Minister of Sport Dr Rupert Griffith was well received at the prize giving ceremony of the Caribbean Welders Fishing Pond League on Saturday, after promising significant upgrades to the Fishing Pond Recreation Ground where the league is held.

Griffith, who for the second year sponsored trophies and medals for the annual competition, said he will be speaking to officials of the Sport Company of Trinidad and Tobago who will visit the site in the near future to see how best they can develop the recreation ground.

Among the goodies announced were an upgrade to the playing surface, a pavilion, showers, changing room and a meeting room.

Griffith reminded the audience that in 2013 he had promised to build a box drain around the field which he delivered.

He also praised title sponsor Caribbean Welders for their continued involvement in the league and bringing national spotlight on the league of Fishing Pond with a $40,000 first prize.

Peter Park, CEO, Caribbean Welders, later shocked spectators and players by upping the prize money to an astonishing $50,000 for 2015.

This year the league attracted a record number of entrants with 17 teams vying for $57,000 in prize money.

The winner walked away with $40,000 while the losing finalist received $8,000.

The third and fourth-placed teams were awarded $5,000 and $4,000 respectively.

Blu Magic defeated Gremio FC 3-2 in the final with Coca All-Stars getting past G Madrid 1-0 in the third/fourth match-up.

Sponsors of the league included Caribbean Welders, Ma Pau, Ministry of Sport, Benji Bakery and Edward Marks.
