HEAD Coach of WASA FC Anthony Dhanoolal said winning the bmobile National Super League was their goal for this season.

He was speaking to the media just after his side clinched the title, dethroning Joe Public with a 2-2 draw against Santa Rosa at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Sunday.

“I think we had a tremendous season. We started off saying we wanted to win the league. That was our main focus in winning the league. We lost in the knock-out, the Toyota Cup and the FA cup but our main concern was the league.

We rested some players because we knew we had a good chance of winning the league. We gave them a little rest here and there and it paid off for us and it feels great to claim the title,” said Dhanoolal.

The Water Boys who should have claimed the title in the penultimate round were shocked by Defence Force, which gave Joe Public and West Side a glimmer of hope at the title heading into the final match of their season.

He said they went out with the intention of winning the match and putting the race out of the reach of the other two teams. “A draw was out of the question. We could have gone out and win this game. We fell behind but the guys never gave up. Fortunately Joe Public came and drew and that is what gave us the title since we were two points ahead of them,” said the coach.

Discipline could have cost the utility team the title as a number of their key players were benched for the all important match. “Discipline was one of the main concerns in the camp.

“I had some guys going and playing in the Eddie Harte League, Friday and Saturday night. We had spoken earlier in the week and we said we were going to live of the game with just one match more to go. Some of the guys disrespected that and went and play,” said Dhanoolal.

The coach took a firm stand to bench these players even if were had lost then match and the title race. “Win, loose or draw I was not going with these guys. I had to make them an example and that is how it was and we prevailed in the end.”
