Ataulla Guerra and Neveal Hackshaw join Charleston Battery
charlestonbattery.com

Trinidad and Tobago Internationals Neveal Hackshaw and Ataulla Guerra will join the Battery for the 2016 season, USL confirmed Thursday afternoon. Their contracts are cleared pending ITC approval.

Hackshaw is a 20-year-old holding midfielder from the TT Pro League’s North East Stars F.C., based in Sangre Grande, Trinidad. Guerra, 28, is from Central FC in the TT Pro League, based in the Couva region of Trinidad. Both are active members of the Soca Warriors, the Trinidad and Tobago’s national team.

The two internationals joined the club during the February Invitational Camp and were immediate standouts. Hackshaw, who has been with the club since mid-February, quickly moved into the defensive midfield job opposite returning midfielder Justin Portillo. Guerra, who departed Charleston briefly to attend to business at home, has appeared in several roles. He started at forward and scored the match-winner in Wednesday night’s 2-0 victory over the USC Gamecocks in Columbia.

Battery General Manager and Head Coach Mike Anhaeuser called Hackshaw a good signing with upside, and the ability to jump in right now.

“He was a U20 international for Trinidad and did so well he’s moved up to the (senior) team,” Anhaeuser said. “He was on the roster for the US game. He came available to us and we really jumped on it right away, particularly when Jarad (former Battery midfielder Jarad van Schaik) was saying he might not come back. We had to be looking for that position. He’s been in now for several weeks, and he’s been showing that, even for a young player, he’s got a lot of potential and a big upside.”

Hackshaw and van Schaik are “kinda similar,” Anhaeuser said. “Both left-footed. Has a good engine. Jarad’s (strength) is probably his ability to get around the pitch, but Neveal is very strong and very good with the ball, so he might have a little more ability with holding players off. You don’t want to compare a player, or put pressure on him, but Hackshaw kinda fills the mold, and that’s why I was interested in getting him.

“(If he had stayed in Trinidad) he probably would have moved to one of the bigger clubs, and he’s moving here for that reason: To try to grow and become a better player, and maybe take it to the next level: MLS or maybe Europe or wherever.”

Hackshaw said he played three or four positions as a professional before settling into his current role with the Battery, which is also his position with the Soca Warriors. “I started as a left winger, moved to left back, then to stopper,” Hackshaw said. “They played me on the right wing, and then moved me into midfield. I love the midfield.”

He listed his strengths as “jumping to head the ball, winning the ball on the ground, cutting down plays, passing the ball.” He’s working on improving the right-footed side of his game.

If Hackshaw fits the mold of the young prospect, Guerra is shaping up as a veteran tone-setter, both on the field and in the locker room. Anhaeuser called him “a versatile player with a ton of quality and experience,” and described his personality as ultra-competitive.

“He wants to do well, he wants the team to do well,” Anhaeuser said. “He gets on the players, he gets on himself. But he does it in a good way, because he wants to succeed. He gets upset if he misses a pass that he knows he should have hit, he wants guys to get it in to him. And that’s what guys with experience and that edge bring to the table. We have a lot of players like that. And he seems to have a bit of character, too — a fun character, which makes it enjoyable.”

After coming up through the ranks in the TT Pro League, Guerra spent two years in the Finland Premier Division with RoPS, which won the Finnish Cup with him in 2013. His TT Pro club faced the L.A. Galaxy in CONCACAF Champions League last year, and he’s one of the most capped players on the Soca Warriors, who deploy him as a second striker. His primary position is attacking midfield, and he’s played wide, centrally and farther up the field during the Battery preseason.

Guerra described his playing style as “very athletic, like to be on the ball and want to do well all the time. I want to win games, and I came here to win as many trophies as I could.”

He sees signing with the Battery as an opportunity to once again advance up the soccer pyramid.

“It was very great experience for me to play in Europe,” Guerra said. “I was young, but I took the opportunity because I wanted to play abroad for many reasons. At that time I was young, you know, and I didn’t have the experience to climb toward the next level, but now I have the experience to keep going and play at the next level. That’s my goal and that’s my dream.”

Hackshaw ready to roll with Charleston Battery

Hackshaw ready to roll with Charleston Battery
charlestonbattery.com

One returned with his team on the verge of clinching a group stage win in World Cup qualifying. The other made his way back after his country narrowly advanced to the next round of the Caribbean Cup.

