Relegated Shiva Boys eye SSFL return.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Shiva Boys Hindu College, the 2017 Coca-Cola InterCol champions could be returned to the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) this season and may even have the chance to defend its title.

The Penal-based school was relegated for the illegal use of players Kierron Mason and Matthew Beal last season, but its demotion is set to be challenge on the basis that the League violated its own constitution and unfairly punished the school by deducting 10 points that resulted in its relegation.

Naparima College lodged an appeal against Shiva Boys for the use of Mason on September 8, after the midfielder was found to have played on September 2 for Marabella Family Crisis Centre in the T&T Super League, which was well outside the SSFL’s cut-off date of August 31. The SSFL constitution states that appeals are to be made within 72 hours, and thereby Naps, which appealed two days after the game, had won the appeal.

However, Fatima College and QRC later lodged appeals against the same player nine days after and won. Shiva manager Sheldon Maharaj said his school did not attend a meeting of the appeals committee, knowing that the appeals by the North schools were against the constitution. Shiva also did not challenge the decision of the appeals committee. Yesterday, president of the SSFL Williams Wallace said the matter is set to face arbitration over the next week or so after it was raised at last week’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Mucurapo East Secondary School. “I don’t know how arbitration will rule, they may well rule in favour of Shiva Boys and put them back in the League , I don’t know,” Wallace said .

Shiva Boys matter did not go to the Appeals Committee last year, and they may now fancy their chances in front an arbitration panel being led by Tyrone Marcus, the legal representative for the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs. Wallace said the League faced a few problems in the past, one in which its constitution specified that the Appeals Committee was the final channel to deal with issues of appeals.

If this is the case, however, then there’s unlikely to be a need for arbitration. Wallace said in the past the League used the expertise of the arbitration panel, before being told by Marcus and company, that there was no need for their services. However, the League will continue to use arbitration.

Wallace said until it receives legal advice to do otherwise.

Last year the Board of the SSFL took a decision to seek amendments to its constitution on legal issues to improve the management of its tournament, as Wallace made it clear he wants to focus on running a good league competition and allow the legal personnel to deal with matters of that nature.

Yesterday, Maharaj confirmed that documents of his school’s concerns were already submitted to the SSFL to be transferred to the arbitration panel.

Meanwhile, another proposal made at the AGM was for young school players to cease their involvement with any other club team, from the day they played their first match for their school.

Discussions on this will continue, Wallace said.

The ‘Shiva ruling’: SSFL changes rule for students in club competitions; Elie takes over at Trinity Moka
By Lasana Liburd *Wired868).

The Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) has amended its ruling on players involved in club competitions—in a move meant to avoid a repeat of the Shiva Boys’ Hindu College fiasco which took place in 2017.

Shiva Boys, who won the 2016 Premier Division title, were relegated from the SSFL last season after utility player Kierron Mason and left-back Matthew Beal were discovered to have represented club teams after the cut-off date of 31 August.

Mason, a former National Under-20 player, represented the Marabella Family Crisis Centre in the Trinidad and Tobago Super League (TTSL) on 2 September while Beal turned out for Siparia Angels in the Southern Football Association (SFA) competition on the same day.

And, although neither player represented their clubs again that season, the late identification of the rule violation meant Shiva Boys were docked points for 10 of their 14 league games—and subsequently plunged from title hopefuls to table proppers.

The situation will not be repeated since, at Saturday’s AGM, the SSFL agreed to give players a clean slate whenever they play their first school match.

“What we have done is,” SSFL president William Wallace told Wired868, “instead of having the cut-off date of 31 August, once the student plays his first game in the SSFL, his registration [with any other competition] would be nullified.

“So, instead of going with the cut-off date, we decided that, if a student decides late to come in to the schools league, we are not going to stop that student.”

The SSFL ruling amends Article 16 (4) (a) of its Constitution which stated that: “A player, who having been registered and/or is playing with the TTFA or with another League or Association affiliated to the TTFA after 31st August of the current year, shall not be eligible to be registered as a player for their school unless they meet the criteria of the Credentials Committee.”

The implementation of Article 16 last season led to one of the most controversial episodes in the history of the Premier Division, as Shiva Boys were relegated after an inadvertent technicality.

Neither Mason nor Beal played in any external competition during the season and both would have been cleared to play in the SSFL if the school had applied promptly for their clearance. However, Shiva Boys Principal Dexter Sakal and team manager Sheldon Maharaj missed it and, when the complaint about the players came in, they were forced to pay the ultimate price.

For 2018, schools can breathe a bit easier on that score. Further, the SSFL’s amendment means that students who might have been discovered late by their school coaches or transferred in will no longer be ineligible merely because they represented their clubs after 31 August.

