(Mexico vs El Salvador) preliminaries this weekend.
In the 2000 CONCACAF tournament, winning team Costa Rica and Cuba qualified for
the FIFA Futsal World Championships, held in Guatemala.
National coach Clayton Morris said: “After we defeated Cuba in the opening
match, they wanted to get a rematch, so instead of playing two club teams in the
other matches, we played a three-match series with the Cubans.”
Looking ahead to the CONCACAF tournament, Morris said: “We will be looking to
have another couple of international matches against some Central American
countries.
Two teams from CONCACAF will qualify for the grand 2004 FIFA Futsal World
Championships in Chinese Taipei from November 21 to December 5.
Tomorrow, the T&T Futsal squad will resume training at the University of the
West Indies Sports and Physical Educational Centre in St Augustine, from 9 am.

T&T and Guyana book final spots in
CFU Futsal qualifiers.
By: Shaun Fuentes.
22-Apr-2004 - Host country Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana booked
their places in Friday's final of the Caribbean Football Union Futsal qualifiers
with respective victories over Netherlands Antilles and Suriname at the
University of the West Indies, St Augustine on Wednesday night.
T&T easily got past Grenada 9-2 while Guyana hard to work hard to earn a 7-5
win over Suriname, edging out the latter on goal difference.
T&T coach Clayton Morris was obviously pleased with the team's success so
far, saying that the main objective now was to win the tournament.
"I think things have gone just as planned so far. From day one e told the
players that they can go as far as they wanted to in this version of the game
once they set their minds to the task. This is their game and we are happy that
the authorities saw it fit to expose them. Reaching the finals in Costa Rica is
a big achievement for them," Morris told TTFF Media.
Going into the final against Guyana from 8pm at UWI, Morris added "They
(Guyana) will be on a high because they are undefeated but they will also be
cautious against our guys because I think we have the more skilful players in
this tournament."
In the feature match of the evening, Grenada were hoping to cause an upset
against hosts T&T but soon found the going tough against a team that had
improved with each match.
Three minutes past before Anthony Small put T&T ahead from a left side cross
by Ako James.
Two minutes later, things got better for the home team as James got into a one
on one with goalkeeper Roosevelt Romain and calmly slotted home for a 2-0 lead.
Grenada hit back though in the same 5th minute when Brian Stanisclaus found the
target to make it 2-1.
Jerwyn Balthazar wasted no time in regaining T&T's two-goal advantage when
he netted in the 9th minute leaving Grenada to wait a further nine minutes
before Akenson Neckles made it 3-2, T&T went 4-2 ahead in the 27th minute
through Balthazar who struck with a bullet past Romain.
The lead was extended when Balthazar got his third goal in the 31st minute.
Kevin Peters shot between the keeper's legs to make it 6-2 in the 33rd. Marvin
Lee pushed T&T ahead 7-1 in the 34th minute and by then it was all T&T.
They got further goals from Lee in the 35th and Peters in the 39th minute.
T&T substitute goalkeeper Perry Martin saved a penalty by Neckles in the
final minute.
In the earlier match, the Netherlands went ahead in the 4th minute through
Clifford Pauletta and proceeded to get further goals from Curly Poppen (6th,
10th and 35th ), Claymore Dewindt (29th) and Riangelo Rodriguez in the 37th
minute. The Puerto Ricans, far from a bad playing side, got their goals from
Chago Snatiago (31st), Manuel Freije (38th) and Javier Ortiz in the penultimate
minute.
Guyana, in their match against Suriname, had to wait until the 9th minute before
taking the lead through Alton Fraser before Eron Hayde doubled their advantage
four minutes later following a tightly contested opening few minutes.
Suriname pulled a goal back through C.Sama-an in the 23rd minute but were soon
trailing by two goals again when Fraser notched his second item in the 25th
minute. Things got worse for Suriname when S. Berenstein put the ball into his
own net a minute later to leave Guyana ahead 4-1. Further goals by Travis Grant
in the 28th minute, Fraser in the 32nd and Norman Nassey four minutes from the
end completed the win for Guyana and in the process send them into Friday's
final.
A. Doesburg (30th, 37th) G Brandon (31st) and Sama-an (40th) were the other
scorers for Puerto Rico.
The other match on the day saw the hammering team of the competition, Turks and
Caicos giving a much improved performance in their closing match against St
Vincent and the Grenadines. Though losing again, 2-0 this time, the Turks were
able to hold a 0-0 scoreline at half time, the first scoreless half for the
series. Narel George scored in the 25th minute and Chester Morgan got St
Vincent's second item a minute from the end.
The three Caribbean representatives will join three qualifiers from the North/Central Preliminary Series, along with Cuba and the host Costa Rica, in the eight-team CONCACAF Final Round. This event will qualify two CONCACAF nations to the 2004 FIFA Futsal World Championship to be held in Chinese Taipei from 21 November - 5 December.

