Khalifa St Fort will lead the charge for Trinidad and Tobago at the March 26-28 Carifta Games, in Grenada. The 2015 World Youth Championship girls’ 100 metres silver medallist is among 42 athletes selected for national duty on Easter weekend.

St Fort captured the Girls Under-20 sprint double at the Carifta trials, held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain on the weekend.

The Florida-based sprinter is expected to face the starter in both the 100m and 200m events in Grenada. St Fort’s training partner, Sarah Wollaston is listed for the Under-20 100m at Carifta 2016. St Fort and Wollaston will also be on show in the 4x100m relay.

Tyriq Horsford will defend his boys’ under-18 javelin title in Grenada. On the weekend, he threw 71.52 metres to better the 70.73m national youth record he had established in winning gold at the 2015 Carifta Games. That 70.73m throw is also a Carifta Games record, and the 16-year-old Tobago thrower would be looking to improve on the regional standard when he competes at the 2016 edition of the regional junior championships.

Akanni Hislop captured the Carifta Games boys’ under-18 200m title in 2015, but is stepping up to the under-20 age-group this year. He is the lone boys’ under-20 sprinter selected.

Also on the T&T team are sprinters Adell Colthrust and Tyrell Edwards, long jumper Che Richards, hurdler Jeminise Parris, and thrower Chelsea James.

All athletes, their parents and team officials are asked to attend an important meeting tomorrow (Friday), at the VIP Lounge of the Hasely Crawford Stadium. Starting time is 4pm. Athletes must walk with their passports and two passport photos.

St Fort, Horsford, Hislop in TT Carifta team
By CLAYTON CLARKE Thursday, March 10 2016 (T&T Newsday)

Khaifa St Fort, Tyriq Horsford & Akanni Hislop; Star TTO athletes selected for 2016 CARIFTA Games.

World Youth silver/World Senior bronze medallist Khalifa St Fort (Unattached) was named in a 42-member team for the 45th Carifta track and field Games set for St Georges, Grenada from March 26-28.

The team includes two defending champions, two former gold medallists and nine previous medallists and was named via a press release by the National Association of Athletics Administration (NAAA) on Tuesday following the NGC/NAAA Carifta Trials at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on the weekend.

St Fort was named for the girls under 20 100m and 200m following her victories in both events at the trials where she clocked 11.39 and 23.64 respectively. Her training partner Sarah Wollaston has been selected for the 100m despite missing the qualifying 11.80 standard. St Fort and Wollaston are among seven girls in the under 20 division.

Renee Stoddard (Speed Factory) got the nod for the 400m as she matched the 55.30 standard at the trials. Stoddard is also listed to compete in the 200m. Former Carifta champion Jeminise Parris (Memphis Pioneers) will be this country’s representative in the 100m hurdles and 400m hurdles.

St Fort, Wollaston, Stoddard and Parris have also been named for the 4x100m team.

Three-time Carifta champion Chelsea James (Tobago Falcons) will contest the girls shot put and discus. Shiann Charles (D’Abadie Progressive) will be among the starters in the discus.

Defending gold medallist and record holder Tyriq Horsford (Zenith) is among 15 boys in the Under-18 category picked to make the trip to Grenada.

Horsford will be going for a second straight gold in the boys under 18 javelin after his national youth record throw of 71.52m at the trials. His performance was superior to his Carifta record effort of 70.73 set in taking the 2015 title. Horsford’s fellow Tobagonians Konnel Jacob (Tobago Jaguars) and Clarence Hannibal (Tobago Falcons) will contest the shot put and discus. Last year’s long jump bronze medallist Clement Campbell (Memphis Pioneers) has been picked for the triple jump as he was only third in long jump behind Josiah Edwards (Abilene Wildcats) and Aaron Cruickshank (D’Abadie Progressive) both of whom will contest the long jump. Adel Colthrust (Abilene Wildcats) and Tyrel Edwards (Toco Titans), 4x100m medallists in 2014 and 2015 respectively, are TT’s choices for the 100m.