Wallace explained that, even if a student played in a TTFA-affiliated competition for all of September and October, he will still be able to play in the SSFL—on condition that he not represent his club for the remainder of the season.

Should the player return to represent his club, he will be deemed ineligible to play any more SSFL games that season. And, if he does anyway, the school will be docked points for any SSFL matches in which the player features after that point.

In other SSFL news, former Trinidad and Tobago Men’s National Under-17 coach and TTFA FA Trophy winner Ken Elie has rejoined the schoolboys league after a six-year hiatus.

Elie, a Defence Force Warrant Officer Class 1, has already started work at Trinity College Moka, where he succeeds former head coach Marlon Minguel. Minguel, who led Moka to the North Zone Intercol title in 2016, was fired earlier this year.

The new coach hopes to build on Minguel’s solid work and is aiming for a top three finish for the school which barely avoided relegation last year.

“I realise there is some work to do but I am not afraid to work and I will give it my best,” said Elie, whose last school job was at Belmont Secondary in 2012. “I told them I envisioned a spot in the top three and that is what we are aiming for. […] I think it is achievable, given their last two years.

“I did my report in April and I indicated to the principal [Carl Tang] and manager [Shawn Lindsay] that what they have going for them is the guys are very disciplined. I can do wonders with a team like that and with that kind of personality.”

Presentation College (San Fernando) are the current SSFL Premier Division champions while Shiva Boys won last season’s Coca-Cola National Intercol title.

Fresh SSFL registration drama: “Caps” set to be docked points but likely to avoid relegation.
By Lasana Liburd (Wired868).

Carapichaima East Secondary look set to lose points for flouting registration rules during their 2017 Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Premier Division campaign. However, they are expected to survive relegation, in a final twist to the controversial season.

“Caps” are facing a probe into the registration of seven of their players—after an inquiry by Shiva Boys Hindu College. However, an SSFL insider suggested that the Central Zone Intercol champions are expected to win all but one of the challenges.

Shiva Boys, who were relegated after a registration error involving midfielder Kierron Mason and left-back Matthew Beal, queried a series of suspicious paperwork by the Central school.

First, Carapichaima East attacker Theophilus Bourne and goalkeepers Aaron Best and Andre St Clair were all officially transferred on 8 September and registered to play on the same day—in violation of a SSFL rule that says players cannot play until 72 hours after becoming a bonafide student. Bourne was instrumental in his team’s 2-0 win over Fatima College that evening too.

According to a source, Carapichaima officials have conceded that the players should not have featured against Fatima.

As a result, Caps are expected to be docked three points, which will go to Fatima. Once confirmed, Fatima will leapfrog San Juan North Secondary into fourth place with 28 points—behind the trio of Presentation College (San Fernando) (35 points), Naparima College (33 points) and St Anthony’s College (30 points).

Carapichaima’s new total of 15 points will see the school drop from seventh to 11th, leaving them just five points clear of the relegation zone.

However, Carapichaima East are expected to survive the more serious probes into the registration of team captain and playmaker Mecaheil Alexander, attacker Jeremy Lara and defenders Akeil Vesprey and Luke Charles.

Somehow, Vesprey and Charles were allowed to represent their school in the Premier  Division although there was no evidence of a transfer approval from the SSFL in their registration form. And, in Lara’s case, approval to repeat was missing.

Additionally, the paperwork for Caps captain, Alexander, suggested that he was only in Form Five—despite the fact that he had written his SEA as far back as in 2010.

SSFL president William Wallace told Wired868 he saw the relevant documents on Thursday or Friday and they were now in the hands of general secretary Azaad Khan now.

In Alexander’s case, Wallace claimed that the player wrote his SEA in 2013 but a typo suggested otherwise. This error has apparently been cleared up. Curiously though, the date of birth on the midfielder’s registration form suggests he is 19 years old.

Wallace suggested too that Vesprey, Charles and Lara did get the necessary approval from the Ministry of Education to play last season and the paperwork is now with Khan.

But why were the trio allowed to play, despite the SSFL seemingly not having the proper registration data for them?

“That is a very good question,” said Wallace. “I don’t know why [the proper approval forms] were not lodged with the SSFL but I tend to stay away from those things [and leave them to the relevant bodies].”

Wallace might have double reason to distance himself from this probe since he is a teacher at Carapichaima East. However, the former Soca Warriors manager does not have a formal role with his school’s team and would not have been involved in their registration.

The same cannot be said for SSFL Credentials Committee member Laurence Seepersad, who is also a Carapichaima East staff member.