But Charleston Battery internationals Neveal Hackshaw of Trinidad and Tobago and Quinton Griffith of Antigua and Barbuda shared one common experience from the end of last week’s international period: A very long day of travel.

“It sucked,” said Hackshaw, a 20-year-old defensive midfielder for both the Battery and Trinidad and Tobago’s senior national team, the Soca Warriors.

Hackshaw made his way back to Charleston on March 30, the morning after T&T trounced visiting St. Vincent and the Grenadines 6-0 to take a commanding three-point lead over the USA in CONCACAF Group C World Cup Qualifying. He got about three hours of sleep before reporting to the stadium to catch a ride with his teammates to Melbourne, Fla., for the Battery’s April 1 match with Orlando City B.

The first-year Battery man figured as a substitute in both wins over St. Vincent, providing the back-breaking assist in Trinidad’s 3-2 first-leg victory on March 23. The home team had twice taken the lead, but the Soca Warriors had twice equalized by the time Hackshaw entered in the 82nd minute.

Within moments of checking in, Hackshaw spotted left winger Levi Garcia of AZ Alkmaar making a run off his blind side. Hackshaw’s long diagonal pass bounced right into his path. “He took it in stride and just hit it home one time,” for the match-winner, Hackshaw said.

Trinidad and Tobago will qualify for the the next round of World Cup qualification with a win at home against Guatemala or on the road against the United States in September.

Griffith, now in his fourth season with the Battery, played every minute in both of Antigua’s Caribbean Cup matches: a 2-1 win over Aruba on March 23, and a 1-0 loss to rivals St. Kitts and Nevis on March 29. His Benna Boys with be the No. 3 seed in its three-team group when Cup play resumes.

“We knew the first game we had to win, because the second game we knew would not be easy for us,” Griffith said. “So the first game was not as tough, but we won it. We could have scored more goals,  but so be it.”

Despite short rest, long travel and heavy legs, Griffith returned to the Battery starting XI against OCB. Hackshaw, who has emerged as the Battery’s top option at defensive midfield next to Justin Portillo, made his Battery and USL debut in the second half of the Battery’s scoreless draw.

“It was pretty frustrating,” Hackshaw said. “We had a lot of possession, but sometimes the final pass wasn’t right. We got chances, hit the post, defenders blocked the shot. Goalkeeper made a couple of good saves. Even though we had all the possession, we were getting frustrated just trying to get it in.”

Hackshaw could assume the starting DM role in Saturday’s home match with Wilmington Hammerheads. It was filled by fellow Trinidadian Ataullah Guerra — typically an attacking specialist — against New York Cosmos and in the Battery’s first two USL games.

“I’m feeling great,” Hackshaw said of his return to regular training in Charleston. “I’m ready to make the team stronger than how it is already, I’m ready to help us win and do what I have to do to make us successful.”

The Battery hosts Wilmington in a Southern Derby Cup match Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $10 and can be purchased online at charlestonbattery.com or over the phone at 843.971.GOAL (4625).

Hackshaw eager to impress Lawrence.
By Shaun Fuentes (Guardian).

Midfielder Neveal Hackshaw is ready to make a good impression on national team head coach Dennis Lawrence as he gets his first opportunity to play under the former Everton man in the upcoming friendlies against Grenada and Guyana.

Hacksaw has not been in the national selection since the departure of Stephen Hart, which meant he missed the better part of the final round of World Cup qualification. But the former North East Stars player continued to stay active and made 19 appearances for the Charleston Battery in the 2017 United Soccer League (USL) season. He recorded 33 interceptions and had 12 key passes while winning 115 of 205 duels in the regular season, according to the club stats.

“It feels great to have gotten called up to the national team again and an even greater joy to be able to represent my country. I missed being part of the squad for much of the year and hopefully now I can make a good impression and a contribution to the team going forward,” Hackshaw said.

“I am hoping to be a good asset in the middle of the pitch.” Hackshaw is a past national under 20 captain, guiding the team to the CONCACAF Final round a couple years back under head coach Derek King, and has made six senior team appearances.

Commenting on his season with Charleston Battery, Hackshaw added, “The season was a great one. There was a lot of fight and togetherness in the team and we gave it our all to eventually finish second but unfortunately we only made it to the quarter finals of the playoffs. Generally it was a productive season and I’m thankful for the way things went.”

T&T faces Grenada today at 6pm at the Ato Boldon Stadium and will be looking for an impressive win as they seek to end the year on a high.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Neveal Hackshaw named to USL Team of the Week (#18)
By Sarah Cardamone (charlestonbattery.com)

Charleston Battery defender Neveal Hackshaw has been named to the USL Team of the Week for week 18.

