Warriors beat St Kitts
Trinidad and Tobago’s senior footballers hit back from Thursday’s loss to Haiti with a 2-1 victory over host St Kitts/Nevis at Warner Park on Saturday night.
Goals by Joe Public striker Andre Toussaint in the fifth minute and SWIF striker Peter Prosper in the 35th pushed the “Soca Warriors” to second place behind Haiti who took honours on a better goal difference than the hosts.
The Kittitians pulled a goal back in the 55th minute but a commanding first half performance ensured that T&T came away with the three points.
Fevrier was obviously pleased about the win even though he would have preferred to return home unbeaten.
“The players showed good character to come away with the win following our opening loss to the Haitians and especially after arriving here so shortly before the tournament. While I’m not making any excuses, this team got ready for the trip in a short space of time and I think the guys deserve some credit for their performance. Again, something like this is all an experience that will help us grow,” Fevrier told TTFF Media.
In the loss to Haiti, goals by Pedro Paguero and Mones Chery did the job for the opponents
Haiti held most of the ball possession in the first half and went close to scoring midway through the half when Peguero took a powerful free kick from about 30 metres out.
A diving Michael McComie, in the T&T goal, pushed the ball just outside the right upright, conceding a corner.
Trinidad and Tobago had an opportunity to take the lead in the 38th minute when defender Pierre Richards headed from off the goal-line after Haiti’s goalkeeper Gobart Fenelon’s failed attempt to deflect a Nigel Pierre shot away from goal.
T&T made a number of quick substitutions looking for goals but a combination of tight defence and excellent use of the goal line by Fenelon limited their scoring opportunities.
The T&T contingent was scheduled to return home last night and Fevrier will now focus on getting the Under 23 team ready for an upcoming friendly against Costa Rica. The senior team will also continue preparations for their match against Morocco in September.