But, as Wallace pointed out, Seepersad—who is also the SSFL’s assistant secretary, operations—does not run the Credentials Committee himself and works alongside Khan and assistant secretary, admin, Gerald Elliot.

Wired868 tried unsuccessfully to reach Khan for comment. The SSFL’s formal ruling on the seven Carapichaima East players is expected early next week.

If Carapichaima East were found guilty of improperly registering Lara, Vesprey, Charles and Alexander—or even one of those four players—it could see the Central team relegated instead of Tobago’s Speyside High.

At present, the schools which will play in the SSFL Premier Division in 2018 are the following:

Presentation (San F’do), Naparima, St Anthony’s, Fatima, San Juan North, St Mary’s College, Trinity College East, QRC, St Augustine Secondary, St Benedict’s College, Trinity College Moka and newly promoted East Mucurapo Secondary, Valencia High and Bishop’s High School.

Awai: School football killing player development.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Michael Awai, the Director of Football at the T&T Pro League campaigners North East Stars, is calling for the Coca-Cola-sponsored National InterCol Schoolboys Football League to be changed from its present form.

The Stars’ boss believes the tournament is playing very little part if any in the overall development of the sport in T&T, as three months of football for young, budding footballers have done absolutely nothing to achieve the goal of enhancing players’ techniques and abilities apart from being a showcase tournament.

The National InterCol tournament, as well as the Secondary Schools Football League, have become a fixture on the calendar for school students, featuring a ready-made fan base and an avenue for young footballers to receive scholarships to Colleges and universities in the USA for which they are required to take the SAT exam. Through the SSFL players are receiving opportunities to go on trials with professional clubs overseas, as well as a chance represent the country at different age-group levels.

Awai said in spite of this, however, the tournament has not focused on a more technically sound player on the field, as seen in their inability to make the transition to international football and to be competitive, as the results of the country’s junior teams at international tournaments provides the evidence.

“If you look at the CAC Games alone, you will see they cannot beat Costa Rica, Honduras and Colombia, and they have been largely ineffective when they go abroad on trials etc,” Awai said.

It also creates a lot of school drop-outs, after six weeks of football as some students don’t return to school, Awai said.

He believes sponsorship monies given for the InterCol should instead be directed to the pro league clubs to pay quality development coaches locally and internationally. “Every young player should be involved with a coaching academy which have developmental coaches. The schools should all be aligned to clubs or vice versa, and the focus should be on teaching players how to play the game of football,” Awai explained.

He added, “Let the school football be played during the school hours and allow the young students to go to the academies afterwards, as there are no development coaches at schools.”

Meanwhile, Awai’s Future Generation of Footballers (FUTGOF) Academy kicked off on July 2 for interested young players between the age group 5- 17 years at the Cipriani College of Labour & Co Operative Studies Ground, Churchill Roosevelt Highway in Valsayn.

FUTGOF aims to develop the proper technique and ability of players in the basic skills of the game such as passing, heading, trapping, kicking, dribbling, shooting, control and touch.

Times for training will be Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4-6pm. Interested persons to contact him at (373-2800, 789-2781) for further details on sponsorship etc.

Being on both sides of this debate, I'll give my seemingly 'biased' point of view.

Marketing 101.

A S.W.O.T. analysis would have been done by the SSFL sponsors to determine which would have been better for future growth in their goods and/or services. If the Pro-League development product did not meet their criteria, guess what possible sponsors would do?

Development 101.

From where I stand, SSFL is specifically for school children to play. It has it's place and for most it's NOT development. For us coaches who recognise and understand the benefits of SSFL, you find a way to work with it. In-school academies such as what Grosvenor is doing at QRC (I'm working on my blueprint for Bishop's High School's Development Academy as well) can do a lot for player development within the school environment. Youth Development needs a bit of creative thinking and work-arounds.

In addition, the majority of players who enter the youth national program ranks are from these same Pro-League club development system environment. As much as he levels a scathing attack on SSFL, he's also highlighting the incredible inefficiencies the Pro-League development system has to offer our youth and the answer to these issues tend to lie in two main areas:

1. Administration

2. Finances and/or sponsorship (spoken out in1st paragraph)

What needs to happen on the Pro-League side of things is simple: they need to make themselves a more viable option for development and that tends to start from in-house. It's made worse when the Pro-League itself is in the press for all the wrong reasons (players' strike due to non-payment of wages).

Grosvenor, Grayson, Mulraine disagree with Awai

Grosvenor, Grayson, Mulraine disagree with Awai
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian)

Director of Football at North East Stars Mike Awai has come under fire for his views which were reported in this newspaper that school football is killing player-development in T&T.