Hackshaw helped the Battery to two wins over top four opponents at MUSC Health Stadium last week. The Trinidadian defender scored the eventual game-winning goal Saturday night against reigning USL Champions Louisville City FC, sealing the Battery’s first win over Lou City since their inaugural season in 2015. The goal was the first of Hackshaw’s career.

Hackshaw and the Battery back three continued their defensive success in the week 18 victories, allowing just seven shots on target across both matches. Hackshaw has been a mainstay in the Battery that has only allowed 19 goals in 18 games this season.

Gordon Wild joins Hackshaw as a reserve on the Week 18 Team. Wild scored both goals in Charleston’s 2-1 win over Indy Eleven last Wednesday and assisted Hackshaw’s goal against Louisville on Saturday.

The Battery will be back in action this Saturday, July 21 when they head to Pennsylvania to take on the second-place Pittsburgh Riverhounds at Highmark Stadium.

Indy Eleven midfielder Neveal Hackshaw named to USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 12
IndyEleven.com

Indy Eleven defender/midfielder Neveal Hackshaw has been voted to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 12. Hackshaw was a powerhouse for Indy’s backline last Saturday against Nashville SC, as he won 10 of 14 duels, accumulated 14 recoveries and three interceptions that helped lead the team to its fifth consecutive shutout in all competitions. Hackshaw also completed over 80 percent of his passes on the evening, checking another box on the Trinidad & Tobago international’s impressive effort up and down the left flank.

Hackshaw’s Team of the Week appearance marks the fifth time a member of Indiana’s Team has made the weekly cut in 2019. Ayoze Garcia (Week 4, 11), Dane Kelly (Week 7; Player of the Week) and Evan Newton (Week 9; Player of the Week) have also earned spots in Team of the Week lineups so far this season.

Hackshaw continues to impress in the USL Eastern Conference after coming stateside three seasons ago with Charleston Battery. He made 82 appearances during his stint with the Battery, starting 32 of 33 appearances, scoring one goal and two assists during in Black and Yellow last season. Moreover, Hackshaw solidified his status as a stout defensive midfielder, having accumulated 146 clearances and 45 interceptions by the end of 2018.

Outside of league play, Hackshaw has been making a name for himself for his national team contributions. In total, Hackshaw has earned 16 caps for Trinidad & Tobago, having made his international debut with the Soca Warriors’ U-20 team in January 2015 and his senior international debut two months later as a substitute in a Copa America Centenario qualifying round against Haiti. Hackshaw’s most recent international appearance came as an impressive late-game substitute at Wales on March 20, and he’s eyeing more potential “caps” this summer after recently being named to T&T’s 40-man preliminary roster for the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

CB – Neveal Hackshaw, Indy Eleven (7.08): Hackshaw put up good defensive numbers on a solid Indy back line, but his high-volume passing stats appear to have helped push him up this list. This is one of the things that thoroughly upsets me about dennis lawrence. this guy is a very good midfielder he’s young so he can continue with the national team for years to come and he’s better than anything we have in midfield right now, so why is he not paired with hyland instead of this leston Paul and this kavan george bloke?

I remember after it was mathematically impossible to qualify for the world cup dennis claimed that he would set out to build a team for the future, yet he went back like a dog to his vomit with the likes of phillip, bateau, cyrus, mikel Williams and leston Paul.

right now players likes che benny, jarrell brito, tristin hodges, rondel winchester, Noah powder, ne al hackshaw, jameel boatswain and Greg ranjitsingh should be regulars on this team, not marvin phillip and certainly not danial cyrus.

Indy Eleven defender Neveal Hackshaw named to USL Championship 2019 All-League First Team
IndyEleven.com

Indy Eleven is proud to announce defender Neveal Hackshaw has been named to the USL Championship’s All-League First Team for the 2019 season. The announcement comes after the United Soccer League honored 22 total standout performers across the Championship from the 2019 regular season on Tuesday afternoon.

“Neveal has been an outstanding performer all season long,” said Indy Eleven Head Coach Martin Rennie. “He has done an excellent job defensively and has been very involved in our attacking play, as well. He has added a lot to our team on and off the field.”