James nets double for Soca Warriors.
By Nigel Simon.
21-Apr-2004 - Ako James scored a goal on either side of the half as host T&T
opened its Hindu Credit Union Caribbean Football Union Futsal qualifying
tournament with a 4-2 win over Puerto Rico on Monday night.
Before a vociferous crowd that braved the rainy weather at the University of the
West Indies, Sports and Physical Educational Centre, St Augustine, local players
Jerwyn Balthazar and Kevin Peters had early shots on goal for T&T. But it
was James who brought the fans alive at the fully air-conditioned facility when
he put the ball into the net to put T&T 1-0 ahead in the ninth minute.
Two minutes later Kevin Peters got goal number two, with a bullet of a right
footed shot.
Marvin Lee extended the lead to 3-0 two minutes before the end of the 20-minute
first half, as he turned in a right sided by James.
Sterling O’Brien twice had a chance to add to his team’s score from the
penalty spot but on each occasion he dragged his shots right of the post. The
spot kicks were awarded for fouls on the local players after the Puerto Rican
had reached the allotted number of fouls per half, six.
Within four minutes of the restart James got is second item in the 24th minute
to guarantee the host a comfortable 4-0 lead for T&T. However, Puerto Rican
pulled two goals back through Hector Calderon from the penalty spot in the 29th
minute and Jose Garcia in the final minute.

HCU sponsor Money Express Futsal tournament.
By Vinode Mamchan - T&T Newsday.
14-Mar-2004 - The Hindu Credit Union (HCU) Financial Group of Companies will sponsor the Futsal football qualifying tournament with an initial injection of $200,000. FIFA vice-president Austin Jack Warner gave details of the sponsorship and said HCU are also willing to support the World Cup qualifying tournament with contract benefits amounting to $2M. “I must congratulate the Hindu Credit Union today for their historic gesture of sponsoring the first Futsal qualifying tournament. I am very happy indeed for us to forge this relationship with the HCU, as they just as the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) have the best interests of football at heart,” Warner said. The Futsal tournament is a shortened version of the game and includes five players on each team and the use of side walls to assist in the play. The qualifying tournament takes place in Trinidad and Tobago from April 18 and the two top teams will go on to Taiwan next year for the final.
The countries taking part in the qualifying stages are hosts Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Puerto Rico, Netherlands Antilles, Suriname, Guyana, Turks and Caicos Islands and St Vincent and the Grenadines. The tournament will be called the HCU Money Express Futsal Qualifying Tournament. Warner heaped praises on the HCU. “March forward with your dreams and you would achieve all that you set out to. The criticisms will come hard and fast but you just have to stay focus and you would get to your desired goals. We both have one thing in common, we are criticised a lot but we must look at those people and forget them. They will only pelt at the trees with fruits so don’t take them on,” Warner said. Ashvani Mahabir commented that the HCU which was founded in 1985 has been through a lot with people making unfounded allegations against them. FIFA Development Officer, Keith Look Loy, was also on hand and said that Futsal is becoming a very popular sport in the world and will take off very quickly in the Caribbean.
This form of football is a bit different but it has generated a lot of interest. We have had four World Cups already and it has been dominated by Brazil. They have won it three times, while in the last finals in 2000 they lost out to Spain. This is a West Indian-type style of the game with a lot of flair and hence we can expect it to catch on very fast in the region,” said Look Loy.
Captain Horace Burrell, Marketing Manager of the CFU advised the HCU that football was a very powerful marketing tool and that they can be assured that their product, the HCU Money Express, will be carried to a lot of potential customers. “Football is the most popular sport in the region and as such we have a great marketing tool. Your invest will go a long way for both parties and we thank you for assisting this venture,” Captain Burrell, a Jamaican, said. HCU Corporate Director of Advertising, Carl Ramdeo said that his company will be looking for a long term association with CFU and expects a successful series. “We are in it for the development of the sport in Trinidad and Tobago and the region by extension. Both parties have goals to achieve, you want to have a lot of goals scored, while we want to be able to provide you with the avenue to get that result,” he said. “At the HCU, we are committed to the development of people and we are very happy to be associated with this tournament,” Mahadeo said.

What is Futsal ?
There are 4 field players and a goalkeeper with no offside.
Futsal is played on a basketball court, however it can also be played on a variety of surfaces. The sport is a great skill developer, demanding quick reflexes, fast thinking, and pin-point passing. It is an exciting game suitable for children as well as adults. Futsal is also very economical and safe. Todays Futsal stars such as Ronaldo, Denilson, Roberto Carlos and even stars of yesterday like the great Pele, and Zico grew up playing Futsal as kids and credit the game with developing their individual flair and skills.
The first game of indoor football on record was played in Canada in 1854. However, the modern version of the game was developed in Uruguay in 1930, where Juan Carlos Ceriani defined a standard set of rules; it wasn't long before it spread into other parts of South America and Europe.
Futbol Sala, indoor football and five-a-side soccer was developed to be played on a basketball sized court. The special feature of the game is the unique properties of the ball, which has a low rebound. The game develops close individual ball skills as the court is small and players are forced into limited space & option scenarios. The success of the Confederation of Brazilian Football can be attributed to the prominent use of Futsal in the development of it's junior players. During games, players receive more touches and are constantly placed in demanding decision making, limited space situations that they would face on a greatly reduced scale playing 11-a side outdoor soccer only. As such almost all of the Brazilian soccer superstars like Ronaldo, Denilson, and Roberto Carlos developed their phenomenal skills playing Futsal as juniors.
In 1989 FIFA officially identified the name Futsal to represent all indoor soccer and five-a-side activities and it is now played in all the continents of the world by over 100 countries and has more then 12 million players..
Futsal is the only "official form of Indoor Soccer" as approved by (FIFA) Federation Internationale de Football Association. You will see that Futsal is a fast-paced game that is fun to play and will help players to improve their skills.
In Soccer Futsal’s goal is to help the players develop, while they are having fun competing.