A number of top coaches, all of whom have passed through Secondary School Football League (SSFL) system, such as Nigel Grosvenor who is the head coach at Queen’s Royal College (QRC), Travis Mulraine, the Arima North Secondary boss and Michael Grayson, the coach at Trinity College East, have expressed their disagreement with Awai’s statement which was published on Sunday, have said it is instead the clubs that are not developing the young players.

Yesterday, Grosvenor in a two-page email said as a Dean, teacher and football coach for over 34 years he wouldn’t even try to call names of people who have passed through the SSFL but reminded Awai, there are doctors, lawyers, Army and Police personnel, and professional footballers abroad and right here in T&T that have passed through the school system.

According to Grosvenor: “Apart from the books and playing football for your school, this is what school is all about, all of this together is education, all of this is development.”

The long-serving St Anthony’s College coach, who was recently joined by Kenwyne Jones as his assistant at QRC, scuffed at Awai’s comment that there are no developmental coaches in the school system and point to Grayson, Mulraine, Sean Cooper, an former national youth coach at Presentation College, Angus Eve, another former national youth coach who coaches at Naparima College: Reynold Carrington, the St Benedict’s College coach, Trevor Spicer, the St Mary’s College coach, Trinity Moka, Ken Elie, a former national and Defence Force coach and himself.

Grosvenor said: “I want to remind you (Awai) that your son is a product of the same SSFL. He attended two schools playing in the SSFL, got his passes received a full scholarship to a University in the USA, got his degree, and is now making five times the amount of money the highest player in the pro league makes. It is really sad to hear you (Awai) bring down the SSFL like that. Let us see how we can enhance the players in the SSFL not try and bring them down.”

Grayson reminded that all the school’s league has the country’s young players for a maximum of five months, noting the other eight months they are in the possession of the clubs.

“Coaches like Anton Corneal and Bertille St Claire have taken youth teams to the Youth World Cups so where did the players come from?” asked Grayson, who also called Awai to say what are the so-called clubs, academies and Youth Pro League teams doing if the schools are not developing the players.

Grayson, who has represented T&T in football both as player and coach, said he was not surprised that the school’s league was being blamed for the country’s poor showing at Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games and called on Awai to say exactly what he meant by no developmental coaches in the SSFL.

Mulraine, a former QRC midfielder, believes the clubs are in fact, not developing young players at all, and challenged any pro league clubs to prove him wrong. He, in fact, expressed an opposite view to Awai, saying clubs should instead be developed through the schools as they do not have access to the resources to develop players, such as its own fields, rooms to hold board sessions, AV or computer rooms, gyms, laundry and hall etc.

Mulraine, whose exploits on the football field for QRC has landed him the opportunity to represent the country at both junior and senior levels as well as at club level in T&T football, said it’s insane to say there are no development coaches at schools, when coaches such as Jean Lilywhite and Roderick Warner, are among many others who have spent their careers developing players.

Quite predictable that Awai was going to receive a public reprimand for espousing that view. Big difference between the way things should be and the way they are.

Wallace promises SSFL bumper season

Wallace promises SSFL bumper season
By Walter Alibey (T&T Guardian)

It will be a bumper season in the Secondary Schools Football League this year, president William Wallace has said, and members of the Credentials Committee of the SSFL are working around the clock to ensure that this happens.

The League will kick-off next Thursday with a doubleheader at the Centre of Excellence in Tunapuna between newly Premier Division promoted school Valencia Secondary taking on San Juan Secondary from 3 pm, followed by the feature clash between St Benedict's College and Trinity College East at 5 pm, a match that will be televised live on Caribbean Sports Television Network Sportsmax.

Wallace pointed out that members of the credential committee are at this point, working hard to ensure there are no problems with players' registration, as what took place last year. Despite a high-quality of on-the-field display in the SSFL last season, the League was plagued by improper registration of players moving from club teams to schools, as well as students with false certificates entering schools for the sake of just playing football.

Wallace told Guardian Media Sports that his executive took a decision to start the League a week later in an attempt to alleviate all and any concerns of students being illegally registered. He said, "This is what's happening as we speak. The schools are in the process of dealing with registration of students and the credentials committee is also monitoring student/players for the SSFL."

Wallace said, however, that if certificates are found to be false, then his executives will not be held accountable, as they can only deal with the info before them. "That will be a different issue," Wallace said.

Before next week's kick-off the League will be launched a day earlier (Wednesday) at a press conference at the hall of Fatima College, Mucurapo, at which Wallace will reveal a number of new developments and business-partnerships that would make the league a stand-out one. He said he is still in the process of crossing T's and dotting I's on new agreements.