NAAA president Ephraim Serrette said the NAAA selected a 42-member team “based on the current economic climate we are in. Carifta (Games) continue to be one of our biggest spend and we need to see returns on that and have selected a smaller team.” Commenting on only one sprinter (Akanni Hislop) selected in the under 20 division and that no 4x100m or 4x400m teams were named, he explained “if there are not qualifiers (in the individual events) it does not warrant sending a team.” He added that there is need to work with the country’s sprinters “in the same way as we have a jumps and throws programme maybe the time has come where we have to work with our sprinters as well.” He was in praise, however, of the performance of the heptathlon and octathlon) athletes.

Serrette admitted though that he was expecting better overall performances at the trials. “I am disappointed. Athletes had seven Development Meets to attain the standards, not just at the trials.

If we had athletes who were just outside the standards we could have looked at their progression in the development meets and say where they warrant that (being selected).” He also added that there is also need for hurdles programme.

“We still have this notion in that everyone in TT feel they are sprinters. We have a sprinter who can manage 10.5 or 10.6 and we can teach him to hurdle I think that is the way we have to go,” he stressed.

He's right in that regard. The slower sprinters should be trying their hand at hurdles so we need to have a program for both. The under 20 girls with the exception of Khalifa and Sarah (had she not have stumbled) can't break 12... Again with the exception of Khalifa don't run the 200m well in both age groups.

We need a program for the sprints and hurdles.

If you examine the T&T CARIFTA Team list more carefully you will realise that Jacob St Clair was not selected due to not attaining the 400m U-20 CARIFTA Standard in his CARIFTA Trials 400m Final.

45th Annual CARIFTA Games 2016 - Grenada

This year the Carifta Games are being held in Grenada at the Grenada National Athletic Stadium, Queens Park, St George's from the 26th - 28th March.

The CARIFTA Games is an annual athletics competition founded by the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA). Only countries associated with CARIFTA may compete in the competition, i.e. Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Jamaica, Montserrat and Belize.
The games was first held in 1972 and consists of track and field events including sprint races, hurdles, middle distance track events, jumping and throwing events, and relays. The Games has two age categories: under-18 and under-20. Only countries associated with CARIFTA may compete in the competition.

History

In 1972, Austin Sealy, then president of the Amateur Athletic Association of Barbados, inaugurated the CARIFTA Games to mark the transition from the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). CARIFTA was meant to enhance relations between the English-speaking countries of the Caribbean after the dissolution of the West Indies Federation, but the CARIFTA Games took that idea a step further, including the French and Dutch Antilles in an annual junior track and field championship meet.

The meet normally runs over three days during the Easter period and includes over 150 separate events. The Games has two age categories for boys and girls: under-17 and under-20, the latter in line with the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) guidelines for junior athletes. The meet is run entirely under IAAF rules.

According to ex-IAAF President, Lamine Diack, CARIFTA is "on par with the World Championships."The meet is considered one of the best development meets in world athletics. Having started out on grass tracks, with athletes staying in schools or other similar temporary shelter, the CARIFTA Games have come a long way. College and university coaches and scouts from the United States make their way to the Games each year, in a bid to identify up-and-coming athletes.

The Games have produced World Record holders, Usain Bolt, Darrel Brown, World and Olympic Champions such as Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica, Kim Collins of St Kitts-Nevis and Pauline Davis-Thompson of the Bahamas, Alleyne Francique of Grenada and Obadele Thompson of Barbados. CARIFTA has spawned administrators like Dean Greenaway, President of the British Virgin Islands Athletics Association.

In the early years, a handful of territories (Barbados, Trinidad & Tobago, Bahamas, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Bermuda) had facilities appropriate for hosting what really is a world-class meet. Since 2000, though, Grenada, Turks & Caicos, St Kitts-Nevis and St Lucia have built brand new stadia and hosted the CARIFTA Games. The Games have also been held on Tobago and in Montego Bay, Jamaica, which became the 14th different venue in 2011.

