Both policy and criteria will be used as a basis for team selection.
1) The Selection Committee shall only have regard to athletes’ performances that are properly verified and recorded by the Records Committee/Statisticians of the Association. The following relevant information of the performances must be forwarded.
The date of the competition
The weather conditions
The place of competition and the type of track surface
The method of timekeeping used
Wind Gauge readings where appropriate
The date of birth of the athlete if in specific age group events.
In furnishing information to the selectors the Records Committee/Statistician should provide them with performance data from overseas, if the information appears in journals recognized by the Association of Track and Field Statisticians, or the information relevant to such performers are verified by the controlling body of the meeting.
Clubs/Schools are asked to ensure that wind gauges and electronic photo are available and used at all meetings where athletes are likely to be considered for National Teams, if available video recording should be used to record performances.
2) Except where a selection trial is held for selection and the particular selection criteria for the team states otherwise, no one performance or place in a particular event or competition, shall result in an athlete gaining automatic selection as a member of a team.
3) To be selected in any Trinidad and Tobago team to major competitions, it is a requirement that the athlete will have participated in the following competitions:
a. TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO CHAMPIONSHIP relevant to the intended competition (unless an exemption is granted for not competing -
b. Other meeting designated by the National Selectors.
4) During the period between the announcement of the team and the date of departure, athletes must demonstrate that they are physically fit, be performing well and likely to compete at a level appropriate to the competition(s) for which they have been selected.
During this time, assessment shall be made from time to time as to the athlete’s standard of fitness, and their preparation for the event. Such assessment shall be directed and under the control of the team Management in conjunction with the Selectors. If as a result
of such assessment, the athlete is not deemed to be at a level required to retain their place in a selected team, the Manager shall immediately notify the Chairman of Selections who
will then confer with the selectors on the athletes’ position in such a team.
5) Where a designated trial is to be conducted immediately prior to the announcement of the team, all athletes wishing to be selected must compete in such a trial in the events for which they wish to be selected, unless they have an unusual and acceptable exemption agreed by the Executive. Exemption will usually only be grated where the athlete is in university overseas or has a medical reason for not competing, or has a special compassionate reason. The athlete may be required to undergo a medical examination
with a medical officer nominated by the Association.
6) An athlete who resides outside of Trinidad and Tobago who wishes to be selected in a Trinidad and Tobago team must provide to the selection panel through the Secretary, performances verified by the controlling body under whose jurisdiction the performances
were made.
7) OLYMPIC GAMES, COMMONWEALTH GAMES & WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, PAN AM GAMES AND CAC GAMES.a) In the year preceding each of the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and World Championships, the Association shall release, graded performance target guidelines, by which the quality of an athlete’s performance may be considered by the selection panel during a set qualifying period. These performance target guidelines will be set taking into account the standards set by the IAAF; and after
consultation with appropriate organizations that have a vested interest in the teams. The selection panel will monitor a close watch of statistics for likely performance level at the event.
b) No Wind-aided performances will be considered. Particular regard shall be paid to standards attained in meetings such as the Trinidad and Tobago Championship and other designated meetings or trials.
c) At the time of releasing the performance target guidelines, an indication will be given on the probable date for announcing the team.
d) Where more athletes better the performance target guidelines in an event than entry places. (i.e. 3 for World Championship and Olympic and 2 for other events)
The selectors may use the placing at the Trial or Championship to name the athletes who will compete.
e) Athletes must meet the basic International event entry standards for the specific
events, before consideration is given to other selection criteria relative to the Association’s performance target guidelines.
8) INTERNATIONAL TEAMSWhen an invitation is received by the Association for a specific number of athletes to compete overseas or for an athlete or athletes to compete in a particular event, the Association shall refer the invitation to the selection panel.
9) TEAM EVENTSIf in the opinion of the selection panel, the overall standard of available athletes does not warrant a team being selected, any athletes who have achieved automatic selection in accordance with; the published criteria will be notified, If after the date of selection of
any team for a team event, withdrawals for any reason; make a team uncompetitive or incomplete, and suitable replacements cannot be found by the selection panel, the team may by withdrawn and the selected athletes notified. If the organizers of the competition
permit individuals to be entered, the selection panel may nominate suitably qualified individuals.
10) TRACK RELAY TEAMSTeams may only be selected where the selection panel is of the opinion that at least five available athletes are of the standard required. Six athletes may in general be selected for each relay team. Where practicable, a training squad should be selected as far as in advance as is possible. Commitment to the squad will be an important factor in final selection.
The relay pool may comprise the following athletes:
• 4x100m – top two finishers in the 100m, with the other four places coming from the top finishers in the 200m, sprint hurdles and horizontal jumps who may not have competed in the 100m.
• 4x400m - top two finishers in the 400m, with the other four places coming from the top finishers in the 200m 800m and 400m hurdles who may not have competed in the 400m.
11) Any athlete seeking, or having achieved selection, must keep the Associations Secretary informed at all times of their contact address, telephone numbers and email addresses.
Any changes to these details, particularly if traveling overseas, must be advised immediately.
12) Athletes must compete in the events for which they have been selected.

NAAA SELECTION CRITERIA1. Athletes will be selected on merit on the basis that they will perform with at the Championship for athletes to be considered, their qualifying performances should be achieved within the IAAF time period above, but with strong back-up performances in the period…2-3 months prior to the competition.
2. Must have participated in the
Relevant Area Championship of the given year.CONDITIONS FOR SELECTION TO NATIONAL TEAMSSigning of Conditions for Selection to National Teams: Athletes are required to sign the “Conditions for Selection Agreement” provided by the Association as a condition for selection to a national team. All athletes seeking selection on national teams should ensure that they have valid travel documents which will enable them to leave and return to their country of residence.
Travel Tickets: The NAAA’s will provide selected athletes with return economy class airline tickets by the most direct route from their usual place of residence and or ground transportation to the site of the competition at the best affordable economy fare available to the Association. Where athletes elect to purchase their own tickets, refunds will be made on the basis of the cost of a ticket which could have been purchased by the Association as mentioned above. Where athletes elect to purchase their own tickets, they should seek to book their travel within adequate time and seek to obtain the lowest
possible fares available.
Travel Itinerary: Athletes should provide details of their travel itinerary to the Association’s secretariat for ticketing to be done immediately upon notification of selection. If any changes are requested by the athlete, he/she will be responsible for the cost of changes.
Visa & Passport: The Association will assist athletes with applications for any necessary visas to enter the country where the competition is to take place. While the Association may give some assistance with applications for Trinidad and Tobago passports, it is the athletes’ responsibility to apply and obtain passports.
Dress Code: The Association’s sponsor provides competition gear for all teams. Where these are provided they must be worn during the competition (these include competition clothing and foot wear). For award ceremonies, the suit provided for such ceremonies must be worn. Where the Association provides training gear, this must be used during training sessions. Athletes are not allowed to use any other uniform supplier products or non-athletic branded items during medal presentations, special events or competition.
Casual Wear: The Association’s sponsor provides casual wear for traveling, competition days and special events. Team members should be properly attired at all times unless otherwise informed of a change. In all instances whether wearing the provided national uniform gear or casual wear, all athletes are expected to maintain a dress and grooming standard that would present them in a positive and appealing fashion.
Team members should not wear clothing that advertises a manufacturer that competes with the Association’s sponsor when taking team photographs, media appearances, participating in team activities or representing the team.