However, he called on stakeholders to do the right thing to avoid any mishaps, saying 'We are dealing with young men and women who are our future leaders, so we must set an example for them."

Last year's Coca-Cola InterCol champs Shiva Boys Hindu College will play no part in this year's League, either at the Championship or the Premiership Division, after being guilty of breaking a number of the SSFL's rules that led to its demotion. Wallace said he was hoping to see the school taking part in the championship division this year but it only registered to play in the junior divisions.

Fyzabad Secondary which fielded players with false documents last year will also play only at the junior level this year.

Wallace also took a swipe at Mike Awai, the North East Stars technical director for comments that the school's league was destroying young players, saying people first need to understand the role of the SSFL before making wild comments.

Secondary School Football - It's back again.
By Colin Murray (Guardian).

Arguably T&T's most exciting and relentless football league, the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), kicks off this afternoon with a doubleheader at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoyea. The SSFL, formerly known as the Colleges Football League, is not only anticipated by players, coaches, teachers and parents, but also by a wide cross-section of past pupils of the various schools.

Bragging rights become the norm as many of these past students suddenly remember their playing days, and can recall when they scored with a shot from 35 yards out some 35 years ago.

Many also join the ride in support of their alma mater through thick and thin.

The league has gone through many different formats from zonal winners playing each other to decide the eventual winners to the big 7 formats, to the now more accepted 15 top schools from all zones competing in 15 rounds of play to eventually decide the champions.

It is always difficult to assess a new season and to decide which school can come out on top. One has to remember the schools' top priority is ensuring the boys have a proper education and hopefully most of them do well enough to go on from Form 5 to Sixth Form. This gives them an additional two years in school and a further opportunity to represent their school of choice. They also endeavour to make a good name for themselves in the football arena, simultaneously securing their passes for further education.

Over the last few years, the schools from South Zone seem to have strengthened their claims that the best school footballers hail from the south as Presentation College San Fernando, Naparima College and Shiva Boys' Hindu College have each waltzed away with the Championship title. Shiva Boys won the National Intercol in 2017 in some style after they were relegated from the Premier division due to some incompetent paperwork handed over to the SSFL. This was tough on their players as they were an extremely talented bunch.

I would expect both Presentation and Naparima to again be fighting for top honours as they both seem to have a very good developmental plan in place, so when the older boys leave school, the youngsters taking their place are already aware of what is expected of them.

St. Anthony's College finished 3rd in 2017 after speculation they would falter having lost their coach of umpteen years, but they have repeatedly proved to be the top team from the North. I expect them to be somewhere near the top again as they have produced good young players over the years. The 3 perennial colleges - Fatima, St Mary's (CIC) and Queens Royal College (QRC) have not done well lately in the league. Fatima was the best of the trio finishing 4th just 2 points behind St Anthony's. However, they never really looked as if they would cop the title and in the end to finish where they did was good. They need some dynamic players to improve their position. CIC and QRC were disappointing even though they finished mid-table - 6th and 7th respectively. They were far too inconsistent. In 2018, if they don't win games away from home more regularly, I expect them to finish mid table again.

San Juan North did well again last year finishing 5th and losing out on the National Intercol final. They need to show more fight in the league as they do in the Intercol. They seem to throw in the towel when things are not going their way; let's hope in 2018 their attitude will be spot on from their opening game.

St. Benedict's and St. Augustine - two schools that once dominated secondary schools football - have fallen on difficult times and it was no surprise they ended on the same number of points in the bottom half of the standings. They both possess good individual talent but lack proper team cohesion and unless both schools can play as a team this year, they may struggle yet again.

Of the two Trinity Schools - the East team was far more talented than their Moka counterparts. They had some gifted players but missed too many chances and games they should have won, they either drew or lost. Moka plodded along for results and their main weapon is their home advantage; they must use it. Even when I played and coached a few years ago for Fatima, I loathed going up there. It is an extremely difficult ground for away teams and they must make it a fortress.

Carapichaima East Secondary was the surprise package last year and would have been disappointed with their 11th placing. They had some good results against the better teams but faltered against schools they ought to have beaten. They need to learn to win ugly by grinding out results.

The 3 promoted schools - East Mucurapo, Valencia Secondary and Bishop's High of Tobago should give a good account of themselves. Historically, East Mucurapo has produced exciting players so we will have to wait and see just how good they are. Valencia did well in the Interpol last year and can surprise us while I hope the Tobago school will come good in 2018.

I trust that the coaches will ensure the players do the simple basics well - passing, shooting, trapping etc. Sounds easy, right? Let's wait and see.

Good luck to all schools!