The CARIFTA Games are normally sponsored by regional companies including the National Gas Company of Trinidad & Tobago Ltd and Guardian Holdings. In 2009, telecommunications company, LIME Caribbean signed on as a presenting sponsor, providing finance to the local organising committee, direct assistance to national teams and live coverage of the Games on TV across the Caribbean, as well as via Internet streaming.

The Games are hosted directly under the auspices of the North and Central American and Caribbean Confederation of the IAAF, more commonly known as NACAC. Each country may enter two athletes per event and up to six athletes may be entered for relay events (with two acting as substitutes) and three athletes in the combined events such as pentathlon or heptathlon.

The 100 and 200 metres World and Olympic record holder Usain Bolt holds the 200m metres record in the under 20 category and the 400m in the under 17 category. He previously had both under 17 and under 20 200m and 400m records but lost his 200m under 17 record in 2007 to fellow Jamaican Dexter Lee who would go on to win consecutive 100 m World Junior titles. Bolt lost the 400m under 20 record to World Youth silver medalist and World Junior Champion Kirani James of Grenada. Kirani reset the 400m record in Cayman Islands in 2010, at which venue Jamaica's Odane Skeen also established a new under-17 record for the 200m.

CARIFTA Games Records Summary

Jamaica has dominated the medals table at CARIFTA over the years. So too the record books. They hold records in 10 of the 21 Under-20 men's events contested all-time at CARIFTA, and hold or share 11 of the 17 Under-20 women's records. At the junior level, Jamaican boys own nine of the 17 records, whilst their girls possess a remarkable 10 of 16 marks in the Under-17 division. The oldest CARIFTA record in the books, though (at least for events still being contested in the modern Games), belongs to a Bermudan, Sonya Smith, whose Under-20 Javelin Throw performance of 53.98m has been on the books since 1979. The oldest boys' record is 15.03m, the winning distance for Lyndon Sands of the Bahamas in the 1980 Under-17 Triple Jump.

Kareem Streete-Thompson went on to become one of the world's leading horizontal jumpers, but his CARIFTA performances have earned legendary status. In 1989, he set an Under-17 Long Jump record with a leap of 7.83m, and a year later his 7.94m was an Under-20 record, in his first year competing at that level for Cayman Islands. Both marks remain untouched. The women's horizontal jump records are almost as long-lived, Jackie Edwards' 1987 mark of 6.14m was the Under-17 winning distance that year, and Daphne Saunders' leap of 6.93m won her the 1989 title. Both ladies are from the Bahamas.

Here are the seven CARIFTA records currently held by T&T athletes:

Have to agree! Considering that weather conditions at the CARIFTA Trials were not the best and the Boys U20 100m final was very close with all 4 top places being very close and just outside the CARIFTA qualifying standard I would have given our Boys U20 4x100m relay team a good chance of medalling at the CARFIFTA Games this year even if we did not want to field any athletes in the Boys U20 individual 100m event.

Jalen Purcell (Simplex) 10.67, 2nd Chad Richards (ZC Athletics) 10.68, 3rd Xavier Mulgata (Memphis Pioneers) 10.69 in Boys U20 100m at TT Carifta Trials 2016. They all just missed the Carifta U20 qualifying standard of 10.65.

Similarly Jacob St Clair who won silver in the CARIFTA U18 400m final last year just moved up to the older U20 age group and just missed the U20 400m qualifying standard of 47.80. He should really have been sent to CARIFTA this year for his development as many have been viewing him as one of our potential top quarter-milers like another Machel Cedenio for the future. Just making it to the individual U20 400m final at CARIFTA this year would have been beneficial competition for him as he has just moved up to the older age group and would have been running with more older and faster quarter-milers than he has ever done previously.

Jacob St. Clair (Abilene Wildcats) 1st in 47.89, 2nd Kashief King (Pt. Fortin New Jets) 48.10, 3rd Judah Taylor (Abilene Wildcats) 48.39 in Boys U20 400m at TT Carifta Trials 2016. St Clair just missed the CARIFTA U20 400m Standard by 0.07 and looked like he had more in the tank if he was being pressed.

