either the Knicks, Lakers or Heat. Pat Riley ended up making the move and Dragic played out the season's final three months in Miami. Dragic had a player option he could have exercised, which would have allowed him to play one more season with Miami under his current contract. Instead he elected to opt out so that he could sign a larger long-term deal this summer.

After being named the NBA's Most Improved Player in 2014, Dragic saw his numbers fall last season following the Phoenix Suns' addition of point guard Isaiah Thomas. Dragic was on the floor for a similar amount of minutes, but was never happy or comfortable with the situation. Dragic's scoring output fell from 20 to 16, though his field goal percentage remained right around 50 percent. Dragic seemed happier in Miami, but he was unable to lead the Heat to the playoffs. Part of that was due to a back injury that kept him out of a few games.

Still, Dragic is the best point guard the Heat have had since Tim Hardaway and re-signing him was a must. He gives them insurance in case Dwayne Wade leaves, or goes down. At this point in their careers, Dragic might actually be the better shot creator. He's a relentless attacker and an adept finisher at the rim. Few players drive to the basket more than Dragic, and he converted on an incredible 55 percent of those drives, according to the NBA.com player tracking data.

With Dragic, 29, now signed, the Heat have a point guard in his prime who they can build a team around. In the lowly East, he also makes them an immediate playoff contender.

Anthony Davis just signed the biggest contract in NBA history, and it's a sign of things to come

The New Orleans Pelicans struck a deal with Anthony Davis as soon as the NBA's free-agency period began at midnight on Wednesday.

With Davis eligible to become a free agent next summer, New Orleans locked him up with a five-year, $145 million extension that starts in the 2016-2017 season.

The $145 million is the largest contract number in NBA history, and Davis' $29 million yearly average would be the highest in the NBA right now.

As Grantland's Zach Lowe mentions, Davis' max starts in 2016-2017 and is based on the projected 2016-2017 salary cap of $89 million. Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski notes that Davis qualifies for a max contract exception in which he can get 30% of the salary cap (usually reserved for players with seven to nine years of service) instead of the usual 25% if he starts in next year's All-Star Game or makes an All-NBA team, which is highly likely. Thus, despite being in only his fifth year when the extension starts, Davis will be paid more than most of his peers.

Davis' reign at the top of the NBA could be temporary, however, because the NBA's rising salary cap will create bigger, wilder contracts than ever seen in the league.

In one year, Davis could be topped by other top free agents with more NBA experience. Players who have been in the NBA for 10 or more years can earn 35% of the cap, so within one year, the top free agents could see deals similar to or bigger than Davis'.

LeBron James will keep signing one-year deals until the Cavs have his Bird Rights and can offer him a max contract with 7.5% raises. As Business Insider's Tony Manfred noted, by 2017 LeBron could sign a five-year, $204 million deal.

LaMarcus Aldridge has similar motivation to sign a short deal this summer. Next year will be his 10th season, so by 2016, if Aldridge wants to hit free agency again, he could sign a four-year, $145 million contract with another team.

The summer of 2017 could be even crazier, when the salary cap is expected to be $108 million. A player with 10 years of service eligible for 35% of the cap would have a starting salary of $38 million!

Such is life in the NBA's the new cap environment, where max contracts nearing or topping $150 million could become a regular sighting.

Dwayne Wade Stays With Miami Heat
AP  |  By TIM REYNOLDS

MIAMI (AP) — Dwyane Wade is staying with the Miami Heat.

Wade informed the Heat on Thursday that he will accept their one-year offer to re-sign for $20 million for next season, said a person familiar with the negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no NBA deals can be finalized this summer until July 9.

The decision ends a weeks-long, sometimes-contentious saga between the Heat and their franchise player. Wade was open to the idea of leaving Miami over a contract dispute, moreso than ever before.

But in the end, the three-time champion and the only team for whom he's played worked out a deal that conceivably could mean he will finish his career in Miami.

An 11-time All-Star, Wade averaged 21.5 points this past season.

"It has been an honor and privilege to play with the Miami Heat the past 12 years," Wade said in a statement first released to AP. "The Heat family and I have shared incredible moments over the years and I look forward to continuing our journey. I am extremely proud of my personal contributions in helping to build the Heat franchise and for bringing three NBA championship wins to our great city."

Wade could have made $16.1 million this season on the second year of a two-year deal, but opted out with hopes of getting a longer-term, more-lucrative contract.

For now, the more-lucrative part was enough to appease Miami's all-time leading scorer.

"For my entire NBA career, Miami has always been my city and my home," Wade said. "I'm overwhelmed with the love and support the Miami community have consistently shown me and my family throughout the years."

This was Wade's third foray into free agency in the last five years, and this one seemed the most dicey of all.

From talk of an impasse between the sides several weeks before free agency even began, to social-media over analysis of Wade speaking of Miami in the past tense in his role as a television analyst during the NBA Finals and even the widespread perception that a recent image of his father wearing a Cleveland Cavaliers shirt was a sign of a looming Heat departure, it has seemed like a most tenuous time.

All the angst was for naught.

Wade considered other teams — the Los Angeles Lakers, in particular — but lure of staying home was ultimately too strong.

