CALYPSONIAN ‘Skatie (Carlos John) is out of the semi-finals of the 2016 National Calypso Monarch Competition after it was revealed that he failed to pay the TT $100 registration fee.

Speaking with Newsday late yesterday afternoon, president of the Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation (TUCO), Lutalo “Brother Resistance” Masimba, said “Skatie was given a hearing at about 11.30 this morning”, at TUCO’s headquarters, Jerningham Avenue, Belmont.

“There was no argument.

It was a simple and straightforward meeting during which the Council asked (John) to produce a receipt showing he had paid the $100 fee, which entitles a person to enter all TUCO competitions,” Masima stated. He also told Newsday that a memo was sent out to all TUCO members last December, reminding them to ensure they are in good financial standing, and of the $100 registration fee which had to be paid prior to the pre-liminary round earlier this month.

John was unable to prove that he had registered for the 2016 National Calypso Monarch competition, and was therefore declared invalid and void of the competition.

Now that “Skatie” will no longer be one of the 40 calypsonians peforming in Calypso Fiesta at Skinner Park, San Fernando this Saturday, First Reserve contestant Joanne Foster has taken his place in the semi-final round of the competition.

FOUR time Junior Calypso Monarch, Aaron Duncan, will be attempting to secure his fifth win on February 1 with an anti- bullying composition. He has promised to give fans “a bang” of a performance. Duncan was one of 16 finalists for which positions were drawn yesterday at City Hall Auditorium, Port-of- Spain. The 12 year-old Queen’s Royal College student pulled position number one, and he informed Newsday it will be his first time singing at that position.

“I just have to hope for the best.

I could make history as number one,” he said. Duncan won in 2010 at the tender age of six, completed a hat-trick with consecutive wins in 2011 and 2012. In 2013 Marq Pierre took the crown and in 2014 Ronaldo London was the winner; London will be performing at position nine in the finals next week.

Duncan dethroned London in 2015, and was crowned monarch for the fourth time with his song “Grammy Awards” which paid homage to the art form of calypso.

At last year’s competition Deslie Julien and Sharissa Camejo placed second and third respectively and both will be seeking to dethrone Duncan at the finals next week.

On his possible fifth win Duncan said yesterday “I just put my hope in the Almighty and wish for the best”. He reported that his preparation was “going great” and he was waiting on the finals “to let the judges be the judges”. Duncan’s composition for the finals is “The Nation’s Future”, an anti-bullying song. He noted that the issue of anti-bullying has been a passion for him.

On what fans can look forward to from his performance in the finals Duncan responded he will being coming with a bang. “I’m just coming out to do my best, see what I can do and hopefully come out with the win. With number one,” he said. The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians’ Organisation Junior Calypso Monarch finals will be held on February 1 at the Queen’s Park Savannah.

The Holy Name Convent pupil moved the audience and the judges gathered at the Queen's Park Savannah, Port of Spain, with her song “Our Blessed Land” yesterday.

Speaking with reporters after being announced the winner, Camejo said: “After all these years of coming second and third, I have finally done it. All of my hard work has paid off.”

The elated pupil says she now has no doubts about going forward with calypso and expressed interest in moving from Junior Calypso to the big league of Calypso Monarch one day.

Duane Ta'zyah O'Connor of St Mary's College placed second with his performance of "Dear Doctor".