I also think with T&T now having a world class senior Men's 4x400m relay team we should be looking to expose our Men's U20 4x400m relay team to as much international competition as possible to help groom them for taking over from the seniors without our senior relay team losing a beat and dropping off in standard. Not sending a Boys U20 4x4 team to CARIFTA this year could be damaging to our 4x4 relay prospects in the future.

Not fielding any Boy's U20 relay teams for a major Caribbean country like T&T also makes us look bad and backward to the rest of the region especially if smaller and poor countries like Grenada and Barbados are sending both male and female U20 relay teams to the CARIFTA Games.
We should really be embarrassed as a country about this especially as I think both our Boy's U20 4x1 and 4x4 relay teams have the potential to medal especially with someone like Ato around to help drill and motivate them.

Sarah Wollaston – Improving Step by Step
CARIFTA GAMES 2016 - DyeStatFL

By: Noel ‘Bravo’ Francis (dyestatfl.com)
Published by DyeStatFL.com, Mar 11th, 1:50am

Sarah Wollaston in the gym at Ato Boldon's Born2DoIt Training Camp

Though small in stature Sarah Wollaston of Somerset Academy has big ambitions for her future in track and field. The 5 foot tall sprinter who was born to a Trinidadian mother and Jamaican father recently earned the right to represent Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) at the CARIFTA Games after her 2nd place finish in the 100m at the T&T CARIFTA trials.

Her coach is sprint guru and World Champion Ato Boldon who represented Trinidad & Tobago with distinction during his career. He is encouraged by her work ethics and attention to details. He also had high praise for Wollaston’s teamwork qualities and believes she is the perfect training partner for Khalifa St. Fort.
Boldon spoke about the first time he met Wollaston, “Her mother came to me last year and said she wants her to train with me and when I met her and she was only 5 feet tall I thought don’t worry about her height because Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce is that height.”

Boldon is extremely confident of taking Wollaston to the next level and has targeted the first of many sub-12 seconds clocking starting this weekend on her home track at the Miramar Invitational, in Miramar, Florida. If anyone can get Wollaston to run fast it is her coach Ato Boldon whose track record speaks volumes. He possesses the Midas touch and his work with Wollaston’s training partner St. Fort and the times she has produced since last year should serve as motivation.

Khalifa St Fort & Sarah Wollaston at CARIFTA Trials after place 1st & 2nd in Girls U20 100m Final

Wollaston will turn 18 later this year and she knows the kind of role she has to play in her destiny. Sprinting is an art, it takes dedication and focus. Sarah Wollaston is a great student and is learning step by step. She needs to work hard, stay disciplined, follow instructions and reap the rewards. The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time.

Carifta manager wants Ato to inspire team
By Jelani Beckles (T&T Guardian)

Ato Boldon...could make a difference to the mood in T&T Carifta camp.

T&T Carifta team manager Dexter Voisin wants T&T track and field legend Ato Boldon to help prepare the junior athletes for the 45th Carifta Games, which takes place from March 26-28 in Grenada.

A 57-member T&T contingent comprising 42 athletes and 15 officials will aim for more silverware this year, after the 2015 team brought home 22 medals —six gold, eight silver and eight bronze. Speaking to Voisin about the team’s chances this year, he said that having Boldon involved with the team is one of his goals.

Voisin stated: “Actually, it is one of my plans (to get Ato Boldon involved), but I have to reach out to him and if it is possible and manageable then, of course.

“We will always welcome anybody like Ato Boldon, who served our country at the highest level, who will be able to impact on the youths, especially in terms of motivation. Once that could be arranged of course I would have him address the team,” he added.