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Valencia tangles with San Juan.
By Nigel Simon (Guardian).

110 schools kicks off SSFL 2018

Newly promoted Valencia Secondary and perennial title-contenders San Juan North Secondary will kick off the 2018 season of the 15-team Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) in the opening match of a double-header at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya from 3.30pm today.

This will be followed by a clash between Trinity College East and St Benedict's College at the same venue from 5.30pm before the ten of the other 11 teams kick off their campaign on Saturday, August 15, including defending champions Presentation College of San Fernando.

Making the announcement on the start of the new season was SSFL President, William Wallace at the launch of the new season which was held at Fatima College Auditorium, Mucurapo Road, yesterday.

During his address, Wallace, a former national senior football team manager said that it was wise to reflect on the league past 50 years of survival through the dedication and steadfast commitment of its members as well as corporate T&T.

Looking ahead, Wallace noted that while he was delighted to see the continuous support of its major sponsors in Shell Limited First Citizens, Digicel, Sportsmax, and Coca-Cola, he was happy to note that within the next couple of days, he will be announcing partnerships with not one or two new sponsors, but three.

He added, 'These major companies coming on board will provide support to the Under-14 and Under-16 boys, Under-15 girls and the Senior Girls Divisions from 2018 and beyond.

'In addition, the Form One will also be sponsored from 2018 and beyond.

With regards to the Premier Division, Wallace noted that the SSFL was ready to set up its own Scholarship Programme for its players.

'We are going to be taking an active role in our students who are interested in scholarships and we have in place a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the SSFL and Global Premier Soccer (GPS) which will help us with this.

Neil Holloway, general manager in explaining the aim of GPS, which has formed partnerships with top European clubs FC Bayern Munich and Valencia CF stated that the mission of GPS is to be a leader in the development and growth of soccer across North America and beyond.

Holloway added, 'We will establish an identity of excellence as we pursue our pathway to success on and off the field, with our primary focus being the development of players and people. We will develop players who can compete at the highest level of soccer around the world."

Joe Bradley, owner of GPS which is now in its 17th year of existence made it clear that his company was in the spirit of collaborations in the way of a resource and support structure as they want to enhance the brand of the SSFL and its other sponsors.

And helping these players to be scouted and seen by the 25 countries across the Caribbean over the next three months of SSFL action will be Sportmax and in the USA and Canada, CEEN TV.

Tanya Lee, President of Marketing of Sportsmax noted that her company was very serious about the SSFL here in T&T and Schools Boys Football League in Jamaica as the high school's sports in the region are seen by Sportsmax as their greatest investment in Caribbean Youth.

Lee, also had some fantastic news for viewers as she noted there will be a marked increased in the number of matches being shown live on local television, CNC3, which has made a commitment to broadcast 21 matches all live.

With respect to the SSFL Girls Inter-Col, Lee also stated that for a second year running Sportsmax will also be broadcasting the final live as part of its package for the 2018 season.

Honourable Anthony Garcia, Minister of Education praised the SSFL for continuing to give the nation's youth the opportunity to develop themselves holistically.

Garcia pointed out that there were 110 secondary schools that are participating in all levels of the SSFL from a total of 135 schools, combining for between 13,000 and 14,000 boys and girls overall.

In paying credit to the coaches, teachers and parents, Garcia reminded all that if the league is deemed as being successful its means that the education system in T&T is also successful.

Other sponsors speaking at the launch of the new season included Tari Lovell, Sponsorship Manager at Digicel Group; Kurt Headley, Head of Retail Banking First Citizens; Kelli-Marie Patel, External Relations at Shell and Anthony Lovelace, Senior Marketing Co-Ordinator of Coca-Cola.

Opportunities for scholarships abroad as SSFL partners with US group GPS
By Joel Bailey (T&T Newsday)

THE SECONDARY Schools Football League (SSFL) has announced a partnership with United States-based group Global Premier Soccer (GPS), which will benefit both SSFL players and coaches.

This announcement was made by Neil Holloway, general manager of GPS, during yesterday’s launch of the 2018 SSFL season, at Fatima College, Mucurapo.

“We want a long-standing relationship with the SSFL and the partners of the SSFL,” said Holloway.

And Holloway pointed out that he is seeking a minimum of 40 players to enrol in US universities and colleges.

The Global Premier Soccer, which was founded in 2001, is one of the largest and most successful football clubs in North America.

Its mission is to be a leader in the development and growth of the sport across North America and beyond. According to its website, “We will establish an identity of excellence as we pursue our pathway to success on and off the field, with our primary focus being the development of players and people.”

