Golden State starts playoffs with a rout of Houston

http://espn.go.com/blog/golden-state-warriors/post/_/id/1698/golden-state-starts-playoffs-with-a-rout-of-houston

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Notes from the Golden State Warriors' 104-78 win over the Houston Rockets in Game 1 in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs:

The Rockets started out with Trevor Ariza at power forward and Corey Brewer at small forward. They decided to go small to match Golden State's speed.

It took over 2 1/2 minutes for the Rockets to score their first points.

At the 6:31 mark, Stephen Curry scuffled with Patrick Beverley. It seemed, after reaching in, that Beverley did not readily unlock arms with Curry, prompting a shove from the MVP. Both players received technicals.

It was 18-6 Warriors with 4:44 left in the first, eventually leading to a 33-15 Warriors lead to end the quarter. The Rockets' offense got destroyed in the first half.

Dwight Howard and Beverley got mixed up on two rebounds in a row. Rebounds had a tendency to bounce off Howard’s hands in this game.

Curry unleashed a 28-foot transition bomb over Harden. He was in peak form in the first half, scoring 24 points. That is, until what happened next.

Curry missed a push shot with 2:12 left in the half. As he turned to get back on defense, he appeared to injure his right foot. On the next dead ball, with 1:07 remaining, Shaun Livingston subbed in for Curry, who eventually limped to the locker room.

Curry returned to action at the beginning of the third quarter, didn’t look right, was quickly subbed out and headed back to the locker room. His night finished right there at 20 minutes, scoring 24 points on 13 shots, with a plus-28.

The Warriors’ lead started to ebb after Curry’s exit until they turned the game around by punishing Houston’s awful transition defense. Draymond Green was key during the Curry-less minutes.

Klay Thompson, who has had his playoff struggles, wasn’t in top form. He finished 4-of-14 for 16 points.

Perhaps Thompson was just extra focused on the defensive end. In last year’s playoff series, he had trouble containing Harden. This time, he was patient and didn’t get caught on Harden’s fakes. Harden finished with only 17 points, six turnovers, and registered a minus-27. Most notably, Harden didn’t earn a single free throw.

Curry returned to the bench in the third quarter, but couldn’t quite lobby his way back into the game.

You meant the NBA Finals aka the Western Conference Finals is GSW V OKC.

I want to see another Warriors vs Cavs NBA final. This time should be a much closer series. Cavs have improved and this time around Irving and Love are fit and will be in the final unlike last year when both players had to miss the NBA final. Same time Warriors has improved to an even better team than last year. So should be an exciting final if they both meet again this season.

No mercy they will reach the finals most likely without loosing a game because the East week bad. Lebrick head will swell even more. GSW better get their act together if is OKC v Cleveland will have to skip the final Westbrook upsets me as much as Lebrick.

7 games vs heat ,   2 days off then Cleveland  , coach and players would need more time than that to prepare for a no.1 seed .

Agreed. After going 7 games, 2 days of rest/preparation wasn't sufficient.

Warriors is being overmatched, out hustled, overpowered and they can't seem to catch themselves. Since the Portland series I've been observing that almost every time they shoot a three, there's hardly anyone on the paint to contest for rebounds. When their shots are not falling they rarely get 2nd shot opportunities and it's a clear advantage for the other team. I think they have to step up in this area in game 5.

You have to respect the great Lebron. Sixth straight year for a Lebron-led team in an NBA final. Some star players playing all their career just to get to one. That is a type of milestone that can bittersweet if you not winning each time you get there. But he has a better chance this year than last year to bring a championship to his home city of Cleveland, seeing Irving and Love will most likely be in this year finals unlike last year. (Irving played only one game in the finals last year)

So Irving and Love have to do it for Lebron because it will be tough for him to reach another final and not win.

It's a celebration: LeBron soaks in moment, bounces into NBA Finals

TORONTO -- The emotional floodgates cast wide open, the meaning of LeBron James' seminal night could be felt with every puddled footstep through the Cleveland Cavaliers' postgame locker room following a rousing 113-87 win over the Toronto Raptors to punch their ticket to the NBA Finals.

The Cavs enjoyed this one, to be sure, embracing the Eastern Conference championship trophy with desire, rather than disdain and drenching each other in their celebration with what was available -- water bottles, ice buckets, whatever -- as they literally soaked up the moment.
