Ken Galt was a footballer whose brilliance brought him tremendous success at club, national and international level for eleven seasons, during which time he set goal scoring records of all kinds, some of which have never been equalled. From his school days at Tranquillity and Queen's Royal College, Galt was a fast, fearless centre forward. He left school in 1935 and joined Shamrock. And in his first full season with the "Cafe Boys" as they were known, he scored a record 33 goals.
Two years later he became the youngest ever captain of a national football team, leading Trinidad on a Tour to British Guiana. In the final game of that series he broke his nose. Galt continued to demonstrate his excellent skills in the first division of the Trinidad Amateur Football Association until he joined Apex in the South during the 1940's. There again he became the leading goal scorer. Fans in the North will always remember Galt leading the South team for the annual Red Cross North-South match and very often creating problems for the North defence. But he was not only talented at soccer. In fact he was a fine cricketer and hockey player, representing South at both sports. He also played tennis.
The ‘Footergraph’ of 1944 said of Galt: “His success has certainly been due, not so much to innate talent but rather to tenacity, industry, an unparalleled love for the game and sheer stubbornness.” The document further noted: “While at school, this youngster was banned from games by medical advise but after first secretly and then openly, he persisted and though he only obtained moderate success at school, his post school career was extraordinary brilliant.
In 1947 Galt said farewell to first class football. He also made his last tour that year when Trinidad visited Jamaica for the series. After he hung up his boots, he moved on to take up administrative posts in local football. He was President of the Trinidad Football Association for 23 years. For his excellent services to football in Trinidad and Tobago, Galt received the Humming Bird (Silver) Medal and the Chaconia (Gold).