SSFL president William Wallace added, “GPS will provide the SSFL with a consistent and sustainable player pathway through their established US collegiate placement and US private school programmes, which provide a variety of tools to aid players and families in navigating their way through the application and placement process.”

He noted, “GPS will provide coaches education seminars, clinics, courses and licensing.”

Wallace also addressed some of the issues that plagued the SSFL last season.

Former champions Shiva Boys were docked 17 points and subsequently relegated from the Premier Division, after Kierron Mason and Matthew Beal were improperly registered.

The rules previously stipulated that players had to seek clearance from the SSFL to play in other leagues after August 31. Mason represented Marabella Crisis Centre in the TT Super League and Beal played for Siparia Angels in the Southern Football Association (SFA) on September 2 2017.

According to Wallace, “We have made an important change in our constitution.”

He revealed that players can play at the club level until their first SSFL game, which will hence make them ineligible for other tournaments outside of the SSFL.

Wallace said that deals would be announced within the next few days regarding sponsorship for the boys under-14, boys under-16, senior girls, girls under-15 and the form one divisions.

“We are of the belief that the top is as strong as the bottom, and that we need to strengthen the base in order to sustain the top,” said Wallace.

The former national men’s football team manager, added, “As we continue this journey, a journey which as a league we cannot deviate from, simply because for many of our youngsters it provides hope and – in many instances – a career path.”

Minister of Education Anthony Garcia admitted feeling a sense of nostalgia as he was back at the school in which he served as a principal from 2000-2009.

He urged the competing schools “that the joy is in the participation rather than the prize.”

“I’ll congratulate the (players) and the coaches, as well as your teachers and principals, for (their) commitment,” said Garcia.

Also speaking at yesterday’s launch were Tanya Lee, vice-president of marketing at Sportsmax; Tari Lovell, group sponsorship manager at Digicel; Kurt Headley, head of retail banking of First Citizens; Kelli-Marie Patel, external relations advisor at Shell; and Anthony Lovelace, senior marketing co-ordinator at Coca Cola.
The Conquering Lion of Judah shall break every chain.

San Juan whips newcomers Valencia 3-zip.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Newcomers to the Premier Division of the Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) Valencia Secondary received a baptism of fire in its opening match yesterday at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya, going down 0-3 to an experienced and well-oiled machine in San Juan North Secondary in the first game of a doubleheader.

Isaiah Chase, Jerry Morris and the prolific Renaldo Boyce all beat Valencia custodian Ezekiel De Souza will brilliant strikes, but it was more the team's combined efforts that stood out, coupled with the inexperience of the Valencia players, all whom held the ball for unnecessarily long periods that often landed them in problems.

The game was just 15 minutes old when Chase broke the Valencia off-side trap and galloped on to a through ball before lobbing an onrushing De Souza for the opener. San Juan, the dethroned Coca Cola InterCol champions in 2017, showed their experience by keeping the ball for long periods and launching strategic attacks which led to its second goal.

Striker Morris, who taunted the Valencia defence in the early moments, was later gifted his goal when defender Jerome Arrindell fumbled the ball in the back and allowed Morris to race clear of the defence on the right side before firing powerfully past De Souza to the far post in the 27th minute.

Despite the inexperience of its players, however, Valencia had only itself to blame as players seem more concerned with self-glory, failing to release the ball in-spite of nearby support. Otherwise, they may well have a team to trouble their opponents this season.

Striker Dwight Yorke, one of just a few players in the Valencia roster with star-studded names, showed why the easterners can be a potential threat when he was picked out unmarked outside the San Juan area. The talented striker eluded two defenders on his way to goal but found himself on his unfavoured right foot and fired a tame shot that did not trouble the San Juan goalie.

San Juan went to the break with a comfortable 2-0 advantage but when the match resumed, they received a scare when Yorke's long-range shot cannoned off the crossbar before bouncing to safety.

San Juan could have put the game beyond their opponents reach, as they created a number of chances that went a begging.

They eventually sealed the win in the 72nd minute. Boyce, the school's leading striker last year, powered his way past two markers in the centre of the pitch, before his blistering low drive flew past De Souza for maximum points in the game.

The featured match between St Benedict's College and Trinity College east ended in a goal-less draw.

The real measure of a man's character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

Six minutes following the resumption his teammate Omri Baird extended the lead to 2-0 and to ensure the opposition was out of it Shakeem Julien netted in the 87th minute. However, the visitors had the last say when Kei Phillip got his name on the score sheet with an in jury time goal in the 92nd minute.

Naps took the early lead through Seon Shipply and controlled the play for the most part thereafter. However, against the run of play, the host struck back, equalising just before the half to share the half-time honours. Pres Lions win SSFL opener.
By Andrew Gioannetti (Newsday).

