WICB vice president hits out at Darren Sammy

Emmanuel Nathan, West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) vice-president, lashed out at Darren Sammy for his scathing comments against the cricket board following West Indies' win in the ICC World Twenty20 2016, terming it "irrelevant, demeaning, insulting and unfortunate".

"To spoil what was a tremendous achievement for the Caribbean civilization with comments that are totally irrelevant and demeaning and insulting to the Caribbean people, I believe was rather unfortunate," Nathan told Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) on Wednesday (April 6). "So to try to make it look like the board was inefficient in any way is rather unfortunate."

Sammy had criticised the board for meting out unfair treatment with respect to the pay dispute that the players are fighting against for several years. He also took a dig at the selection panel by stating that he didn't know when he would get a chance to play with the same set of players again.

"So the players complained that for the World Cup their fees went down maybe by 20,000 or thereabouts. But they did not say that the week before they got the World Cup contract all of them signed contracts for the regional competition where their fees went up by 80,000, 140,000, 145,000, and 75,000. They did not say that," Nathan said.

Soon after beating England by four wickets in a thrilling final encounter at the Eden Gardens, Sammy recounted how the team manager had to run around to arrange for the players' jerseys on time. Nathan, however, said that the West Indies' T20I captain didn't narrate the complete story when he chose to criticise the board publicly.

"The date was coming, the players had not consented to go to play so the company delivered the uniforms without the numbers of them because we were not sure which players we going to play.

"So when the logistic officer left the Caribbean for Dubai he had a ticket in his hands to go to pick up the uniforms in Calcutta, put the numbers on them and carry them himself to the team well in advance of the World Cup," he concluded.

Bravo: WICB most unprofessional in the world

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has described the West Indies Cricket Board as "the most unprofessional board in the world".

The 32-year-old said the players' kit was not ready for the World Twenty20, which they won by beating England in the final on Sunday.

Bravo said: "We get to India, our names were not even printed on the uniforms."

He also described WICB president Dave Cameron as "arrogant" and "very immature".

Bravo, who was stripped of the West Indies captaincy two years ago after leading a players' strike that resulted in them returning early from a tour of India, said: "Our manager had to leave our camp to get names and numbers printed while in India.

"We played this entire tournament without caps."

West Indies captain Darren Sammy critical of cricket board after win

The West Indies players are involved in a long-running pay dispute with the WICB, with several leading players choosing not to play Test cricket.

T20 captain Darren Sammy heavily criticised the WICB during the post-match presentation after his side's thrilling four-wicket win over England in Kolkata.

Cameron tweeted: "When is the last time a critic paid one your bills? Always remember that when you start to give them your energy."

Bravo told CNC3, a Trinidad and Tobago television channel: "A lot of people come down on the players.

"They questioned our commitment. They questioned whether we really committed to West Indies cricket or is it just the money.

"A lot of people don't understand the sort of thing we go through as players dealing with our board."

Bravo, Sammy and opening batsman Chris Gayle were among the players who were not offered contracts by the WICB for 2015-16.

The WICB says it will only negotiate players' contracts with the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA), although just one player in the 15-man World T20 squad is a member of the WIPA.

WAVELL Hinds, president and chief executive officer of the West Indies Players’ Association (WIPA), has challenged regional Twenty20 (T20) Captain Darren Sammy to substantiate claims made against the cricketers’ union in the midst of an ongoing wage dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB).

Speaking to the Jamaica Observer in an interview yesterday, Hinds also shot down Sammy’s assertion that WIPA is not a legitimate representative of the players in the World T20 squad — most of whom are not members of the union.

Andre Fletcher is the only playerin the current squad who is a WIPA member. In a letter to WICB Chief Executive Officer Michael Muirhead, Sammy, who claimed to be acting on behalf of the T20 squad, rejected WIPA.

“As a group, we don’t accept that WIPA can represent us. WIPA became conflicted during its negotiations with you and compromised itself,” Sammy wrote, while demanding an increased payment package for players set to participate in the upcoming T20 tournament.

“It [WIPA] could not and did not actively represent the best interests of all West Indies cricketers and is a major reason we are having this discussion,” the letter added.

When asked to respond to the West Indies T20 skipper, Hinds said: “That claim about becoming conflicted and being compromised was made by Mr Sammy, and only he knows why he would say that.

It would be interesting to see him substantiate that claim with empirical evidence.” Hinds explained that WIPA acts on behalf of all first-class cricketers — regardless of union membership status — in any contractual arrangement with the WICB, led by President Whycliffe ‘Dave’ Cameron.

As such, he said all players representing the West Indies are expected to fall in line with agreements between the two. “WIPA represents West Indian first-class cricketers as it relates to all matters having to do with the WICB, ICC [International Cricket Council], and everything to do with West Indies cricket,” he said.

The WIPA boss, a member of the union’s executive since 2002, said the new payment structure was communicated to players in May 2015.

On that basis he said he is taken aback that squad members are only now expressing dissatisfaction with it. “It is quite surprising that players are now expressing objection at the new payment structure when it was communicated from in May,” Hinds said.

Hinds, a former West Indies player, said that after the abandoned tour of India in late 2014, WIPA and WICB engaged in mediation, which also involved the Federation of International Cricketers Association and ICC.

“As a result, there was comprehensive review of MOU [memorandum of understanding] and CBA [collective bargaining agreement] which included the remuneration package for all professional cricket in the West Indies in May 2015,” said the WIPA CEO.

He said five players — Marlon Samuels, Denesh Ramdin, Jerome Taylor, Darren Bravo, and Jason Holder — who Sammy “claims to be representing in the current T20 squad were at the WICB retreat in Barbados in May 2015”.

“The payment package was explained in full to players and they were given the chance to give their opinion. Also present there were some franchise captains at the time, including Tamar Lambert and Liam Sebastien.

“The new regional franchise retainer system started on August 1, 2015, and 90 players signed. On October 1, 2015, the new contract started for international players.

All these payments have been made in accordance to what was agreed at the mediation in May,” outlined Hinds as he sought to remove any culpability on WIPA’s part.

The relationship between West Indies cricketers and the players’ union broke down two years ago during the controversial India tour.

I find the statement in bold to be curious.

It was my understanding that a Union can only represent the employees who join the Union and pay their fees.

If a player does not wish to be part of the Union does he then enjoy the same rights as the a player who is part of it and paying fees.

Does this mean if a non Union member is automatically represented in wage disputes he would just as automatically be represented when he has a dispute with Management or the Board or will then say you are not a registered member.

If the answer is the latter then this is a representation of convenience.
If it is the former then why the hell should anyone bother to pay fees??
