NorthEast United's Tony Warner joins Bolton Wanderers in temporary coaching role
By Atanu Mitra (goal.com)

Tony Warner, the former Liverpool and Fulham player, who was announced as a player cum goalkeeping coach for NorthEast United for the ensuing Indian Super League (ISL) season, has joined the coaching staff of Bolton Wanderers.

The 41-year-old, who had a stint at Bolton as a coach last season, has emerged as a frontrunner to be their next goalkeeping coach after Lee Turner parted ways with the club last week to join Charlton Athletic.

Neil Lennon, the manager of the side, has confirmed that Warner has come back to the club on a temporary basis and will be given a long-term role if Ben Amos, who has joined the club from Manchester United this summer, is comfortable working with him.

“Tony has come up from the academy, so we’ve given him a sort of trial period and see how it goes,” Lennon told The Bolton News .

“It boils down to the comfort Ben (Amos) has, it will be important. We may look for a more experienced coach but Ben will have a say in it as well,” he added.

However, Lennon acknowledged that Tony’s contract with the Indian franchise can be a potential roadblock.

“Tony has still got that offer [from India] on the table – so we’ll see how things pan out. Ben has only had a couple of days working with him so far, so we’ll have to make a decision for Tony and for Ben on that one in the next week or so,” told the coach who was Bengaluru FC coach Ashley Westwood’s teammate at Crewe Alexandra.

With the Championship due to start in 15 days, the English club could possibly rope in Tony Warner which shall certainly cast a doubt over his availability for the second season of the ISL.

Would Warner be in the starting lineup for Bolton or with the staff?

NorthEast United FC terminates Tony Warner's contract
Deccan Chronicle

Without disclosing the ground for the termination, NEUFC in its website said the 41-year-old "breached" his standard player's agreement. "NEUFC has exercised the team's right to terminate the contract of (Anthony Rudolph) Warner for material breach of his standard player's agreement. We're not prepared to provide any more detail or to discuss the underlying grounds for the contract termination at this time," NEUFC said.

The English-born Trinidad and Tobago footballer, who had a stint at Bolton as a coach last season, had joined the coaching staff of Bolton Wanderers despite signing on the dotted lines with the Indian franchise.

"Tony has come up from the academy, so we've given him a sort of trial period and see how it goes," manager of Bolton Wanderers Neil Lennon was quoted as saying in the media.

NorthEast United FC on Saturday terminated the contract of former Liverpool and Fulham player Tony Warner, who was announced as a player-cum-goalkeeping coach for the second edition of the Indian Super League football tournament.

chennaiyinfc.com

Chennaiyin FC announced the signing of Tony Warner as their goalkeeping coach for the 2017-18 campaign of the Hero Indian Super League.

Warner, 43, joins head coach John Gregory's coaching staff which already includes assistant coaches Mark Lillis and Syed Sabir Pasha and sports scientist Niall Clark.

The former goalkeeper had a playing career spanning more than two decades with the majority of it having spent in English football.

He has had spells at Liverpol, Hull City and Fulham and played over 200 league games for Millwall, having also reached the FA Cup final with them in 2004. He also represented Trinidad and Tobago at international level.

Outside England, he also had stints with New Zealand's Wellington Phoenix in Australia's A-League and Floriana FC in Malta. As a goalkeeping coach he has worked at Bolton Wanderers in the past.

"I am delighted to have joined Chennaiyin's coaching staff and grateful to the club and John Gregory for giving me this opportunity. I have already enjoyed working with the keepers here and look forward to help them develop and have a great season ahead," Warner said from Chennaiyin's pre-season training base in Hua Hin, Thailand.