Boldon, who represented T&T at numerous Olympic Games, coaches World Youth 100-metre silver medallist Khalifa St Fort, who is part of the T&T Carifta team. Voisin expects St Fort (Girls Under-20 100m, 200m, 4X100m), Tyriq Horsford (Boys Under-18 javelin) and Akanni Hislop (Boys Under-20 200m) to have great performances, but is looking for a solid team effort.

“Overall, we are looking for some good team performances. There are some athletes who will be leading the charge. Khalifa St Fort, Tyriq Horsford and Akanni Hislop will definitely lead the charge, but we look for a good overall performance.”

Horsford and Hislop both won gold medals at the 2015 Carifta Games in St Kitts, while St Fort will compete at her first Carifta Games. Voisin did express his disappointment that long jump athlete Andwelle Wright will not be part of the team this year.

“Andwelle is one of our gold medal winners last year and the year before. It is very unfortunate that he is not part of the team this year due to injuries and also because his preparation did not go as expected leading up to the trials. He would have been one of our medal prospects this year.”
Voisin, however, is confident that Under-20 long jumper Che Richards has an excellent chance to medal.

Horsford credits coach for his success
March 21st, 2016 8:37am (TrackAlerts.com)

SCARBOROUGH, Tobago: Tyriq Horsford is one of only two returning champions on Trinidad and Tobago’s contingent to this year’s Carifta Games in St. Georges Grenada on March 26-28. At the 2015 Carifta Games he won the boys under 18 javelin gold medal at the age of 15 years of age with a new Games record of 70.73. His club mate Akanni Hislop took the boys under 18 200m and will step up to the under 20 category in Grenada. Last year’s boys under 18 shot put winner Isaiah Taylor and boys under 20 long jump champion Andwuelle Wright missed out on selection. T&T’s other gold medallists Portious Warren (girls under 20 shot put) and Kayelle Clarke (girls under 20 200m) have graduated to the open division.

Horsford officially booked his ticket to Grenada in emphatic style on the second day of the T&T Carifta trials on March 6 with a monster throw of 71.52 to go further than his Carifta record throw.  The Parletuvier resident was in a no nonsense mood at the trials as all six of his throws (68.66, 65.12, 71.52, 68.92, 60.89, 66.42) were superior to the Carifta qualifying standard of 59.00 and goes to the Grenada as the overwhelming favourite to retain his title. While his record-breaking throws at the trials may come as a surprise the Signal Hill Secondary fifth form student has been quietly making his mark with the spear all season. Prior to the trials he had already bettered the 59.00m standard in three meets  with 59.91 (NAAA Development Meet #6-Feb 20), 64.30 (Tobago Secondary Schools Champs-Feb 24), and 69.30 (NAAA Development Meet #7-Feb 28). One has to take in consideration that behind his winning throws at these meets he had several other efforts over the standard.

When asked about his success Horsford was quick to credit his coach Wade Franklyn at Zenith Athletic Club. “I just went out there and did what my coach told me to do.” Franklyn is an IAAF Level Four certified-coach. Horsford is the second Zenith javelin thrower to hold the record in the junior boys division that Franklyn has tutored. Back in 1993 Kerry Edwards won the boys under 17 title in Martinique with a then record distance of 59.38. Edwards went on to retain the title one year later in Barbados. At the 2015 Carifta Franklyn-coached Vandel Joseph and Asha James won medals. Joseph was third behind Horsford while James was second in the girls under 18 division. On this year’s T&T team to Grenada all four of the national team’s javelin throwers are from Zenith and are coached by Franklyn. Joseph will be competing in the under 20 division along with Odell Joefield while James will be hoping to improve to gold in the under 18 class.

Horsford is grateful to have the trio as training partners. “Training with them is great. You need people to motivate you to go out and do your best and that is what they do.”

The Parlatuvier Anglican Primary graduate is now aiming at keeping focussed and continue training ahead of this year’s Carifta Champs as he is aiming to break the 75m barrier before the end of the season.