"This contract is a win-win for both Dwyane and the Heat," Wade's agent, Henry Thomas, said. "Not only does Dwyane get to extend his Hall of Fame-worthy career with the only franchise for whom he has ever played, but he will have the flexibility next summer to sign an additional deal.

"And the Heat gets to keep their franchise cornerstone while having the ability to build a championship-contending roster."

LaMarcus Aldridge picks the San Antonio

Prized free agent LaMarcus Aldridge says he has chosen to join the San Antonio Spurs.

Aldridge tweeted the news on Saturday after spending a week meeting with teams as the most coveted player on the market. Aldridge spent his previous nine seasons in Portland, but is leaving for a four-year maximum contract with the Spurs.

He averaged a career-high 23.8 points per game for the Trail Blazers last season.

The Dallas native says on Twitter, “I’m happy to say I’m going home to Texas and will be a Spur!! I’m excited to join the team and be close to my family and friends.”

Aldridge was also courted by the Lakers, Rockets, Heat, Mavericks, Knicks and Raptors. But he ultimately chose to join Tim Duncan, coach Gregg Popovich and the Spurs in his home state of Texas

DeAndre Jordan Re-Signed with the Clippers, and Mark Cuban is Pissed
By Jason McIntyre

DeAndre Jordan is staying with the Clippers – despite what he told the Mavericks a week ago – and here’s a dark photo from Paul Pierce of the center signing the extension.

Mark Cuban, the Dallas owner, was allegedly driving around Houston Wednesday night, desperately trying to find Jordan’s house, but couldn’t. It may not have mattered, anyway – the Clippers contingent led by Doc Rivers and Chris Paul wouldn’t have let Cuban in the door.

Obviously, this decision has massive ramifications in the West. Are the Mavericks a playoff team? Just how good are the Clippers? They reached the Western Conference semifinals – blowing a 3-1 lead to the Rockets – and have added Paul Pierce and Lance Stephenson while losing just one rotation player (Matt Barnes) so far.

Jamal Crawford is rumored to be close to signing with the Cavaliers.

Even with him, the Clippers aren’t better than the Warriors, Thunder and Spurs.

The Dallas Mavericks had their $80 million free agent stolen out from under them, and it's a disaster

(Mark Duncan/AP) Mark Cuban is undoubtedly baffled by DeAndre Jordan's decision to spurn the Mavs.

At the tail-end of the NBA's free agency period, DeAndre Jordan created the biggest mess of the summer.

After reportedly agreeing to a four-year, $80 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks, on the eve of the NBA's official signing period Jordan had second thoughts and held a meeting with the Clippers to discuss re-signing.

It created an all-out recruiting war, with both Mavs and Clippers coaches, players, and owners traveling to Houston to convince Jordan to sign with them.

Jordan froze out the Mavs and his agent while he met with the Clippers at his home, eventually deciding to re-sign with L.A. for a reported five years, $88 million.

For the Mavericks, this is a total disaster. After a free agency that saw them land Jordan and Wesley Matthews, the Mavericks looked like fringe contenders in the Western Conference.

Instead, the Mavs lost their biggest signing, but it's just one part of a bigger ripple effect.

In chasing Jordan, the Mavericks let go of Tyson Chandler, a valuable center who has a similar skill set as Jordan's but is a few years older. Jordan would have been an upgrade, but without him, the Mavs have a giant hole at center.

The Mavs have salary cap space again now that Jordan is out, but most of the NBA's top free agents have already agreed to contracts with teams. Omer Asik got $60 million from the Pelicans, Robin Lopez got $54 million from the Knicks, Chandler got $52 million from the Suns, and Kosta Koufos got $33 million from the Kings.

Additionally, the Wesley Matthews signing looks riskier by the moment. Matthews was one of the top wing players the last two seasons, but tore his achilles last season. Though Matthews is reportedly already on his feet, practicing on his own, achilles tears have been historically harmful to players' careers.

The Mavericks traded backup center Brandan Wright last year for Rajon Rondo, along with their 2016 first-round pick (top-seven protected). For a team that now looks like they'll miss the playoffs, they might not have a draft pick as a reward for their losing, and it would be unwise to trade future picks for a player now when they might be entering a rebuilding mode when those picks become more valuable.

The Mavericks couldn't have seen this coming so they can't be faulted for being iced out by Jordan at the last second. Nonetheless, they fall from an intriguing playoff contender to a shallow team without backup options.

Chris Copeland

MILWAUKEE — The Bucks have signed free agent forward Chris Copeland, adding veteran depth to their young frontcourt.

General manager John Hammond did not announce terms of the deal on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-8 Copeland played the last two seasons in Indiana, averaging 6.2 points and 2.2 rebounds in 50 games in 2014-15.

Undrafted out of Colorado in 2006, Copeland played overseas and in the NBA’s D-League before breaking into the NBA with the Knicks in 2012-13. Bucks coach Jason Kidd was Copeland’s teammate on that Knicks team.

While with the Pacers, Copeland was stabbed in the elbow and abdomen outside a New York nightclub early in the morning of April 8. He has apologized for being out so late on a game night.

If Cavs can keep most of their same team from last season they will have a good shot at winning the title. Their main problem last season was multiple injuries to different top players throughout the season (including the playoffs)