PRESENTATION College San Fernando began their defence of the Secondary Schools Football League Premier Division yesterday with a 3-1 win over Trinity College Moka at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

The “Lions” made light work of their opponents with national junior beach soccer players Jordan Riley and Omri Baird scoring one goal each and Shakeem Julien sealing the result in the 87th minute.

Trinity East scored a consolation goal with Kai Phillip on target in the second minute of injury time.

The schools from South were well represented yesterday as a well-organised Naparima College sealed a 3-1 away win over St Mary’s College in St Clair.

Naps, led by former national midfielder Angus Eve, walked all over St Mary’s and could have won the match by five goals had luck not been with the “Saints”.

Defending champion Presentation College of San Fernando moved into sole possession of top spot in the Premier Division of the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL) with a 3-1 whipping of Carapichaima East Secondary at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre, yesterday.

Starting the day levelled on three points with St Augustine Secondary, Naparima College and idle San Juan North Secondary, Presentation got a goal each from Jordan Riley, Shakeem Julien and Omri Baird, just as they did in the opening round win over Trinity College of Moka, to lead 3-0 at the half-time whistle against Carapichaima East. It was Carapichaima’s first match of the season.

The second-half saw a much improved defensive effort from the Central Zone school, who managed to pull a goal back, however, the damage was already done in the first 45 minutes by Presentation to improve to maximum six points after two matches, two ahead of former two-time champion Naparima College, St Augustine Secondary and Queen’s Royal College (QRC).

Naparima was held to a goalless draw by East Mucurapo Secondary at its Lewis Street, San Fernando home ground while the “Green Machine” of St Augustine needed a goal four minutes into time added on from Kesean St Rose to earn a 2-2 at home with East Zone rival, Trinity College East.

Dorian Sampson scored in the 29th minute for “Gustine” to lead 1-0 at the half-time interval as they looked to build on the 4-2 opening win against St Anthony’s College.

However, on the resumption, Kerdell Sweeen (55th) and Terrell Wiley (73rd) got items for the visitors to silence the home crowd, until St Rose struck at the death for a share of the spoils.

Over in Tobago at Plymouth Recreation Ground, St Anthony’s College got two late goals in a 3-1 defeat of Bishop’s High School.

The trio of Zion Williams, Omari Williams and Khiesa Granger were all on target for the “Westmooring Tigers” to cancel out Dominique Lyons’ reply for the hosts.

At QRC ground in St Clair, national Under-20 standout John-Paul Rochford got both goals to lead the Royalians past promoted Valencia Secondary while up at Moka, Maraval, Kai Phillip’s 35th-minute strike secured all three points for Trinity College Moka over Fatima.

In the day’s other fixture, St Benedict’s College and St Mary’s battled to a 1-1 draw at the Mannie Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella.

Champs 'Pres' edges Saints 1-0.
By Walter Alibey (Guardian).

Reigning champion Presentation College got a single goal from Aleem Barkley to maintain its winning streak in 1-0 win against St Mary's College (CIC) in round three action in the Premier Division of the Shell/First Citizens Secondary Schools Football League (SSFL), yesterday.

Entering the match with an unblemished record away at CIC ground on Serpentine Road, St Clair, the southerners left it until late before Barkley found the nets in the 78th minute, which puts them on top the standing on nine points from three wins in as many matches.

Its closest rival, Naparima College, was much more convincing at Guaracara Park, Point-A-Pierre, thrashing St Benedict's College 3-1 to move to seven points.

After a 1-1 tie in its last match, coach Angus Eve's boys made sure of maximum points this time around. They opened the scoring in the 37th minute from Mark Ramdeen for a 1-0 half-time advantage but failed to stop Jabari Jones from finding the equaliser in the 71st minute.

Later, however, "Naps" as they are popularly called, restored their advantage when Seon Shippley beat the Benedict's goalkeeper in the 83rd minute. And on the stroke of regulation time, Isa Bramble drilled the nail into Benedict's coffin with his item.

At San Juan North School grounds, the home team came out from a bye in the last round of matches to whip Bishop's High School of Tobago 4-2 and maintain its clean sheet so far.

Isaiah Chase and Renaldo Boyce, who were among the goalscorers in a 3-0 win against Valencia Secondary at the Marvin Lee Stadium a week ago, again found the net yesterday, to add to other items by Elair Brewster and Christian Mitchell in the winning effort.

At St Augustine, the home team got a single goal from Kesean St Rose in the 30th minute to turn back a battling Queen's Royal College (QRC) 1-0 and take them to seven points from two wins and a tie.
