Telesford Named To Big South Men’s Soccer All-Conference First Team; Four Flames Named to Second Team
Liberty Flame Osei Telesford was named to the Big South All-Conference first team, the league announced Wednesday evening. The announcements were made at the conference’s annual men’s soccer awards banquet, held at the Radisson in High Point, N.C.
The Flames had one member on the first team and four on the second. Senior midfielder Telesford (San Juan, Trinidad) was selected to the first team, while junior forward Adrian Bumbut (Zalau, Romania), senior defender Jonathan Burklo (Tampa, Fla.), sophomore midfielder Kyle Cupid (Edinburgh, Trinidad), and Michael Ward (Seffner, Fla.) were named to the second-team all-conference squad. Senior goalkeeper Kevin Mahan (Waterford, Mich.) was also Liberty’s representative on the Big South’s All-Academic Team.
Telesford was named to the Big South All-Conference first team for the second time in his career. He was selected to the conference's first team in 2003 as a defender and in 2004, he was named to the Big South's second team. This season, Telesford moved to the midfield where he is second on the Flames in scoring with 17 points and tied for second with six goals.
Birmingham-Southern midfielder Thimo Langner and Panthers’ head coach Preston Goldfarb were voted the 2005 Big South Men’s Soccer Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. In addition, Winthrop goalkeeper Patrick Mitrovich was selected as Freshman of the Year, while Radford’s Patrick Colas was tabbed the Big South’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the sports information directors.
Langner led the Panthers to their second-straight Big South regular-season championship with 11 goals and 29 points. He currently ranks No. 10 in the country averaging 1.93 points per game and is 16th in Division I with 0.39 goals per game. He also ranks third in the League in goals, assists (7) and points. Langner finished with five first place votes and 15 points, edging out Winthrop’s Saidi Isaac by one point (six first place votes).
Goldfarb earns his first Big South Coach of the Year honor, leading his Panthers to their second-straight No. 1 seed in the Big South Men’s Soccer Tournament. The Panthers officially began playing soccer in the Big South in 2003 and have won two out of three Big South regular-season championships in its young membership.
The awards banquet serves as the kickoff for the 2005 Men’s Soccer Championship. The first round begins Thursday in High Point, N.C., with four games scheduled throughout the day on the campus of High Point University. Liberty, the championship’s fourth seed, opens the afternoon by squaring off with Winthrop, the fifth seed. The semifinals will be played Friday beginning at 4 p.m., while the title match is slated for Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