Though javelin was Horsford’s first love as he has shown all-round ability. He is an accomplished hurdler and sprinter. He won the boys under 15 100m, long jump and 80m hurdles along with the javelin at the 2013 National Secondary Schools Championships and was voted the top male athlete of the meet. At the 2014 Champs he won the boys under 16 100m hurdles, javelin. He explained that Franklyn did not let him do the javelin much then.

Horsford has been blossoming at the juvenile level  as he won the boys under 15 shot put and javelin events at the 2014 Caribbean Union of Teacher (C.U.T) Games held in Trinidad taking both titles with Games record efforts of 15.64m and 61.45m. He was a member of the 2010 and 2012 CUT teams. He and club-mate Franklyn Stanislaus combined to take team gold in the boys 13-14 Heptathlon winning T&T’s first ever team gold in history of the championships.

Franklyn’s coaching success is not limited to javelin throwers. He has prepared Akeem Stewart to double gold (discus and javelin) at the 2015 Para Pan American Games in Toronto and then to bronze at the IPC Paralympic Champinships in Qatar later in the year. 1995 Carifta under 20 shot and discus champion Rhonda Hackett and 2011 Carifta boys under 17 discus gold medallist Shervorne Worrell were all under Franklyn’s care when they were victorious.

CARIFTA GAMES 2016
T&T ready to dethrone Jamaica
By Rachael King (T&T Guardian)
Published: Saturday, March 26, 2016

T&T’s future international track and field athletes will begin their quest for glory today on the first day of the 45th Flow Carifta Games which begins at the National Athletic Stadium in St George’s, Grenada.

The final batch of local athletes arrived yesterday along with some of their tough competitors from Jamaica, Barbados and Bahamas. The Jamaicans, who have dominated the premier track and field meet in the Caribbean, arrived with a contingent of 78 athletes. Bahamas, which has been the Jamaicans biggest rival over recent years, has 56 in its camp, while Barbados touched down with 30 athletes.

T&T has 42 youngsters competing but what the red, white and black lack in quantity, it certainly makes up for in quality.

Leading T&T’s contingent of 42 athletes is sprinter Khalifa St Fort who is making her maiden trip to the Carifta Games. St Fort, the Pan Am Junior 100m winner and World Youth 100m silver and World 4x100m bronze medalist, leads a fantastic cast that includes several former champions, in the hope of surpassing last year’s 23 medal count of six gold medals, eight silver and nine bronze.

This will be the first time that a major track and field competition will be held in the stadium that was reconstructed by the People's Republic of China through the China State Construction Engineering Corporation in 2006 after it was destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004.

The stadium is adjacent to the cricket stadium in Queen's Park on the outskirts of the city, overlooking the ocean and the surrounding mountains. The cricket stadium was also destroyed by Hurricane Ivan, but was rebuilt in time for the hosting of the World Cup Cricket in 2007.

The meet will have six sessions, starting today at 9 am. The official opening ceremony will take place today at 3 pm and one major difference this year is that, once the athletes have completed a final, the top three finishers will remain in a holding block and will be presented with their medals shortly after.

IAAF president Sebastian Coe is expected to lead the list of dignitaries, who will be on hand to view the Games. At a press conference, it was announced that Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, holder of the two sprint world records and a member of the 4x100m relay team, is in Grenada.

T&T’s Ato Boldon, a multiple Olympic and World Championship medalist, is also on the island coaching St Fort and another sprinter Sarah Wollaston. Both will compete in the preliminary rounds of the Girls 100m dash this morning at 9.50 am, hoping to advance to the final which closes out action on the first day.

However, it will be reigning Carifta champion and record holder in javelin, thrower Tyriq Horsford, Safiya John and Ianna Roach getting the chance to win T&T’s first medal in the first session today from 9 am. Horsford, will look to defend his boys U-18 javelin title, John will contest the girls U-18 high jump; and Roach will be in the girls U-18 shot put.

Some 650 athletes and officials will be part of the Games from countries including Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Bonaire, Cayman Islands, Curacao, Dominica, French Guiana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Martinique, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Maarteen, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, T&T, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the United States Virgin Islands.