In his first season with the Boys in Blue, Hackshaw, 24, played a pivotal role in Coach Rennie’s squad, starting 32 of his 33 matches played across all competitions in 2019. The defender’s consistency during the season helped Indy Eleven earn the Eastern Conference’s third seed in the USL Championship Playoffs and capture a pair of postseason wins en route to hosting the Eastern Conference Final last Saturday.

Hackshaw ranked in the USL Championship’s top 10 among outfield players with 231 recoveries, won 65.8% of duels – 10th in the league among players to win at least 175 duels in the regular season – and won 29 of 39 tackles. Moreover, he’s been a thorn in the side of opposing attackers all season long, racking up 88 clearances and 14 shot-denying blocks. Hackshaw also tallied 42 interceptions, keeping the opposition’s forward passing to a minimum.

The stout defender also put up impressive performances in the attacking third, notching two goals from 16 shots and had one assist out of the nine chances he created over the course of the year.

In addition to his league play, Hackshaw was called upon to represent Trinidad & Tobago in CONCACAF Gold Cup and Nations League competitions, bringing his international first-team appearances to 12.

The 2019 USL Championship All-League Team was voted on by club management and a league-wide media panel that included representation from every USL market.

The finalists for the 2019 Championship Awards will be announced on Wednesday, preceding the 2019 USL Championship Final, which will air live on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes in the United States on Sunday, November 17 at 7:30 p.m. ET as Louisville City FC of the Eastern Conference and Real Monarchs SLC of the Western Conference meet at Lynn Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky.

With 2019 now in the book, Indy Eleven continues to prepare for the upcoming 2020 USL Championship season. Season ticket packages for 2020 are now available at IndyEleven.com/season-tickets or by calling 317-685-1100.

Hackshaw proved an integral part of an Indy defense that conceded a league-fewest six goals at home while ranking in the top 10 among outfield players with 231 recoveries and winning 65.8 of duels – 10th in the league among players to win at least 175 duels in the regular season.

Neveal Hackshaw ranked at #3 in the list of Top 10 Caribbean Players in the USL Championship in 2020.

When Neveal Hackshaw first arrived in the Championship at the Charleston Battery in 2016, there was a lot of raw potential for the club to work with. In the years since, the left-sided defender has become one of the best in the Championship both for the Battery and at his new home of Indy Eleven, where last year he earned Championship All-League First Team honors for the first time in his career. Hackshaw’s strength is certainly a great asset, but what has stood out beyond his defensive abilities is his passing technique and tactical awareness that has allowed him to become a strong two-way force even as part of a three center back scheme. For the 24-year-old Soca Warrior, the only question may be when he gets the bigger spotlight his talent and resume have earned.

Trinidad and Tobago utility player Neveal Hackshaw has been named the third best Caribbean player in the United Soccer League (USL), the second-tier competition in the United States.

Hackshaw is rated only behind 32-year-old Jamaican midfielder Kenardo Forbes (Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC) at number two while another Jamaican, Junior Flemmings (Phoenix Rising FC), is considered the number one player in the USL. Meanwhile, another T&T footballer getting an honourable mention was 23-year-old Dre Fortune (North Carolina FC).

Strong defensively and a good passer of the ball, Hackshaw was a central defensive midfielder at Under-20 level for Trinidad and Tobago and later, for TT Pro League club North East Stars. However, he has played mainly at left-back in the USA for the Charleston Battery and his current team, Indy XI.

Flemmings, the Jamaican international, started all five of the country’s games at the 2019 Concacaf Gold Cup and was already a highly-regarded player in the league prior to this season. Now, he’s found a whole other level with 10 goals in nine games to start the new campaign for the USL Championship Final favourites.

And writing for uslsoccer.com, reporter Nicholas Murray spoke highly of Hackshaw, who turns 25 next month.

“When Neveal Hackshaw first arrived in the Championship at the Charleston Battery in 2016, there was a lot of raw potential for the club to work with. In the years since, the left-sided defender has become one of the best in the Championship both for the Battery and at his new home of Indy Eleven where last year, he earned Championship All-League First Team honours for the first time in his career.”

Having been given a couple of senior caps by former Trinidad and Tobago coach Dennis Lawrence, Murray expects Hackshaw to cement a T&T national team place in coming years.

“Hackshaw’s strength is certainly a great asset but what has stood out beyond his defensive abilities is his passing technique and tactical awareness that has allowed him to become a strong two-way force even as part of a three centre-back scheme. For the 24-year-old Soca Warrior, the only question may be when he gets the bigger spotlight his talent and resume have earned.”
